I thought the elixir would help, but I was being quixotic and naive. When the magic was at it's zenith, she was even more shrewish, if that were possible. When we reached the penultimate bottle, I threw them both away. I really wasn't interested anymore.

I should have been more assertive. If I had been, I might have been neatly tucked into my bedroom now, reading a book or surfing the net instead of traveling half-way around the world to St. Helena with Aunt Selma Lou. I wasn't even sure what the trip was about, and I really wasn't that interested in anything just then, and didn't care to see any duomo cathedrals, or whatever they were. Old buildings no longer used, mostly.
I had spiraled into a depression since loosing my job, and my temper wasn't improved by the idea that they were trying to cheer me up. I didn't want to be cheered, I didn't want to be pulled out of my misery, and I didn't plan to find one bit of enjoyment in this trip. That is, until we got to the hotel, and I met Andy, the lead bellhop.

I watched the miniscule figure stagger through the desert on some old western. Did he crave a cold, sweet dessert, I wondered. Higgledy-piggledy stacks of oddly shaped rocks of orange, red, and yellow stood topsy-turvy in the distant background as he slowly caromed aimlessly towards oblivion. I savored the almond-flavored sweetness of my blancmange as the old black flickered in my peripheral vision. I flinched as 'Zounds, my gigantic tabby, casually swatted my bare toes with his concertina-like claws. As I scowled menacingly at him, I saw a meteorite flit across the darkening sky outside my glass patio door. A scimitar-wielding fellow exploded over the top of a sand dune on a dromedary, causing me to realize that I wasn't watching a western, but probably something about Egypt, or some other melancholy Middle Eastern country. There was something miraculous shining in the eastern sky. Eventually, I woke up and realized the whole thing had been dream. Too much pistachio almond ice cream before bed.
