So, if someone believes, they are not saved?

The Lord tells us in His word there are 3 parts to believing in Him, and not one.

Come to Him, hear what He says, and then do what He said......You can not have one without the other to have true belief.

Ezekiel 18 IS SPEAKING OF THE OLD COVENANT, Ezekiel 36, THE NEW.
A mirror image of the law being placed on someones mind under the new covenant, and placed on their heart so they would want to obey

Same thing.

One in the NT makes themselves a new heart and spirit ("saves themselves" Acts 2:40; 1 Tim 4:16; etc) through obedience to God in belief, repentance confession and baptism. So in that sense does man save himself by complying to God's commands whereby God will create a new heart and spirit within man.

How many obedient works must you do to be assured you are saved? What is the figure? If you do not know the answer you can have no assurance before God on this earth can you. You may not have done enough good works to be saved
One must do the works of believing, Jn 8:24; repentance, Lk 13:3,5; confession, Mt 10:32,33 be baptized for remission of sins, Acts 2:38 becoming a Christian then the Christian must continue to faithfully walk in the light, 1 Jn 1:7.

One either obeys or disobeys the will of God..no inbetween.

If one does not have to obey to be saved (Heb 5:9), then how many acts of disobedience must one do to be saved?

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[SUP][a][/SUP]”
[SUP]4 [/SUP]“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
[SUP]5 [/SUP]Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. [SUP]6 [/SUP]Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[SUP][b][/SUP] gives birth to spirit.[SUP]7 [/SUP]You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[SUP][c][/SUP] must be born again.’ [SUP]8 [/SUP]The wind blows wherever it pleases. Cornelius
and his family heard peter preach, they believed what he heard and immediately the Holy Spirit descended on them and they spoke in tongues as the disciples did at the day of Pentecost. THEN they were baptised

In your view, can an unsaved person be filled with the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues?

The new birth is baptism, one must obey by being baptized and those that do are in that sense "saving themselves" as in Acts 2:38-40. Those that obey Peter's commands to repent and be baptized are in that sense saving themselves and God will create a new heart and spirit within them.

obedience COMES FROM FAITH (rOM 1:5)

You desire obedience because you have been born again of the Holy Spirit you have been changed into someone who in your heart wants to obey God. If you are not under a law of righteousness before God Jesus must have died for all your sins at Calvary, past, present and future. When you know that in your heart, sin starts to lose its power over you:

For sin shall not be your master, for you are not under law but under grace Rom 6:14

The HS falling upon Cornelius had nothing to do with his personal salvation. It was water baptism that was commanded to Cornelius, verse 47.48 and that command alone made water baptism necessary.

In the context;
1) God sent an angel to Cornelius to tell him to send for Peter
2) God gave Peter a vision telling Peter the Gentiles were "clean"
3) God baptized the Gentiles with the HS.

God did these things to prove to the Jews that salvation was not meant for the Jews only but also for the Gentiles.
In Acts 11:4-14 Peter told the Jews in Jerusalem about these things God did and the result was " When they (Jews) heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life." Acts 11:18 So baptism with the HS was what God used to prove to the Jews that salvation was not just meant for the Jews only but also for the Gentiles and it had nothing to do with Cornelius' personal salvation.

In Acts 15:11 Peter said Jews and Gentiles are "saved in like manner". The "like manner way" the Jews in Acts 2:38 and Gentiles in Acts 10:47,48 were saved was water baptism in the name of the Lord for remission of sins, not baptism with the HS.

Since God was proving to the Jews that salvation was not for them only but also for the Gentiles, that is why Peter said "
Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days."

Forbidding water baptism to the Gentiles would have gone against God's will in salvation being brought to the Gentiles. Thereby the Gentiles salvation was through water baptism and no Jew was to forbid that from happening lest they find themselves fighting against God's will.

1 Sam 19:20ff Saul and his messengers were not saved men but the spirit of God came upon them and they prophesied.

Faith is obedience.

One cannot have faith only with no obedience and be saved by that faith only.

Rom 1:5 "obedience to the faith"
"The faith" refers to the NT system of faith, the body of information contained inthe NT and one must have obedience to that NT system of faith.

Rom 6:16 Paul goes on to say you serve either one of two masters, you serve either;

1) sin unto death

or

2) obedience unto righteousness

What verse says being baptized with the HS saves/remits sins?
Water baptism does save/remit sins though, Acts 2:38.

Eph 2:5----grace>>>>>>>>>>>saves
Jn 3:16----belief>>>>>>>>>>>>saves
Lk 13:3---repenting>>>>>>>>>saves
mt 10:33--confession>>>>>>>>saves
1Pet3:21 baptism>>>>>>>>>>saves

One way to be saved then grace INCLUDES belief repentance confession and baptism

Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from[SUP][c][/SUP] faith for his name’s sake. Rom 1:5

Come to Jesus today, from your heart recognize that you are a sinner in need of salvation, ask Jesus to come into your heart and save you from your sin. If you ask Him with a sincere and trustful heart He will save you.
Hello, Richie. Can you point me to the verses which tell us that we are saved by asking Jesus into our hearts?

Yes, this is exactly what happened to Cornelius and his house, there is no recording in the bible of anyone ever being placed into a saved state by baptism of the Holy Spirit, and why Peter commanded they be water baptized in Acts 10:47-48, there is only one baptism that is commanded for salvation Eph. 4:5, the one the apostles were commissioned to do Matt. 28:19-20

I find it strange that water baptism is considered more significant than the Holy Spirit coming upon someone. I have not said a person being filled with the Holy Spirit as the disciples were at Pentecost brings salvation. However, the definition of a Christian is someone in whom the Holy Spirit resides(Rom 8:9)

If you believe water baptism is necessary for salvation, the example of Cornelius would show a person who is unsaved, and in a condemned state can be filled with the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues as the disciples did at Pentecost. That doesn't seem right to me, but I acknowledge we all see things differently
