The Syriac has it as Bar Abas
Bar in Hebrew is an honourific similar to San in Japanese. Joseph Smith in Japanese would be Smith-san where as in Hebrew it would be bar-Joseph.
These unique linguistic styles are not translated into the source language in normal translations.

From what I've learned, "Bar" is Aramaic, "Ben" is the Hebrew equalvalent. Meaning "son of"
