Etymology always important! Awesome..thank you

Most people would not define heresy this way when asked...Google searches typically only produces present day meanings, and while many may argue the evolution or devolution depending on how one view's it... the definition of words has been altered over the years for various reasons

We must not forget that the word heretic comes from two Greek words and means opinionated one......just saying

Here is what https://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionary/heresy/ says:

Heresy
[N]

from a Greek word signifying (1) a choice,

(2) the opinion chosen, and

(3) the sect holding the opinion.

In the Acts of the Apostles (
5:17; 15:5; & Isaiah 24:5;Isaiah 24:14; 26:5)
it denotes a sect, without reference to its character. Elsewhere, however,
in the New Testament it has a different meaning attached to it.

Paul ranks "heresies" with crimes and seditions (
Galatians 5:20).

This word also denotes divisions or schisms in the church (
1 Corinthians 11:19).

In
Titus 3:10 a "heretical person" is one who follows his own self-willed
"questions," and who is to be avoided. Heresies thus came to signify
self-chosen doctrines not emanating from God (
2 Peter 2:1).

Believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has come back already.

Well Jesus came back in the form of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost and is with us in Spirit to this day.. But that is not the physical return of Jesus that will happen on the day of the LORD.. So Jesus has come back and has not yet returned..

Believe that Hell is not forever and ever and ever.
Well Hell is not forever and ever.. Hell is a prison of souls who are destined for the eternal Lake of fire which is forever and ever... Hell will be cast into the lake of fire..

Revelation 20: KJV
14 "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. {15} And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."

Believe that the Lake of Fire is not forever, and ever.
Yes the Lake of Fire is forever and ever..

Believe that God can not be stopped by Satan, or any other Force.

Yes God cannot be stopped by satan or any other force..

Believe that God can and will draw all men unto Himself.
All men such as God will draw Africans Europeans Mongolians Indians Arabs, Chinese, Aboriginals, Polynesians Mayans Inuit,, Yes ... But not all men as in all human beings that exist..

Believe that God doesn't stop working after someone dies, and leaves them in hell forever, or the lake of fire forever.
Once someone is cast into the eternal Lake of Fire they will be in the Lake of Fire forever and ever.. God will leave them there..

Believe that God is love, and mercy triumphs over judgement.
Gods Mercy only triumphs over Gods Judgement when people take advantage of Gods mercy by accepting the Way He has made for people to be forgiven.. Through the Atonement of the LORD Jesus Christ.. If a person rejects that Mercy then they will face the full force of Gods judgement and they shall have eternity in the Lake of Fire..

Believe that Hell is real
Hell is real..

Believe that Lake of fire is real.
The Lake of Fire is real..

Believe that you can just be baptized by believe in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Yes believing Jesus and trusting in the Atonement He secured for us makes us baptized in the Spirit..

Believe that you don't have to understand the trinity to be saved, by the Lord Jesus Christ, and God.
That's a grey area... If one believes Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit are 3 separate beings then they have denied that Jesus is LORD...

Believe that anyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ has freedom to live life by the spirit, of the Lord, and Love God, and Love Others, freely with no one having dominion over them, making choices as they make them, in their communication with God as well.
One must be responsive to the Leading of the Holy Spirit..

Believe the Holy spirit indwells all those who believe in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Well that all depends on what one means by """ Believing in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ"""" ?

Believe i'm only accountable to God, and not other people and what they do with their own life, and I understand I impact peoples lives when ever I am around them, and am responsible for the way I act.
I have no troubles with that..

Thank you MatthewG.:)

If there is no shared understanding and definition of the terms there is no meaningful conversation.

Maybe the OP will share what he believes is heretical

For some not believing in a pre-trib rapture is heresy and on and on.....
For me rapture timing is not a doctrine of salvational importance...

Even believing or disbelieving in a rapture is not a doctrine of salvation importance..

You should believe in Jesus, not in OSAS! Whoever OSAS is: he will never bring you salvation! LOL! :p
I don't believe ones stance on OSAS matters.. It is not a doctrine of salivational importance..

Yeah, that's always the tricky part. :p
Aye, there's the rub. When you study the writings of the Early Church Fathers against heresies, you note that they used rather strong language against heretics. There are many men and women today who really should not be preaching and teaching, but they do it anyway. But what is significant is that the false teachers are very "popular" (through ear-tickling) and are generally the ones who have accumulated great wealth from bilking gullible Christians, whereas the faithful men are unpopular and barely getting by. We can rest assured that each and every one will give account.

OSAS is not an ogre. It is the belief that every genuine believer is eternally secure in Christ, and in their salvation. That is exactly what the Bible teaches, but those who disagree are not regarded as heretics -- simply misguided brethren and sisters.

This crossed my mind today and I'm curious what y'all think:

Can a Minister, such as a Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland, Joyce Myers, Mike Murdock, Peter Popoff, Jim Bakker, Robert Tilton, (well, you get the idea) preach heresy and yet actually be saved?

Is it even possible?

Can they be wrong on a few subjects, or must the heresy be abundant and so far out in left field there can be no doubt they are lost?
For most the answer is maybe, depends on the heresy.

But for OSAS believers, yes. For them salvation is not about what you believe but when or if you believed. If the preacher at some point in his past believed then what he teaches now is moot concerning his own salvation.

I think it matters a great deal. If our security is in question we will live in fear - always unsure if we are saved, or if we lost salvation.

Nowhere in scripture does it record a person becoming saved, losing there salvation, and getting saved again.

How can one rest if their salvation hangs by a thread?

Here is how you can know.

Romans 10: 4 For Christ is an end of law for righteousness (The Law) to every one who is believing,

5 for Moses doth describe the righteousness that [is] of the law, that, `The man who did them shall live in them,'

6
and the righteousness of faith doth thus speak: `Thou mayest not say in thine heart, Who shall go up to the heaven,' that is, Christ to bring down?

7
or, `Who shall go down to the abyss,' that is, Christ out of the dead to bring up.

8
But what doth it say? `Nigh thee is the saying -- in thy mouth, and in thy heart:' that is, the saying of the faith, that we preach;

9
that if thou mayest
confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and mayest believe in thy heart that God did raise him out of the dead, thou shalt be saved,

10
for with the heart doth [one] believe to righteousness, and with the mouth is confession made to salvation;

11
for the Writing saith, `Every one who is believing on him shall not be ashamed,'

12
for there is no difference between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord of all [is] rich to all those calling upon Him,

13
for every one -- whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, he shall be saved.'

1 John 5:13 These things I did write to you who are believing in the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that life ye have age-during, and that ye may believe in the name of the Son of God. (YLT)

1 John 5:13
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God,that you may know that you have eternal life. (NLT)

We as Christians are never to rest but be ever watchful.

Salvation is never hanging on a thread. Only a purposeful decision can change our destiny.

I do not believe in OSAS but sleep quite well. I do not live in fear.

The "rest" I was referring to is the rest of assurance. The assurance that salvation is truly a gift that cannot be returned. If it could be lost or given back, it was never free, eternal, or unmerited.

Any freely given gift must be returnable or rejectable. Any gift that is not rejectable is not by nature a gift.
