We do know that historically angels have aided the people of God in conflict with their enemies. God has even at times dispatched armies of angels to stand against the enemies of God' people. For example: Do you remember the story of Elisha and Gechazi?
"Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha" 2Kings 6:17. Although Michael is not mentioned here, this is a perfect example of God dispatching his angels to contend with the armies of Samaria.

I think this would be something for another thread. But the short answer is that these symbols are used repeatedly throughout scripture as judgment figures to show that God was about to bring judgment and destruction upon some particular nation. In the case of Matt. 24 that nation was Israel. But that should be for another thread. Let us not hijack this thread to pursue this.
What God is saying about leviathan is not that he is a king over people but that his strength is superior to all others. No one has the right to boast before him. Read that entire chapter and notice all the physical characteristics that God assigns to this creature. He even begins by saying in verse one. “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook? Or press down his tongue with a cord?"
