I like musicians who make music for the music itself and with no audience in mind.
All music should be left to interpretation to each individual who listens to it. But of course, you are talking about lyrics. Lyrics should only enhance the music not be the primary focus.

I don't think theres such thing as secular music and Christian music. Its Christian lyrics or otherwise.
My thought is, if it encourages people to focus on Jesus whats the problem? If a song with christian lyrics convicts a person of their sin, thats awesome isn't it? Other than antichrist doom and gloom have you noticed how often music and singing is talked of in the book of Revelation? Thats music and lyrics to the glory of God - music with christian lyrics at its best. The biggest book in the bible is a greatest hits compilation by King David (a man after Gods own heart). Are you're saying it was wrong of David and those around him to record it?
Sure not everyone who claims to be Christian will make great music and lyrics, and admittedly I'd rather listen to Pearl Jam than hear more repetitive Hillsong music, butI still like a lot of Christian stuff out there. If someone gets a genuine calling from God to make music and lyrics to his glory who on earth can think they have the right to judge that?
Also, the music industry isn't corrupt, its the people in it. With things like movies and music why can't there be a Christian alternative? I thank God for christian radio from saving me from cutting off my ears from the binge music of the likes of Lady Gaga and Rihanna in order to keep an ear out for any new ok secular music. I just don't have the endurance. One of the greatest examples of Christiananity redeeming screwed up industries is the wonderful stuff Sherwood Baptist Church is doing. Its sooo refreshing going to a movie thats decent and pointed at God. Whats wrong with music being like that?
The retail industry has been corrupting Christmas for decades now, does that stop us from celebrating Jesus? Just because most car salesmen are dodgy does that stop people from buying cars?

I think everyone has their own opinions about it, how they view Christian music.
As for me personally, I barely listen to secular music. Reason being, most secular songs have lyrics that are either: straight up depressing, about sex/unrequited love/breakups, or something ridiculously random. And I believe that lyrics are important when you're listening to a song. Most Christian music has very encouraging, edifying lyrics.
I agree that there is some Christian music that sounds ''secular'', and I think we all need to use wisdom & discernment when you're choosing who to listen to. Some of you might say to me ''It's just music", but it's not like that to me. Music is like words being spoken over your life, being spoken into your head over and over- with the accompanying melody. If you listen to the wrong words- it can mess with you, it can change your outlook, it can do a lot of things.
So yes, I do agree in some way with this thread- I don't really like some Christian music. I stay away from any that seem questionable. And then some of it I absolutely love. The songs that truly encourage & lift our spirit- they helped me with so much and there was even a song that led to my salvation.

Personally I don't agree that christian music is all bad. If you have to choose between a music talking about drug,sex, sin, suicide, sadness, betrayal (etc) or between music talking about God what would you choose? As a born again christian I would surely choose the second music. At this point, since I like music, I prefer to listen christian one which edifies me.. You can't say all christian music is the same way, it's not intelligent. You can say that there are artists who make it similiar to the world and not with a straight message but.. it's also true that there are artists who truly want to worship God and put clear lyrics of praise in their songs. So everything depends from the artist. If they make just christian music or have a worship life also when they are not singing.So I don't agree with you just for one reason: Everything is relative and you can't say that christian music is all bad. But surely you showed a reality which exist, it stand to us to choose real christian one. This is my opinion, have a good day =)

For me it is clear. If I can't hear the words clearly or they don't glorify God I don't listen to it.
My Music should be 1. Lifting God up 2. Teaching me or confirming my beliefs 3. Lifting me up (In his love).

Heres the deal, I think 2 things need to happen to Christian music
1. Christian music needs to start being sub-genred to be better organized. For instance I can't tell you how frustrating it is to see Demon Hunter and Flyleaf together on "Christian rock" lists haha.
2. Christian artists need to do their own thing. Right now I can name off tons of Christian bands almost identical to Breaking Benjamin (who is a terrible band in my opinion).
We need to see Christian versions of bands/artists like MGMT, Elliott Smith, etc... People who do their own thing and whose music can't fully be defined in the music industry. I'm sorry to say it but I find that the most creative and talented musicians often belong to bands with an Atheist flare. It boggles my mind since most of these bands are American and Christianity is the most popular belief among the U.S. population. Why don't we see more talent in Christian music?

Another thing id God wants us to be good stewards of his money. When you buy music you are supporting a person's Ministry.. so is his/her Ministry pleasing to God? Does his/her Ministry and personal beliefs conflict with the Bible?
Just as I wouldn't donate money to a Church that Preaches that the Bible is outdated and full of errors, I don't want to donate to a bands Ministry that teaches the same.
I remember years ago reading in a Christian Music magazine the author stating of a Christian band: "They even generated their own Mosh Pit"! The author exclaimed this in excitement as though that is a Godly thing. People hitting, banging up against, or touching each other in the way they do in a Mosh Pit is NOT of God!
"Body surfing" as they do in these mosh pits is NOT of God! Passing young girls across the crowd while all the men young and old are touching her body is NOT being Modest. 1 Corinthians 7:1 "Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman."
Would you want your young daughter passed around for strange men's hands to touch? I hope not! I don't want other women touching her either!
If a Big Mac was labeled as a Christian Big Mac would that make it less harmful to your body? I love Contemporary Christian Music but I know that you can't take worldly activities and simply label them Christian and not expect them to clog the arteries between you and God.

Tim Tebow makes his living smashing into other people with the collision force equal to a violent car accident, so is he considered a Christian in your eyes? One of the better MMA fighters is an ordained minister, does his message lose luster with you? Have you ever driven faster than the speed limit, fudged your taxes, laughed at a racist joke, or drank to the point of drunkenness? If so, based on the way you are interpreting things, your message should not be listened to and adhered to.

Agreed, having done security for shows, and being a promoter myself, i think going to a soccer game is much more personal then a mosh pit. So much pushing and shoving. Yet with this mindset, if i brush against some girl thats not of God?
I think if you go to a show just so you can wait for that one girl to crowd surf, force yourself underneath her path, and then try to get handsy with her you have a problem. Dancing, moshing, and surfing though are far from what i feel is inappropriate, and to look like it that way seems to bind you into a fance of legalism that didn't exist.
Eating food isn't a sin, but eating to much food, or using food as a crutch is. Just depends on the heart attitude.
