While watching shows on TV, I've noticed that the commercials are becoming more and more inappropriate. Although the show that I'm watching is acceptable, I've been seeing sexuality, nudity, and greater violence in the commercials. It seems the content on these channels is becoming more lax than I've ever seen before. Do you think it's going to get to the point where we will not be able to watch TV altogether?
No. But they should be careful how they view it. The mere existence of sin in a movie or commercial shouldn't stop one from watching it because there's sin in real life. However, if one were to watch something and condoning the sin or enjoying it, that would be different. For example, it's one thing to watch Grease as a musical that dramatizes what high school kids (who all have a weird aging disorder that makes them look 30) live through. It's another to watch it and think it's great that Sandy started smoking out of 'love' for Danny and that Rizzo and Kinicki should be sleeping together and the fact that the pregnancy was just a scare means they should just go right back at it.
Of course, some movies are so over the top it's hard to imagine a reason for watching it except for enjoying the sin. For example, the new Fright Night is nothing but sex and misogyny. The old version was a bit disturbing when you though of how the vampire wanted to make a teenager his bride. But the new one...it's shocking. I can't imagine a good reason for watching it other than maybe writing a paper on vampire films or remakes, or maybe seeing if the new version has the same feel as the first (it doesn't) and then ending the film sick to your stomach.
Of course, I think Christians will need to be more and more careful with what they allow their children to watch and decided how to discuss certain issues/scenes when they come up. The children can't be sheltered forever, but Christians parents (I've never been a parent to anyone other than guinea pigs and fish, but I don't think I'm saying anything that's not common sense) shouldn't allow their children to watch Titanic, for example, at age 5, and when the parents do decide the child's old enough, it couldn't hurt to point out that, no they shouldn't marry an abusive guy for money, but neither should they have premarital sex with someone they just met. There's a third option that involves neither abuse nor that type of sin.
Yeah, I got about one hour of sleep last night so this is kind of stream of consciousness. Probably going to sign off now and remind myself that caffeine is no substitute for sleep and the people on here would rather me wait until I kind post a much more condensed, less rambling post.
