I was born into a family that suffered from alcoholism.
both mother and father were alcoholic and both died from the condition.
I've been soooooooooooooooooo sick that I was admitted to 3 rehabs and even placed
into a mental hospital once.
The psychiatrist interviewed me and booted me out (discharged) me saying that there was
nothing wrong with me that constituted a "mental" illness.
I've been in A.A. recovery for quite a while now and help others afflicted to recover.
I disagree with the psychiatrist as I DO believe alcoholism IS a mental illness.
The disease affects the mind, body, and spirit ergo it is an illness that affects the entire personality.
Do others here seen the disease as a spiritual malady as well as a physical and mental disorder?
Disease = dis-ease= ill at ease with "self".
In A.A. we ALL pray to a Higher Power of our understanding.
Without that we simply will not recover.
Period.
Some unknowing people are of the opinion that A.A. is a RELIGIOUS organization.
Your thoughts?
Mine are that it isn't religious but spiritual.
I've never met an atheist in A.A.
If there are any I'd venture to speculate they don't last too long sober.

I just wanted to add:
I'm a disabled police officer with 22.5 years service.
I was disabled with broken back #4, 3 concussions, + numerous other injuries.
I suffer from p.t.s.d. delayed syndrome but I think that is not the issue it once was.
5 years in psychotherapy helped.
4 of my fellows were institutionalized for mental "disorders" associated with p.t.s.d.
My partner in the detective division committed suicide not long ago.
Alcoholism is the "hidden" police issue.
Don't see, don't talk!
I'm in remission and no longer use alcohol or any other "drug".
I have profound faith in the God of my understanding and give thanks for every day
of sobriety.
I believe my faith did more to heal my unseen wound than psychotherapy ever could.
As an aside, lest anyone think I solicit sympathy, ( I don't) I went on to earn two degrees and
retired again with 8 years with General Motors.:)

I quit drinking after 15 years Strong . The reason i quit was i went threw a divorce and the new chick i was dating didn't drink , was in church, and had school aged kids. I do agree that drinking a mental illness. The sad thing about alcohol is that its cheap and legal with a store on almost every corner .

AA= Live a life of suppressing the issue.

Jesus= Walk away from the issue in a new life.

A long time ago I was associated with the J.W.'s and even had a Bible study with them.
I got shunned for becoming a police officer. REALLY???????
I mean what if I became a dope dealer would that have been o.k.?

My mother was a baptized J.W. but dad was a not committed Christian.
Dad put up a Christmas tree and mom took part in the gift thing but HID it from her J.W. fellows.
One really nice lady was a J.W. and someone saw a pack of smokes in her purse and squealed
on her to the elders.
She got booted out for having the smokes.
Why not "consul" with her instead?????? I dunno.
A baptized J.W. woman and I dated. I wasn't baptized but she was. I was a cop. So she got booted for
dating me! WHAT!?
I felt like some kind of pariah that was unfit.
Another married lady J.W. I was friends with divorced her husband for being an addicted gambler and he would
not even buy food for her 3 daughters.
SHE got booted too.
Perhaps these examples are just one way too strict congregation????
I dunno.
To THIS day I feel guilty for taking part in Christmas & b-days
& I just turned 70!

But I WAS pleased with the presents and cake!;)
