Ben Shapiro is smart and talks really fast. Add to that the tendency to defend rather commonsensical views about society, politics, etc and it's understandable that he does well in debates. He's an orthodox Jew, so there's some common ground but also significant disagreement that I'd have with his religious views.
Jordan Peterson is probably equal or smarter than Shapiro in pure IQ terms, but he seems to have a more profound understanding of some aspects of life and human experience. He just seems somewhat traumatized by the abyss that he has stared into. Not necessarily a bad thing, and I wouldn't consider it a weakness. Peterson also seems to have a profound understanding of the moral implications of belief in a perfect, holy and just God. It just seems that he hasn't fully grasped how awesome the grace of God really is, and therefore he has seemed reluctant to take the final step to Christian belief. But I do think it will probably happen (if it hasn't happened already).
With topics related more to questions like the existence of God and the truth of Christianity, I think William Lane Craig is still the best debater.
