Works is listening to every single word the Lord breathed to man in all scripture and doing our very best to follow every word, never using one scripture to be against another. Never using scripture as a means to justify our personal selves, but humbly listening to the word of the Lord and doing our best to follow it.
It means clearing our mind of the media, the denominations of the church, our fleshly desires, and exclusively making the Lord our guide to being great in the kingdom of heaven after we have been saved.
Works are useless for the unsaved, it is the saved who are told about them.

I believe that using the gifts that Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 12 are what is being addressed when we are told to work. How do you interpret verse 31 "But zealously strive after the better gifts. And yet I show to you a more excellent way." Is Paul telling us that one gift is better than another, and that we should work to find the best gift?

I too believe that we must be saved to understand your gifts and that we must study the scriptures to learn how we are to put them to work. Do you think that we spend a lot of time spinning wheels, rather than employing the gift(s) that God has provided us with?
Anything you DO, is a work.
Peter had a Faith that He could walk on the water to Jesus, But Him taking that step onto the water was a Work of Faith. Anything a person does, is a work
A Work can either be good or it can be bad. The Book of Revelation is clear we are judged by our works. Whether they be good or whether they be bad. What a person does, is that persons work. We are told by the Apostles of Jesus Christ to do good, to be rich in good works, to make sure we are careful to maintain (continue) to do good works. Woe to those who believe they are Saved and have no good works at all. Those who Truly have Jesus in them, WILL have good works. Many claim to be His sheep, but are the goats of Matt 25:32-46. Many goats who think they are sheep will be weeping and gnashing their teeth on that Day the Lord Returns saying to all the goats. i know you not, you that continue to live in sins.
I Timothy 6:18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Titus 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

Could this gift be the gift of love? Reading chapter 13 Paul seems to be saying love is the greatest gift. What yinz think?
I think we do seem to spin our wheels a lot of the times. We can see certain gifts in ourselves more prevalent than others but do we kind of dismiss them a bit? For example maybe I see a certain gift in myself but I feel I'm better at something else so I do the lesser. God gives us each gifts designed for us as to our personality I think. Any ideas or thoughts on this?

I don't believe repentance is a work. Repentance is about asking God to forgive you and cleanse you of your sin. It is all about throwing yourself before God and His mercy. It is not something you can take credit for. You can't take credit for repentance because God is the one who is cleansing you of sin when you seek His forgiveness. You are trusting in God to forgive you (And not yourself to be forgiven). It's about throwing yourself down before Him. For if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We trust and believe in 1 John 1:9 by faith. Our faith in God's promise to deliver us from unrighteousness when we admit our faults before Him is what it is all about. For who was more justified in the Parable of the Tax Collector and the Pharisee? (Luke 18:9-14). Titus 3:5 says we are saved by His mercy and by the washing of the regeneration of the Holy Ghost. In other words, John the Baptist said bring forth fruits worthy of repentance. Fruits are works; And repentance is not labeled as a fruit (or work).

"What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?"
Jesus answered and said unto them,
"This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent." (John 6:28-29).
In other words, one needs to be born again spiritually by repenting of their sins and accepting Jesus (i.e. believing on Jesus). Then God can do the good works thru them (1 Corinthians 15:10) (Philippians 2:13). The works they do are in yielding to the fruits to the Spirit after they accepted the Lord. They are saved by God's grace and mercy. For if a person messes up, they have his grace to fall back upon. God will work with a person and give them time to do the "good work" within their life. It is not usually an overnight process of a Christian being turned into a super Christian instantaneously. For even the great men of faith were not perfect at the start of their life. Their faith was a walk with God and a trust in Him (Whereby holiness and fruitful works eventually flowed as a result from their faith or belief in God). But Abraham was saved before he did any works for God. The thief on the cross was saved without works. Yes, a believer cannot live an immoral life style or flat out reject the commands in the Bible for their life. But a believer (that is elected or chosen) will not live in such a way habitually (Like the world) because they surrendered to God whereby He lives within them and whereby He will convict them to do what is good and right (By the power of His Spirit).

Granted, we all have "free will" both before and after we accept the Lord; But I believe those who endure (i.e. Those who choose Jesus as a way of life until their death) will not fall away from the faith or miss the mark. For they have the comfort and the assurance that Jesus Christ will never leave them nor forsake them; And they have the assurance that nothing external can separate them from the love of Christ. It is only the individual or oneself that makes the choice to stay within the Lord or not. So yes; It is true that God does not force salvation upon people. However, God will work with a person who desires to be in His good graces. There is no fear in us making it to Heaven or not. We trust in God that He saves us now and tomorrow.
