I know about this. I spent the first two or three years of my Christian life zealously working for God. Nothing wrong with that, that's what we're commanded to do. But I did not know was how to be successful and consistent in what truly counts-character. Character that then drives the successful and powerful life of obedience to God.

Instead of Christians being swayed away from 'working' for God, for fear they'll be sinfully serving him in the power of themselves alone, as it seems most teachings lean towards, I want to see Christians taught that it is through a change of your character and how you behave that will bring you into the promised power to be obedient and pleasing to God. That character being defined by the fruit of the Spirit-patience, long suffering, self control, peace, compassion, sympathy, etc. When you are patient you will be patient. When you are long suffering inside you will suffer long. When you are at peace inside you will be a peaceable person, etc. That is the key to the Christian life. Not doing anything is NOT the answer to the danger of serving God in the power of your own self.
So instead of not doing anything to gain the virtues, what is the thing to do to gain the virtues?

The prodigal son rejected and returned. The key is always returning.
The prodigal son never stopped believing his father was his father

He just wanted to try things on his own, And realised like all of us who haved done this how fruitless this is, We go to our knees real quick because it never works.

Thats we we always return (plus jesus said he would come after us)

Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?...
Galatians 3:5
You can answer this one. Did the Galatians receive God's Spirit because they took a turtle dove to the Levite Priests to perform the Levitical Priesthood sacrificial, ceremonial "works of the Law" for remission of sins the Jews were still pushing on the Galatians? Or did they "turn to God" and His Righteousness, and repent and bring works worthy of repentance?

The bible speaks of beating swords into plowshares but fish?

For the cause of Christ
Roger
Yes, he will beat the fish into harmless plowshares, but the way he will do it is by beating it against EG until it is a harmless piece of meat. :D

That's not what Paul taught. There are numerous other passages that convey this same idea.
But I discipline my body and subjugate [it], lest somehow [after] preaching to others, I myself should become disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:27
I was going to address that too, but decided not to.

It is true. Obedience is about bringing the desires of the flesh into submission.

By growing the qualities/fruit of the Spirit within us the desires of our flesh are brought into submission. That is the spiritual battle we wage and which God says we have the victory in. We are warriors who bring our sinful desires into submission to us. That is how we reign with Christ, now and in the age to come. We have authority and power over created flesh and bring it into submission to us instead of it bringing us into submission to it.

The curse of God on humanity is that creation have authority over humanity. Created things tell us what to do. In Christ, we get that authority back and we rule over creation. Instead of our bodies and various substances telling us what to do and when to do it we take authority over it and say, "not gonna happen, back off, I rule over you now. I have this power and authority in Christ."

Of course it's a good verse AND it has everything to do with your thread. :) You are posting verses about works being rewarded and I'm posting that the Bible says; we are not rewarded for our works we are all that we are because of Jesus. We have the blessings of God IN Christ., not IN and because of our works.

Our inheritance is found not in our works of righteousness that we have done... but 100% because of what Jesus gave us IN and because of His righteousness.

All scriptures are tied together. One Scripture does not beat up another as many people try to do. The scripture you posed agree completely with the OP as does all scripture. It is the mind of man who creates divisions in the Words of God. Religious men at that. IMO.

...or he abandons his believing because he no longer wants the word of God because of trials and temptations-Luke 8:13.
So he is going to go to trust self. and that is going to work (smh) and then he is going to go where?

It is called rock bottom, and what happens? You always return to christ. (I have done this myself many a time, and I have witnessed it in MANY many a time.

God is not unfaithful, ever. He is always there to help me believe and persevere to the end. What you are ignoring is I can choose to not want his faithful help anymore and I can go back to unbelief.
What you fail to understand is that if your FAITH is in God, then the ONLY way your FAITH will fail is if GOD becomes untrustworthy.

The only people who lose faith are people that never trusted God to begin with. Their house was built on the sand, and trials and tribulations came, and the house was destroyed, But those who build their house on the rock, it will never be destroyed. Because it is all rooted in Christ.

You make a horrible mistake when you broad stroke this to mean every single person who 'leaves' never believed Christ is the Messiah in the flesh to begin with.
John said they, meaning all of them.. It is not a horrible mistake. the horrible mistake would be to make John said somethign HE NEVER SAID.

He said THEY (those who now reject Christ) vs YOU (you have been born of God and do not need to be taught, because you know the truth.

We know that's not what he's trying to say and was only talking about this particular group who left because he then warns the true believers who didn't leave to not also leave but instead to continue to abide in Christ.

wow man, He said who he spoke of. those who left and NOW DENY CHRIST.

Of course he warned others not to leave, it would be foolish for him to assume they all were believers. Even James told us to test our faiht make sure it is real and not a claimed faith only.

"24As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.

28Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming."-1 John 2:24,28

why did you skip the most important part of that passage? IF WHAT YOU HEARD IN THE BEGINNING ABIDES IN YOU,, what does this mean?? IF YOUR SAVED, Those who are saved HAVE THE WORD ABIDING IN THEM (the gospel)

see what happens when youi pick and chose words and ignore the rest?

"...through (Christ) who strengthens me"-Philippians 4:13. That's the part you and others leave out to make 'work' look like the four letter word never to be uttered in the church.

