The word convict has the primary meaning of convince or persuade; hence our convictions are our most firmly held beliefs.

Only in a judicial sense does convict mean find guilty.

And that is why we must "repent/change" from our most highly held personal beliefs and instead agree with what God says. When we do this., we are encouraged to be learning how the truth sets us free. How there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. And the Holy Spirit reminds us by convicting us of our true identity in Christ that we are indeed righteous. We are holy and without blame before Him in love. Amen!

Now when we believers read about conviction., it is a positive and good and wonderful thing because in John 16:8-12 Jesus describes how conviction works now for the believer and the lost person. So important to have our minds changed in relation to how we read the Word. We are no longer condemned. This is not a JP truth., this is a Biblical-Jesus truth that many Christians have learned about and have shared even here on CC.

I took this from an article written by P. Ellis about how the Holy Spirit convicts the believer using John 16:8- This is for you especially Sevenseas. It is especially good news for us believers. We are no longer getting clobbered over the head by the old schoolmaster "law". We have the Holy Spirit. Thank You Jesus.

People say they were convicted of sin while reading the law and that this caused them to run to God in repentance. These experiences testify to the true ministry of the law—it helps us recognize sin and our need for grace. But the law is not the Holy Spirit and the Spirit of Grace does not minister law to you.

The ministry that brought death, … was engraved in letters on stone… If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! (2 Cor 3:7-9)
Look into the mirror of the law and you will feel condemned, every time. That’s what the law does. It points out your faults and failings. But that is not what the Holy Spirit does. That is not the more glorious ministry that brings righteousness.
When you sin it takes no faith to look into the mirror of the law and agree that you made a mess. It takes faith to listen to the Holy Spirit and agree that in Christ you are as righteous and holy as he is! This is the good news that turns sinners into saints. This is the startling revelation that empowers you to go and sin no more.
The Bible says we are not under law, but grace. This means we do not need the law to teach us how to live. But without the firm rule of the law, how will we please the Lord? How will the Holy Spirit set us on the straight and narrow? Or to use a recent example I read on Charisma News, how will we know it’s a bad idea to steal from Walmart?
How does the Spirit of grace convict us?
A law-conscious preacher defines conviction (elegcho in John 16:8) as fault-finding and rebuke. But an interpretation of conviction which is more consistent with the Holy Spirit’s gracious character is expose, or bring into the light. (More here.)

How does the Holy Spirit convict us? He does it by turning on the lights, not to shame you (Jesus carried your shame), but to show you the way to life. Ian Thomas describes it like this:
The Holy Spirit is like a man with a lamp entering a dark and dirty room, and what you have learned to live with in the dark becomes repugnant in the light.
Think of Saul on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3). By his own account he was chief of sinners. Then the lights went on and he became a different man.
I have written elsewhere about the need for a new covenant definition of conviction, one that does not emphasize your badness but God’s goodness and grace.
But the simple fact is the Holy Spirit will never convict you of your sin. When you sin, your conscience may condemn you, the law will condemn you, the judge and jury may condemn you, the religious may condemn you, and the devil will certainly condemn you, but against the chorus of condemners stands the sweet Holy Spirit who defends you and draws you to grace.
The Holy Spirit’s conviction has nothing to do with your sin and everything to do with God’s grace. It’s not about the bad thing you’ve done but the good thing he wants to do in you right now.

This is truly a beautiful thing for us to behold as believers!! Our whole life has been changed into something new. And now we learn just how much we are different than the world and the way we used to be.,,our old manner of life. We are the sheep of His pasture now. We are loved and we are dealt with IN Christ.

