1 Corinthians 6:19-20

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

3 John 1:2

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

We are commanded to not only guard minds from outward sinful influences, but also to preserve our bodies as is our duty as the people of God. Our Father has given us the wisdom and benefits of all things that He has created for man. At least, that is what He intended. Check out this quote from an author by the name of "Ellen G. White.":

Man came from the hand of his Creator perfect in organization and beautiful in form. The fact that he has for six thousand years withstood the ever increasing weight of disease and crime is conclusive proof of the power of endurance with which he was first endowed. And although the antediluvians (people that lived in the time prior to the Flood) generally gave themselves up to sin without restraint, it was more than two thousand years before the violation of natural law was sensibly felt. Had Adam originally possessed no greater physical power than men now have, the race would *ere this have become extinct.

(*ere - before )

Through the successive generations since the Fall, the tendency has been continually downward. Disease has been transmitted from parents to children, generation after generation. Even infants in the cradle suffer from afflictions caused by the sins of their parents....

The patriarchs from Adam to Noah, with few exceptions, lived nearly a thousand years. Since then the average length of life has been decreasing.

At the time of Christ's first advent
(i.e. the period wherein Christ was sent by the Father to be born of a woman), the race had already so degenerated that not only the old, but the middle-aged and the young, were brought from every city to the Saviour, to be healed of their diseases. Many labored under a weight of misery inexpressible.

The violation of physical law, with its consequent suffering and *premature death, has so long prevailed that these results are regarded as the appointed lot of humanity; but God did not create the race in such a feeble condition. This state of things is not the work of Providence, but of man. It has been brought about by wrong habits--by violating the laws that God has made to govern man's existence. A continual transgression of nature's laws is a continual transgression of the law of God. Had men always been obedient to the law of the Ten Commandments, carrying out in their lives the principles of those precepts, the curse of disease now flooding the world would not exist....

When men take any course which needlessly expends their vitality or beclouds their intellect, they sin against God; they do not glorify Him in their body and spirit, which are His. Yet despite the insult which man has offered Him, God's love is still extended to the race, and He permits light to shine, enabling man to see that in order to live a perfect life he must obey the natural laws which govern his being. How important, then, that man should walk in this light, exercising all his powers, both of body and mind, to the glory of God!

(*premature death - in essence, the act of being killed or dying BEFORE our time, that is by old age)

This is interesting, I would imagine that health is important, because is a prerequisite to bear good fruit in some areas.

I have not sit to think about what areas in which we can bear good fruit are related to health, I guess it also depends on the gender and roles one fulfills:
If you are a provider for your household, health is important.
If you are a minister, health is very important.
If you work in the health industry, definitively health is important.
If you try to evangelize, health is important, although a visit to the hospital may prove good for that also, when you can talk to patients there.
If you are a female, and thinking of starting a family, the new life will definitively need for you to be healthy in order to develop ok.
If you are a nurturer in the family, good vibes, encouragement, optimism and love may be affected a bit with poor health.

Nice topic, need to think more about it.

On the surface that may make sense but is it entirely biblical? If one of our biggest purposes in life is to be a witness does that require our good health?
When jesus was on the earth did he not bring glory to God through those in poor health? Some could say the very reason for their lack of health was to be a witness.
Was it not Gods determination who could and couldn't be a witness? Did God not use an insecure man with a stutter to defy the most powerful ruler of his day by standing up and speaking and making bold acts? Doesn't the fact that it was a man that seemed entirely unfit for the role, yet obeyed and succeeded, add to the grandeur, not lessen it?
Isn't one of the primary tenants of God using that which the world deems less than?
I'm not saying we should strive to be sick, but neither should the sick be viewed as less capable. A person can sit in their house, sick, and still impact hundreds or thousands, especially in this day and age. And a healthy person can still fail at the task before them.

sub humanoid:
In Bible times things were different. Sick people could not do much other than wait for a miracle or try some empirical health providers to try to aid them.
Jesus did the miracles, He was and is the true miracle worker. After restoring the health of many He told them to go tell others of how good God had been to them.

Notice that I assume we are talking about normal people, with normal life, not expected to be sick, but I did mention that going to the Hospital for some temporary issues can be used as an opportunity to help others understand there is faith in the Miracle worker Jesus that can heal at will and mostly when there is faith.

Now people that are born or develop a chronic condition, can also glorify God in certain ways, but not in the same ways of a healthy person that has more mobility, etc.

The point you bring up is interesting because of certain spin off issues: should persons without what is considered normal health marry and start a family? I believe if God has a plan then is ok, but christian responsibility is also something to take into account.

If a societal structure makes it difficult for a non-optimal health person to obtain a dignified position to maintain a family, should we accept the situation or should we as good health christians try to better the odds for those in such situations?

That same christian responsibility would require persons to take care of their wellbeing and health, as part of their christian stewardship obligations. We do not want to become a liability to our family because of conditions that are preventable.

So from a Biblical perspective, that includes christian responsibility and stewardship, health maintenance is important, because we are expected to keep the temple of the Holy Spirit at a optimal condition for whatever our task is in Kingdom of God work.

Some areas require that good health is present for fruit to be bore, some others do not. Either way as you mentioned neither case should engage in health damaging activities, and as much as possible should adopt health enhancing ones.

Just out of curiosity were you or your family brought to Christ by a sick person? Probabilities are that the first converted person in your family did not.

Does it mean that less than optimal health persons cannot do God's work? of course not, maybe that issue was brought up here to explore ways in which ministries can be develop to allow that to happen.

Kind regards.