You have to stop automatically always hearing 'works' as the evil self righteous attempt to serve God. The 'I' in the works of the believer does not have to automatically without exception mean 'me' alone doing righteous things apart from God. God did not take 'you' out of the equation. He did not take away our choice to walk in the Spirit or not. Righteous work is you and God in union. But you can not boast in that since you can't do it except he made it possible for you to do it.

oh boy, More you and less God.

Our faith is what causes us to work, It is GOD who works.

when we stop trusting god in an area, or we decide to chose our flesh instead. thats when we sin.

Maybe. I don't disagree with much of what she says but she has to stop seeing 'self righteousness' behind every mention of works.

The only people that does that is you, imagining we see this self righteous thingy every time people mention works.

That's not true, That's your imagination.

How did he subjugate it?
By doing what Jesus said,

Seek after the things of the spirit NOT TH FLESH

Learn to LOVE OTHERS. and LET GOD TAKE CARE OF YOU.

Is our root (faith) in Christ, or is it in self.

Like Christ, Paul stopped trying to take care of himself and stopped worrying aboout all his probles, He started worrying about other people.

Thats how he did it. Thats how he considered all his sufferings a momentary light affliction.

They turned to God and trusted in him, And were saved, and out of the salvation, in their new creation and their new power. they did works.

Somewhere in my posts I said we nurture the fruit of the Spirit in us by turning away from the loves of the world and seeking God in the study of God's word and praising and worshiping him.

The key for me was just knowing that's what it's all about. Having godly character according to the fruit of the Spirit is what the Christian life is all about.

You can teach all the classes you want. You can attend all the church services you want. You can serve in all the church programs you want. You can evangelize all the people you want. Those things are great, but they will not bring you into the obedience of the Spirit. The only thing that will get you from here to there is having the fruit of the Spirit growing and flourishing in your heart. Make that your goal in all your reading and studying and worshiping and you will have what you need to live the pleasing life God has commanded us to live.

It's ALL about having the fruit of the Spirit.

One of my life verses:

"for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking (the practices of 'religion'), but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit."-Romans 14:17

If this means you need to get out of the cold dead church you're in, then so be it! Get around people who are alive in the Spirit and thriving and who teach others how to be alive. Cold dead liturgy won't get you there. Vibrant fellowship in the Holy Spirit through Bible study and praise and worship and honest open fellowship will.

Obedience is about putting the needs of others above your own needs. It is about trusting God to take care of your needs, So no matter how bad things get, you will still serve others, and not self. It is about working out our salvation, and taking that which is within us and producing fruit as it goes out from us (the power of God) it is not worrying about this life, because you KNOW this life is but short lived, and ETERNITY is forver, so in context. this life is nothing compared to eternity. so nothing can hurt you, even if it kills your (your secure in Christ, and in salvation. )

There's nothing wrong with asking what I can, and should, do. In fact, we are counseled to find out what pleases the Lord, and to know what his will is-Ephesians 5:10,17.

From there the right question to ask is 'how can I do it?'. That is actually what Christians struggle with. They don't know how to do what God wants them to do. The life changing answer to that question for me was have the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit in you. It is the fruit of the Spirit inside of us that makes it possible to do what God commands. That is what walking in and by the Spirit means.

It's actually quite simple: Kind people do kind things. Patient people are patient. Loving people are loving towards others. Peaceful people are peacemakers. And so on. Nurture the fruit of the Spirit in your heart through communion with God, through reading his word and praise and worship, and a rejection of the things of the world, and you will have the qualities/fruits of the Spirit working and growing in you to do his will.

It's that 'clean the inside of the cup first' thing that Christ talked about. Be clean on the inside first by having the fruit of the Spirit (peace, patience, kindness, love, etc.) growing and welling up in your heart, then you will find the strength and the faith and the will and the determination to do what pleases God. You will be walking in the Spirit, not the flesh.

That's how you walk in the Spirit-obey the impulse of the fruit of the Spirit working in your heart. Get the impulse of the fruit of the Spirit in your heart by devoting your life to seeking him in the word and in praise and worship and a turning away from the loves and ways of the world.

Yes., all true. But what I'm learning to focus on is we cannot put new wine into old wine skins. The new and living way is about the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus setting us free from the law of sin and death. Rom.8:2 That is done via our new man created after the image of Christ.

One can't co exist with the other. They are opposed to one another. We can only defeat the flesh when we are walking in the Spirit (or new man)

Not by laws, Not by rules. Not by religion, Not by focusing on self. Not by working out a performance based system.

By TRUSTING IN GOD.

Have peace in you. Have self control in you. Have forgiveness in you. Have compassion in you (that's the biggee). Have joy in you. Have patience in you. Etc.

When you have this power in you, you will have the energy and motivation and all you need to then do righteous works of obedience and service for God.

Get the power of these qualities of the Spirit in you through Bible study, fellowship, and praise and worship, and a turning away from the loves of the world. And lose the cold dead liturgy. It's worthless toward changing the heart.

The only way I know is to rebuke them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost and ask God to take them away.

In my opinion it's not a sin to have a thought cross our mind, but it becomes a sin when we dwell on them.
