Qualifications for Ministry

1 Timothy 3:1-13

This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Bishop - Strongs G1985

a superintendent, i.e. Christian officer in genitive case charge of a (or the) church (literally or figuratively): KJV -- bishop, overseer.

Deacons - Strongs G1249
probably from an obsolete diako (to run on errands; compare 1377); an attendant, i.e. (genitive case) a waiter (at table or in other menial duties); specially, a Christian teacher and pastor (technically, a deacon): KJV -- deacon, minister, servant.

Titus 1:6-9
If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

1 Timothy 2:12,13
I do not allow a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

For Adam was first formed, then Eve

Paul bases his viewpoint on creation. In v. 13 he says, "For Adam was first created, then Eve." In the least, this argument shows that Paul is not restricting his treatment to the church; it's a matter that is grounded in the constitutional differences between men and women, or at least in the order of authority that God had ordained. In Gen 2-3, we see an interesting phenomenon relevant to 1 Tim 2. God teaches man, man teaches woman, the devil is out of the picture. That's Gen 2. But in Gen 3, we see the devil teaching woman, woman teaching man, and God is out of the picture. And this is Paul's argument: there is a divinely ordained order to things that, if disturbed, could bring ruin.

1 Timothy 2:12 Almost every commentator says that women should not pastor or teach over men. The argument the Apostle Paul gives for his statement "I do not permit a women to teach or to exercise authority over a man" is found in the following 2 verses. His argument is actually not from culture as some claim but from creation. The validity of his argument and the weight of this statement plants its roots in the creation order. Which means that the statement he makes regarding women not teaching over men (essentially pastoring) stands for all-time and to all cultures everywhere, because he doesnt appeal to culture for his reasons but the creation ORDER.

A woman's ministry:

Careful eisegesis makes it clear the "tongues of fire" in Acts 2 symbolize the flame in each woman's kitchen, and that her cooking ministry has been settled forever in heaven!

How could any woman leave such a holy calling whilst her husband pleads earnestly to the heavens for fluffy biscuits?

Woe unto the woman who leaves her ministry, who destroys the gaunt and hungry man, who leaves him to die by the foulness of his own wretched cooking!

Woe!

Sadness and woe.

Don't forget the gravy! Smooth and creamy, no lumps, delicious and savory.
Also may we never forget, that God pronounced creation good; it was good at
every turn until He created woman, and only then was it pronounced very good :)

Very good indeed. God created man originally to be lacking. Why would he need a helper if he has it all together?

I believe that question is the root of whether women should or shouldn't be allowed to be pastors.

It's been on my mind because I believe God has called me to some type of ministry.

I am not sure what role it is but I know He has blessed me and expects me to bless others .

I know he will show me how to help others and where to go.

However, I also believe in using the Bible to test my feelings and innermost thoughts to see if they really are from God.

Right now I feel a call to ministry and have applied to become a Stephen minister.

.I believe going to Stephen ministry training is a good step....that's when you do one on one counseling with people who need prayer and someone to listen to them..men with men and women with women, so folks don't need to freak out about the word minister.

My question goes down to what duties within the church can a woman hold according to the Bible?

I know many people will throw man made traditions and history on both sides of the debate, but from the Bible what are we told?

I will pull what I wrote in another thread and ask your thoughts upon it.
"The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world." In Proverbs 31, the mom that raised a king ruled the world in a round about way. Because her influence and teaching effected the decisions of a king over his people. But when he became an adult and a king, did she push him aside and rule over the people directly? No.

We all have our positions, but for anyone to say that that makes men more important than women (or visa versa) is to call God a liar. He says there is no male or female in Christ, and that He does not practice favoritism. We will only have positions of male or female, young or old, rich or poor, or nationality while we are on this earth, but it won't be so in heaven.

But while on earth, women have their curse, and so do men. Personally, I would rather get my pain over during childbirth than to experience it daily- with thorns and hard labor- that's men's punishment. And for a man to force a woman to experience both punishments is going against God.

But part of women's punishment is to let men lead. It's not because we can't- it's our punishment ladies. "Will I not drink of the cup my Father has given me to drink?" Swallow your pride men and women.

Jesus says "If you love Me you will obey what I command." Jesus told the apostles what to write in the Bible- those are not the laws of the apostles- those are the laws of Christ! Which include that women are not to teach over the men of the congregation. Teach children? Yes. Teach women? Yes. Teach worldly men and women? Yes. But we must not teach the men in the assembly of the saints (church). Women are to remain silent during the sermon. If the church is all women, she is still not permitted to go in the pulpit and preach to the congregation. She must remain silent. Though an all female congregation may play a prerecorded sermon spoken by a man.

Accept it, don't accept it, but if you don't obey it you'll have to answer to God.

