Would Jesus carry a gun?

A famous right for Americans is the right to bear arms. So why would a Christian do it? What ever happened to turning the other cheek?

If you had a family and your spouse and children were threatened would you use deadly force to protect them? What's the Biblical answer? Should we shoot to defend OUR lives? That's not what Jesus taught!
 
Did moses have wars, did jesus tell peter those who live by the sword die by the sword after he cut a soldiers ear off. There is nothing wrong with defending yourself or carrying a weapon. Are our military men who are christians wrong for fighting in war. There is a difference between killing because you have to and murdering someone for no reason. Of coarse deadly force should only be used as last resort. There is nothing wrong or against the gods word by owning a weapon or using it in self defense or hunting. If you are concerned about it but want protection use mace or a taser.
 
because the founding fathers of america were not christian, they were strictly classical liberalists with republic style ideals, and in order to circumvent governments that may become too strong and then overthrow the constitution.

I personally think Jesus would not carry a gun. Instead of using a gun, I think Jesus would have approached the person holding a gun to His head (or just threatening Him with a gun...whatever situation you'd like to put in there.) a very different way...
 
I don't know if he would carry a gun. He's Christ, really isn't a need for that. I don't think he would have ANY issue with anyone doing it though.
 
I would appreciate it if when you give your opinion that you give a reason for said opinion. Or else it's really not worth putting out there in my book. Also, if your reason includes a Holy Bible reference used correctly in context, that would STRONGLY add to said argument.

barukhmalachi has it right to give Scripture. "all who live by the sword, die by the sword" all you need for proof of that is to look at gang wars in the ghettos of America

A modern translation might say this. "all who live by the gun, die by the gun." Wouldn't you agree?

Even Ghandi had that much right. Think about how much good that one person did for India. Also, here in America the Civil Rights movement was won thanks to the teaching of Jesus. No violence needed.

Exactly Relena, that is what I suspect as well. I recently posted similar thoughts in another thread.

I was in the chat rooms today, and I heard some people laughing at this question. Well, I think we need to honestly think about that for a moment. Yes, it does seem like an absurd thing to ask, doesn't it? Why? Because Jesus, as we get to know Him through the scriptures, definitely is not someone who we can imagine carrying a gun. We may laugh at trying to picture that image, but really that should tell us something. If we can't picture our Lord and Saviour carrying a weapon such as a gun, should we as His followers be doing so? And as Christians that is what we are to be, followers of Christ.

Carrying a gun would seem to suggest that we trust God only so much, and that we need a back-up plan. As I said in the other thread, I truly believe that God can and will protect me better than any weapon, and putting my trust fully in Him means that there is no room for other alternatives. If we really trust God, then we trust Him completely, and we would feel no need to resort to other means that would indicate that we need to rely on ourselves when it comes right down to it.

And yes, we are to be different and set apart from the rest of the world. What does it look like to others if we try to share God's message and yet turn around and say essentially, 'but oh, if my life or the lives of my loved ones are ever really in danger, it is not the Lord only I will trust, I need to have the ability to take things into my own hands...because, you never know....God may not come through for me."

That's what I think it seems to say. And, we are commanded to remain in Jesus and follow Him. If He wouldn't have done it, then neither should we. (My opinion anyway.)

Luke 22:36

He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

Jesus is God. If he wants to pour out wrath, guns or human weapons aren't necessary.

People the vast majority of the time approach this issue with little theological understanding. This isn't a simple issue to deal with. In the process, many are condemning the Israelites for their actions, while having been commanded by God.


If using guns for defense indicates a lack of faith, then care to explain why the Israelites defended their nation with weapons? Is that not a lack of faith as well? (be careful with this one, I ask it for a reason)

Why would Jesus need a gun when He could just call down fire from the heavens?
 
Apparently a lot of people here have never had a gun at their head! I have looked down the barrell of an AK47, 357 Magnum, and a Glock 9mm. Really a wierd sight to see and to experience. Human survival instint kicks in when your life or the lives of others is put on the line. Everyone reacts differently and I don't care if you are an Athiest or an Evangelist, FEAR kicks in! Obviously I am still here after those events and I won't say what happened to the other parties involved.

Have I taken life? I won't say! Would I take a life if put in a position of defense? Just don't be on the butt end of the gun or knife (weapon)!
Would I regret it if it happened? Absolutly! However, I am a Christian, I am a human and I am a man, dad, and former husband. Please don't test me on this issue. I will pray for you both before, during and after.

As for Matthew 26:50-53, you missed verse 54! There was a reason why Jesus stopped Peter! Read it in context.

Well I hope I haven't come across to hard, but.... Oh ya, how about the guy who walked into a church service and started shooting a few years back? Were they wrong in shooting him or should have they just started praying and wait for their turn?

Yes God is bigger than a gun or any situation we find ourselves in. However He gave us a gift call, "Comon Sinse".

I'm not here to "argue", but I've got a quote that explains my opinion better than I can. :D

Good use of Scripture. I suspect the purpose of keeping a sword with the disciples as they were sent two by two to witness is a good measure to keep bandits away. It was only later on that Jesus told one of them that cut off the ear of a soldier in the company arresting Jesus that He who lives by the sword dies by the sword. We have to remember that Jesus taught a little at a time. Not all at once. Precept upon precept kind of thing. Either way this isn't as easy of a topic as some people might have it. Or as easy as I made it seem to some.

The question is, then did Jesus pour out his wrath on anyone? No. Plus, He was limited in power as a fully human God man. He did not possess all the abilities of the Father, as is clearly indicated by Scripture. Violence needs strong discernment in cases of determining wars, since we no longer have direct communion from God, as the Israeli ties had in the form of audible speech for a nation. But that's not where I was going with my question. I was more asking about how we as a Christian people respond to the command of Jesus to "turn the other cheek". It's easy to know what that means, but hard to swallow, because no one wants to do this. But out of love that is what Jesus would have us to do those that threaten us. I don't know, however, if I can extend that to caring for one's family in a tough neighborhood.
 
The Lord Jesus never carried any firearm; He didn't carry any money either.

Remember, the Lord Jesus was born to be King of Peace, and we are "God's own possession;" therefore, His Kingdom is not in this World.

In the meantime, you earn your wages and keep yourself and your household safe.
