And I'm speaking of God's design. God created people with a symbiotic relationship between INTENTION (our "heartstate") and ACTION.
Sometimes people change because they've been effected in their HEART and it manifests in their ACTIONS. Sometimes people change because they adjust their ACTIONS and soon their heart changes. There is nothing linear about this idea.
In fact, it is an idea that God-fearing people live out on a daily basis. For example, I don't really feel like getting up early to read my bible and pray, it's been a hard week. However, I engage in the ACTION because I've made a commitment, and low and behold, the feelings soon follow. OR I don't really feel like I love my husband...he's getting on my last nerve, but I will demonstrate the ACTIONS of love and soon my heart will follow. OR I don't really know if I believe God fully, but I will pray and ACT AS IF I believe God fully and soon I do believe.
Now, if you want to make the argument that the presence of the Holy Spirit within a person is the key to all of this, I'll agree. However, sometimes the Holy Spirit urges us to ACTION in order to reshape our interior, and sometimes the Holy Spirit reshapes our INTERIOR in order to facilitate action.
Coincidentally, this is an observable reality reflected in a multitude of studies across a variety of fields of expertise.
