1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.


Here' mine:


There is no temptation that comes upon your mind that is not common to all men in the flesh, and this applies to women also. In other words, when you stand with the true armor of the gospel on and in place, and you are delivered up before the destroyer which was the subject of verse ten, then at that time God will provide the way that you will escape. You are not even to premeditate what you are going to say at that time.

Interesting verse, wonder what the definition of temptation is.

I suppose most will think of sinful acts, but just suppose for a moment
that it also includes lack of faith, being too self reliant, tempted to do things
our way instead of God's way, lack of thankfulness etc.

I've always felt there is more to these verses than meets the eye, if
you read the proceeding verses they mention not only sexual immorality,
but also complaining.

Wonder how many of us complain to much.

The temptations we face can be overcome through Jesus Christ, not always avoided. The Lord will provide the way out and it will not require one to sin to overcome it.
 
What was the temptation common to the church of Corinth?

They had problems with:

Fornication
Abuse of the Lords Supper
Idolatry

So their temptation would have most likely been in these areas. Also they would have influence from the Pagans around the city of Corinth, tempting them.

But God would give the believers in the church of Corinth a way out of these.
 
Look at 1 Cor 10:12 --- Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

The way I see 1 Cor 10:13, it is a warning to us that we do not stand within our own ability. If we think we can overcome the temptation of the flesh without the help of God, Who is faithful to make a way for us to escape, we are in jeopardy of falling.


1 Peter 4:

12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

My take on it is,now we really do not have an excuse if we sin,for if God will find a way for us to escape a temptation,how can we use the excuse that I cannot abstain from sin,if we can even escape the temptation.If we can escape the temptation,surely we can escape the sin.

The tempter, be it Satan, demons, or people will provide temptations every opportunity, even getting together to plan against us like happened to Jesus. His way of dealing with those was to rely upon the word of God, which he had meditated over all his life. When tempted greatly by Satan after fasting 40 days he responded to the three temptations with the scriptures.

That should be sufficient, to know the scriptures well enough to instantly respond like Jesus would. Since about 1985 I have practiced speaking appropriate scripture out loud to all tempters. It still dramatically impacts the average sinner.

Couple 1 Cor 10:13 with James 4:7. Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you, Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.

When God draws near you have all the backup you need to resist temptation, therefore avoid sin. I submit to God by continually studying and meditating in his word, agreeing with him, preparing to reckon God's solution.

Since every temptation is in common among all mankind, there already exists a way of escape provided by God for every temptation. With God drawn near I can trust that no temptation will come my way until God knows I can apply his escape. In my years when God was not welcome near me, many temptations presented themselves sometimes like a volley of arrows descending upon me, without a shield. Upon being born again it took years of sanctification to be trained by God to walk his walk, seeing fewer and fewer temptations. Satan will quickly depart from me, and I will not worry about what he plans next, for he isn't allowed to spring something too hard to handle until I've already made up my mind about it.
 
Whatever we go through in life, there is nothing that happens to us that we cannot withstand if we are walking in the perfect will of God. If we rely on our flesh, we may miss that way of escape that God gives to us. We need discernment to see what God offers and make the strive to escape our temptation. As we rely on self, the flesh, and the world's way out of problems, we fall back down that slippery slope. God offers His hand to help guide us through our situations, but if we do not take it, then our situation will get worse and worse. God sits and waits for us to take what He offers, but that's our choice to make. Perhaps after we finally see that God's way is best and take His hand, we will be more quick to listen, obey, and abide.

God's way is always the best way. It may not seem like it when we operate in the flesh, but as we listen to His voice and discern what He wants us to do in His perfect will, we will see that He knows best and His way will always lead to the best outcome.
