a good rule when reading the Word is to read three to four verses before and after the verse to get the contents of the verse if you have done this I don't know why this verse would be confusing to you !
sometime you may have the read the whole verse, but must of the time the above rule will work

Both those who are alive when Christ returns and the dead will be changed into incorruptable, immortal bodies. That's all it is really saying.
I don't think this passage gives any clues about what happens to the soul.
I think if you believe in "soul sleep", then the soul and body will be raised up from death at the same time.
Or if you believe the soul has gone somewhere, either heaven, or a hades or place of the dead, wherever, then the soul will come back from wherever it was and enter back into the resurrected immortal body at the same instant it is changed.

When we die our body of flesh and bones goes into the ground. If God has provided a place for our fleshly body, would He also provide a place for our soul? I does not seem reasonable that God would leave our soul in a state of 'limbo' or sleep. Maybe someone can give some insight into (2Cor 5:8) in the context of (verses 6-10) that states. 'to be absent from the body and present with the LORD'. Is the soul, that part of the believer which is present with the LORD?

I have often wondered this same thing BLC, do you think the minute we draw our last breath here on this earth, then our souls are with God in heaven? Im with you at this point as far bein in a state of limbo...I dont think ( and this is my opinion), we just dont do anything, I personally think we are goin to be in the presence of God when we leave this earth. Good subject btw..gets the mind to wonderin, and wantin to study it further.
'...to be absent from the body and present with the LORD' . I think there can be no doubt or confusion as to being present with the LORD, who is at the right hand of the Father (Col 3:1). To quote (John 14:3), Jesus said, 'And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also'. Some have referred to the soul as having a body (soul body), being made up of the mind, emotions, volition, conscience and a self or God conscious capacity. The example that has been mentioned in scriptures is the beggar Lazarus and the rich man in (Luke 16:20-31). It appears that the rich man lifted his eyes in hell could exercise all of his faculties being able to recognize Abraham. I don't believe he had his physical body that he had on the earth, because he died and that body was in the grave.