Jesus used Mary Magdalene to tell the Disciples that he had risen and where they would meet him. They didn't believe her which goes to show how thick some of us fellows can be.

The Lord had Deborah rule over Israel for a period of time. Does that count?
Deborah was a powerful leader, prophetess and given a great deal of power and authority. IMO this should let women know its ok to teach. it says so much more than the paul passage out of context "wives be silent" which has nothing to do with teaching anyway.
our true body is neither male or female so why does it even matter.

My grandmother has been gone for some time now, she was certainly a blessing to me. I have never preached from a pulpit even though I probably know the bible better then most who do. I don't really have any desire to do so unless the situation demanded it. I just never had any desire to be in authority over anyone else. I do like to share what I know from the bible and from personal experiences with God.
Yeah the irony is that talking in front of a group of more tha, 10 pushes me out of my comfort zone. However if I feel that God has something for me to say, I no longer look at the number of people because I just focus on Him and his message.

I found that out during my Emmaus walk last Sept.

Jesus had 12 apostles - men, not even one woman.
Jesus had 70 disciples - men, not even one woman.

Jesus had several women as friends, helping him.

I think that the right order of things is to have men as leaders and teachers and women for a practical help to ministry.

Yes, Deborah, maybe Priscilla and maybe one other, now we have all 3 possible examples from whole the Bible from thousands of years of biblical history.
It seems to me more like very few exceptions than examples to follow in our daily life and church service.

Because marriages have become so broken that many are trying to hold society together with duct tape verses from the Bible.

For some me its easier to blame their wives or exwives for not submitting to their authority, than see how they haven't submitted to God's or acted as a leader of the family.

A lot of people ignore that Christ teaches that to lead one must folllow, to be placed in authority means one must serve and sacrifice of time, energy and prayers. Often it's thankless job in that at least one perrson will find something to criticize.

To stay humble, you can't dismiss their words because they may be the Holy spirit rebuking you. So you must pray and seek God's guidance through scripture.

So yeah someone asked if I weighed the costs.,, I have seen some, and found as another admitted I don't want power and authority and criticism and sacrifice to serve others. But God asks us, will we do His will even if the cost seems to make it hard to bear?

Will we step out of our comfort zone to do His will and help those He sends us to speak and pray with?

I believe the only power and authority a pastor has is the one we give to them, and sometimes we give them power and authority that belongs only to God and our spouses.

God has taught me to seek HIM and his answers first before seeking the advice of others.

Normally I would have a problem and ask others if a solution, instead of praying and asking God.

In this case I have prayer and feel like God has given me a partial answer...maybe not His whole plan,, but a decent start that lets me plan to 41st least October.

How ever my plans always change, but He keeps me on track.

Jesus was ahead of his time in the treatment of women.
.he talked to the woman at the well who was shunned by others

He had women disciples like Mary who sat at His feet

What I want to know is why is being a pastor different than what those three and other women in the Bible have done?

Why have people elevated pastors to a position above the rest of the body of Christ?

I know that the Methodist church typically rotates pastors every 5 years or give or take, so that the church does not fall into that type of idolary most major decisions are done by committees made up of church elders.

Jay, the role of Deborah has nothing to do with the role which the woman has in the church according the NT. There is no link! You have to put it out of context and fill it
with your view. If you have this view, then you just have to ignore the word of God. Post 46 from onefaith brings it to the point. Even if the most will disagree! But we have to follow what God teaches and not what pleases us weak human beings.

I think that the american term" pastor" got elevated to some unrealistic position of authority mixing bishop, elder, preacher, teacher, prophet and minister. I think it is unbiblical and such role must be divided into several positions/people.

Some pastors seem to consider themselves to be the head of the local church in everything, even counseling women against their husbands etc, saying people what job to do or what school to choose....

Read acts where Paul set eldest in the churches. Read 1.Tim. 3 where Paul discribes the qualitys which an eldest (you can use also Pastor ore Leader) should have. This why is a difference! They have a special Task, authority and responsibility.

I agree wolfwint, we should follow God and not men.

Is the teaching of no women pastors from God or a man-made doctrine by the Catholic church?

The persecuted church had home meetings where both men and women played a part in ministry.

I am sure if God lead a woman to share a testimony or prophecy or word of wisdom, no one would say "shut up,your just a woman"

Before church buildings, what did it mean to be a pastor or a teacher?

Also lets looks at the two often quoted verses IN CONTEXT, because people rip them out to prove their point,

One is for women to be silent and ask their husbands at home. Telling us that they weren't trying to teach but learn. So that isn't a commandment forbiding women teachers as I have often been told if you read it in context.

The second is also to married women. The admonishment is between telling women to wear the veils in their head to show their humilty and submissions to their husband and his they will be blessed with children if they are humble and godly wives.

I believe that the objection to women pastors is based upon only reading a few scriptures out of context.
