Teh Bible talks alot about self-control. How exactly (practically) do you develop self-control?

It's a process we have to go through
I don't have much myself, but i do try
;)
It's not something we can learn from others, we just have to go through it

Hi joshhuntnm,
Patience. We are all works in progress. Love and worship God with all your heart and love your neighbour. Seek to do good. He will come and teach you. Be patient, always give thanks. What may be a tragedy to you today is seen rightfully as a blessing when understanding comes.

Be patient
love in Jesus

Reading the book of James?

Self control comes through prayer, patience, trial and time. God will hone you across time - I have the scrape marks to prove it. However, you can help the process!

Say the problem is speaking when you should not, or speaking too soon and regretting it, etc. Stop speaking your mind! Keep your mouth shut until asked or at least for a twenty count from when you wanted to say something.

You are impulsive. Well, try not reacting to your feelings, emotions and impulses! Oh so hard, but again try a twenty count to see if you can change your initial impulses before you act.

Yes, all of the solution require you to deny yourself the pleasure of reacting to the situation, through delaying. During that delay, you maybe be able to stop or modify the reaction you will be sorry for. During the delay, God has a chance to intervene (if you really want Him to). Even a 10% improvement is still a start!

For areas of self control wherein the end result is sin, do not expect a great deal of help - God expects you to be in prayer over your sin life, to not yield to temptation, to not allow opportunities to turn into temptations, and to avoid situations where opportunities exist for you in your area of weakness. That does not mean He will not help, He can, but He expects you to fight your problems and you do have the Holy Spirit as an assist in that one. Yeah the concept of self-loathing was rather strong in my early years!

And yes, examples I gave are/were my problem areas I had to kick the habit of, hence why I used them .....

First we overcome by surrender. We surrender to God and He works in us. If we make this a habit regardless of how we feel then we will gain self control which is God will control our self.

What Abiding said! ;)

I began babysitting at 10--can you imagine? and love kids, so I kept it up. The year I was 16, I made $5,000 babysitting, back when the going rate was $.75-$1.00 per hour!...then I raised 6 of my own. One of the things I've observed in all that caring for children is that infants completely lack self-control. Toddlers have a greater measure than infants, school age children more than toddlers, and so it goes.
I think a parallel can be made for us as infants in the faith, then toddlers, etc. Just as our earthly parents teach us self-control, as do circumstances in life, so our Father in heaven will teach us, if we will submit to Him. (great point, Laodicea!)
We read the Word, sit under good teaching thereof, and spend time with the Lord in prayer.

I heard an application story in church once. A young man is seen in the market holding his infant son while his wife is at the check-out. The baby is crying, and the daddy says, "Take it easy, John, you have to control your temper." When a woman approaches him to congratulate him on his way with speaking to babies, he replies, "Baby, nothing. MY name is John!"
Circumstances that challenge our self-control will be graciously brought into life by the Lord to give us practice; to give us the opportunity to submit our will to God.
My 2 cents, for what it's worth.

Thanks, Josh--I think I'll have to do a topical study on self control for a better view of this. :)