Hi joaniemarie...Your post here is so true...I truly had my faith tested three nights ago when I was rushed to hospital with blue lights all the way...I have SVT and my heart went out of sync, 205 beats per min, as I was laying in the ambulance I could feel my hands going numb and I was becoming cold due to lack of oxygen, the devil was having fun putting the worst fears on top of my own fears, but then I just kept calling on the name of our Lord Jesus, and before I knew it my mind was totally flooded with His peace, my body was doing one thing while my mind was fixed on our Lord:). I had no panic whatsoever and Scripture was just rolling in my mind, God telling me to be still, Jesus reminding me that He is with me right here right now, then half way to the hospital the ambulance jumped up and told the driver to pull over, he could not believe what happened, my heart had jumped back into sync and ALL my stats went straight back to normal, by the time I got to hospital I was well enough to get of the trolley and use the toilet...I told the ambulance man that there is power in the name of Jesus, and know for sure that the peace off the Lord was with me, I love Him so much it brings tears to my eyes...Praise God...\o/...xox...

Oh Rosemary that is sooooo AWESOME!!!! Jesus is REAL and with us in the HERE and NOW of our lives. How can we learn to trust Him unless He shows up in our lives TODAY!!!??? I've experienced what you are talking about but not in the ambulance. I was in my car with totally bald tires on the snow.

Had no money and was just starting a job. The roads all of the sudden between 4 and 5p.m. became snowed and iced and people with 4 wheel drive vehicles were getting stuck on the side of the road. I got out of work early at 6:00 and it was dark dark. The hills and back roads to travel were not plowed a 2nd time and the snow was still coming down so it was hard to see as the head lights made the snow flakes glare.

I remember praying "Lord you got me this job and you allowed me to still have this car so I'm trusting You to get me through even though it's going to be a miracle! Lord I can see with my eyes all these well maintained cars getting stuck at the middle of the icy hills and even at the bottom of the hills unable to go any further. But You know I have no one to call to come get me. I'm alone without human help again Lord and You well know this. I'm trusting You to get me through Jesus."

Seriously Rosemary.,,, that car went up the hills and down the hills and it is my belief the angels were carrying that old car themselves because I got home safely while other cars were stranded. My tires were bald and my car was a rear wheel powered vehicle and I'd never driven one of those before in the winter.

The feeling of flying over the snow and being taken care of by Jesus was overwhelming. The JOY and peace I felt has sustained me through many other trials. But I still need to have Him do more miracles because of my humanness because we forget so easily. Our brains are just flesh and blood. I'm so glad we are being transformed in that area!! Thanks for sharing what Jesus did for you Rosemary.

We miss power and authority in the Kingdom because often we speak in unbelief.
Jesus could not have meant ....... because it is too hard, or we continually fail.

Before Jesus came and died, knowing God was still the same through faith and obedience.

What Jesus brought was the Holy of hollies came and dwelt in our hearts.
Before the kingdom was external, not filled with the Holy Spirit or the spiritual gifts, not
us being one with God. Communion was via the temple and priests and sacrifices.

Now it is with our prayers, and praise and worship.
In order for man to be In right standing to GOD ,man would have to have faith In the WORD of GOD and there was no other way,so then It's always been grace through faith.

Without the grace of GOD,man would have to be righteous In their own strength and no man would be able to be perfect according to the Spirit because of the weakness of the flesh and they would be brought Into captivity to the law of sin and since GOD would only accept perfection, all men would come short of GOD's perfect standard of righteousness.

Only the obedient are granted grace. Some people say "Well that's earning it." But it's not. Nothing we can do can earn it. Let me give you an example...
I would think it would be difficult for dead men to work. God must do the first work or no man could please him.

Its Christ's bank account the rewarded of His work of faith. He earned all of it according to His three day labor of love. . and gives one penny to each no matter how many times they come to His bank account and receive the reward of His work (grace) . He used one penny to represent eternal life.

I go to the bank and say "I washed my dishes and swept my floor, so please give me a penny toward the price of a mansion, and I will keep going back to my house to do things to earn more pennies." And they say "I'm sorry, that just does not earn anything, and even if it could, pennies are not even in the ballpark of enough for a mansion."
Can’t earn a free gift.freely he gave freely we have received....not will receive if we are obedient.

But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Mat 20:10

Ask yourself how many pennies does it take to inherit eternal life?

