"I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet."
[1 Timothy 2:12]

So I wandered into the Bible Study Room this afternoon, hoping to learn something. At that time there were two women dominating the chat, almost non stop. What they said, and the way the said it, came across as teaching, sometimes even preaching. I guess there's nothing wrong for a woman to express her personal faith in Jesus Christ, but this went way too far in my opinion. Should women be allowed to dominate the chat in such a way at CC (especially in Bible Study Room) if we take scripture seriously? Your thoughts please, preferably backed up with scripture
. Thank you.

I just dont see CC chat or forum as 'Church', more as fellowship...so, ehhh.
But if we were in a Service, then definitely I'd be concerned.

Oooops, I see, you went there to 'learn something', well there's your problem :)

oh no women where chatting online how unbiblical... or sexist from you that you have such an issue with it. I know which one i think it is.

Absolutely nothing wrong with women speaking and teaching on an online message board.

Still, they didn't have "church buildings" either back in early church days.

So much for being a part of the Royal Priesthood.

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Luke 8:16 "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet."
[1 Timothy 2:12]

That verse also can be translated as wife and husband, and in fact, that is exactly what it means by woman and man. Not that all men have authority over all human beings of the female gender.

But church buildings isn't the point. It's when the Body corporately comes together for the purpose of worship, teaching, prayer and breaking of bread...not exactly Christian Chat.

Proverbs 1:20 Out in the open WISDOM calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square;

Probably a more important issue to consider is if their teaching was sound Biblical wisdom?

Actually it is the point. Most of the list you just stated is exactly what I'm talking about. Because they didn't have a "building" they did what you mentioned anywhere (ex. houses). So...CC is very similar except it's an online community...just saying.

Of course 'rudeness' comes in all genders.

They initially met in the temple, the synagogue and homes. it's for what 'purpose' not where.

So do you think women should be banned from speaking in the Bible Study Room?

You still don't see my point. You again have given me a list of things they did in the day, then church buildings came along, and now online communities exist. See?

Been my experience that two women can monopolize a conversation with little effort. Of course two men can accomplish the same feat with ease. I would have little concern unless they were speaking things that were really biblically incorrect.

A little forgiveness shown one to another goes a long way to display Gods love for us.

women preach all the time. we are living in a time where it doesnt matter who preaches as long as the word gets out. if you go into a church there are more women than men. Men have stepped down in a lot of ways if the men wont preach who will? i know there are men preachers but there isnt a lot of men leaders in the church anymore. God sees us as souls not man or woman. There are young kids that preach do you think they shouldnt either? im not picking a argument its that you should think and not put women down for preaching, teaching or speaking about the gospel. you should pray instead of placing an argument. If God calls women to preach why do you have trouble with thinking a woman should keep her mouth shut? in this case words to be quiet? pray about it and God will reveal the truth to you, please dont look down on women.

Sorry, but I have to go by God everytime. Not only when I like the scripture I am reading.
Woman do have roles in the church, and they are very fullfulling. We as women have different jobs, not inferier ones.

I don't think anyone should come to CC with a mentality of trying to teach others, but rather wondering in which way they might offer friendship, prayer and support to the many souls in various states of need here. If the chat owner makes a formal agreement with a minister who receives authorization to come and share the word, then it is one thing, but there is something a bit arrogant about joining somebody's site and claiming to be a teacher for all the other users.

There is a way that we can "teach" our brand of christianity by the manner in which we offer support and share one another's burdens, and the advice we give often sheds light on our beliefs. So if the chat room is not a virtual pulpit for any self proclaimed teacher, then i guess both men and women should be free to share and relate as one would do in an unformal "sofa" chat, sitting around coffee and cake :)

I think the issue is respect of others and a little humility goes a long way.

We see in scripture that women taught outside of the worship service. But I believe that women can and should be able to discuss in a bible class. I do not think it is acceptable for a woman to preach or lead a class of men. In my opinion, a woman can teach a class of women and young children.

I guess it comes down to what is worship. Some say that we are in worship anytime two Christians are gathered. If that be the case, women would hardly ever be able to speak (which might come in handy from time to time:)). Others say that bible class is worship. I am not sure. But, in my opinion, if the elders have a meeting to discuss a problem, a woman should not even be present unless she is asking a question. And if it is a difficult question, she should be asked to leave while the elders converse. I know that I do not have scripture (at least not that I am aware) to be as bold in saying this.

I think part of this command was for men as well. How many times have you seen an event being planned (anywhere, I am not talking about church right here) and a woman/women take over and men move over. Often when there is someone else that wants to take the lead men don't mind stepping aside (Coaching would probably not be a good example of this). The bible does tell us that God wants men to lead.

My wife feels more strongly about this than I do. She recently went to a church, out of town, where a woman read the announcements. I said that it probably wasn't wrong, but should probably be avoided. My wife said that she didn't like it at all and felt that men were being usurped during the announcements as well as other parts of the service. They did not have a woman preacher. I do know that there were women deaconesses. But the job of a deacon was described as "waiting tables" so that the "elders" could tend to spiritual needs. Again women did teach outside of the congregation, but were not allowed to "speak" in church.