I usually use the KJV; but you used the word convict in that verse and the KJV uses reprove. I searched for a translation that uses the word convict so we could discuss the same text.

no matter

either way, the concensus is not the conclusion of prince

I had no idea why you used the ESV...it does read differently, but we know how translations are

you didn't say very much about it, other than you appeared to disagree with the primary meaning of the word convict

the meaning is the same in the text, I don't think wording it a little differently changes anything...anyway

thanks

The Word says the Holy Spirit was sent as a comforter to those who are saved and was sent to convict the world of it's sin. Might be good to remember that we who are saved are not of this world though we are for a short time visitors to it.
As to Prince, while I have not read anything of his other than what is posted here I notice that no matter what well known pastor/evangelist is quoted here someone will be quick to attack them. How sad yet telling it is that in this age of information overload we will spend more time attacking those doing kingdom work than we will actually doing that work ourselves.

And that is further clarified in John 16:10

Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

What did the Lord mean by this?

1. Christ was numbered with the transgressors and crucified as a common criminal. But His resurrection proved that He was indeed the Righteous One and therefore He went to sit at the right hand of the Father after His ascension.

2. When a sinner hears the true Gospel, he must hear that Christ died for his sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried [entombed], and that He rose again the third day for the sinner's justification. Thus the Holy Spirit will further convict the sinner that unless he is justified by grace through faith in the Righteous One and what He accomplished at Calvary, he will be condemned to Hell.

3. The Lord further said "because ye see me no more". Which means that the sinner must receive Christ -- though invisible -- by faith as both Lord and Savior. Without that faith he will not be saved. When Peter preached to the Jews on the Day of Pentecost, he declared that God had made that same Jesus whom they crucified BOTH Lord and Christ. And because they were convicted of their sins, the Bible says that "they were pricked in their hearts" and immediately asked Peter what they must do. So this must be the response of the convicted sinner who hears the true Gospel (or reads the true Gospel in Scripture).

Joseph Prince treats Gospel truth in a cavalier fashion, and makes up things which should not be said by a genuine preacher of the Word.

right

the intent of v.8 is the work of the Holy Spirit convicting the world of righteousness

it cannot be seen any other way

people do not understand how to contextually read a passage a verse pops out at them and you end up with misinterpretations such as this

the Bible is plain on the deception and doctrines of demons that will and do creep in

and sadly, the itching ears to go along with these things

this is the real thing!

there is no explanation except that Jesus gave His perfect peace as He promises to those who are His

Christians should be sad that men claiming to preach the Gospel are actually perverting the Gospel. That should be even more disturbing than exposing their false doctrines. The apostles had no issues with exposing false teachers since they were called wolves in sheep's clothing. And there is also a curse on any "gospel" other than the true Gospel of God.

When a man undertakes to present himself as a preacher of the Gospel, he has a moral and spiritual obligation to preach the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Which means he will not be popular. Jesus said that those who become popular and receive the praises of men do not seek the praise of God. And those who seek to fleece the flock make merchandise of the Gospel.

Again sir, I have seen every single well know pastor/evangelist mentioned here attacked from Billy Graham to Macarthur to Meyers to absolutely anyone. Someone out there will not agree with their theology and will attack. This does nothing to edify God and just as when people disagree with each other and resort to personal attacks it makes the Christian community as a whole look bad. The apostles often disagreed with each other especially Peter and Paul but they confronted one another in person instead of in public because they realized the bigger picture was the winning of souls and not proving they knew more greek or hebrew or law than the other guy. The only difference between manipulation and ministry is motivation and without knowing any of these pastors/evangelist's motives to attack them because they are popular is contrary to making disciples of all men.

actually, what is sad is people not being familiar enough with the transcript from God that they follow false teachers

that is not only sad, but dangerous

can you point out where in scripture we are told the Holy Spirit convicts of righteousness?

we just covered the bases on that one, so don't copy/paste what prince says, cause that has been proven bogus

so you can remain in error or take correction...that goes for all of us. I've been corrected on many things over the years and I have reached the conclusion that no one has it 100% right but there are most definitely very egregious errors being taught and some are actually heretical

complaining about people who point out these errors is sad. you should be glad some of us are actually able to do so

... to attack them because they are popular is contrary to making disciples of all men.
I agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment. To attack any Christians merely because they are POPULAR is wrong. But that is not why false teaching is being exposed. The actual statements and teachings of men (as well as their associations) are to be examined in light of Scripture. If they conform to Scripture, well and good, and nobody in their right mind would attack them. However, when they deviate from Gospel truth and Bible truth, we have a moral and spiritual obligation to expose false teaching and juxtapose true teaching.

Let's take the example of Billy Graham. He was at one time a fundamentalist preacher of the true Gospel. But later on he associated himself with Roman Catholic clergy publicly. How could he do that when the RCC preaches another "gospel" and has incorporated all kinds of paganism into its theology? Should Christians have simply stood by and applauded Billy Graham for betraying his trust? I will not post the link to these headlines but this is all factual information:

Billy Graham praises the pope, a man who allows himself to be called God

Billy Graham receives honorary degree from Catholic college

Billy Graham turns Catholic converts back to Catholic religion

Billy Graham thinks that infants can become Christian through baptism

Billy Graham let apostate Catholic Bishop bless new converts

Sad is getting banned and returning under a new name. Sad is belittling anyone who disagrees with you. Here are your scriptures...

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Notice Holy Spirit as comforter to believers.

John 16:5-11 5
But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6
But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:9
Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Seems to say the world of sin and of RIGHTEOUSNESS...

I do not copy and paste what anyone says as always I use scripture in theological discussions. As to being in error, well, I choose not to reply.

The sad thing for me about HG preachers like Prince, is aspects of what they share is very true.
If you share the truth but leave out sin resolution, but act as if it really has been resolved,
everything scripturally fits, because scripture assumes one no long is caught in sin.

This is why the discussion get so weird. Unless you show people are missing the spiritual
step of reality, they are saved but doomed to destruction, acting clean, but still slaves to sin,
rejoicing yet living a double life.

Jesus's words only work when love is actually flowing, when people are speaking from their
hearts and they have faced who they are and worked through their issues.

But literally the teaching given from these groups is that is evil, works salvation, dooming people
to hell, and the cause for the failure of the church from legalists, the most evil people in the
world.

I do not know of a better description of easy believism, rejoice in Christ, resolve nothing, and
sort out your conscience that is telling you you are a sinner, but actually it is satan lying
because God has sorted it all out, and what you are actually doing is irrelevant.

Better description of this kind of faith is dead men walking.

why am I not surprised

you simply repeat the verse that has been shown to mean otherwise than what Prince states

has someone said you copy and paste? maybe the banned person you seem to think I am but certainly not me

in fact maybe your entire attitude here is because you think I have been banned

that would not be a true statement, so I guess I will have to understand that you appear to have some misguided dislike of me because you think I am someone that I am not

you and Prince disagree with every commentary, every REAL theologian and every translation we have

maybe ask yourself how or why the Holy Spirit would convict the world of righteousness because Jesus is speaking of the world here and not believers

I have a distaste for the type of attack you have made here regarding your false accusation that I have been banned

I have seen that done to others here. it's typical of some people here that they assume things about others and then accuse them of it

it really should stop

Sad is getting banned and returning under a new name.

I know this is not the first time that I have addressed this issue (not necessarily for this particular user) in public forum and I'm sure it won't be the last.

If someone has cause to believe that a user has been banned and returned under a different nic they have every right to report it to Admin so that we can attempt to verify that suspicion. They DO NOT have the right to publicly smear that person's reputation with their suspicions.

If someone has been banned, their original profile will show "Banned" as the user title. In this case SevenSeas of her own free choice decided to leave CC for a time (original account deleted) and then chose to return.
