"Lord, 'Tis Not that I did Choose Thee"

by Josiah Conder, 1789-1855

1. Lord, 'tis not that I did choose Thee;
That, I know, could never be;
For this heart would still refuse Thee
Had Thy grace not chosen me.
Thou hast from the sin that stained me
Washed and cleansed and set me free
And unto this end ordained me,
That I ever live to Thee.

2. 'Twas Thy grace in Christ that called me,
Taught my darkened heart and mind;
Else the world had yet enthralled me,
To Thy heavenly glories blind.
Now my heart owns none above Thee;
For Thy grace alone I thirst,
Knowing well that, if I love Thee,
Thou, O Lord, didst love me first.

3. Praise the God of all creation;
Praise the Father's boundless love.
Praise the Lamb, our Expiation,
Priest and King enthroned above.
Praise the Spirit of salvation,
Him by whom our spirits live.
Undivided adoration
To the great Jehovah give.

John 15:16; Eph 2:8-9; 1 Peter 2:9-10; 1 John 4:10,19

Sound gospel is seasoned with grace and love that sinners become so moved that they get on their knees to pray and become converted and baptized in the Holy Spirit, backsliders are restored, and believers are edified. The sound sermon messages, by the power of the Holy Spirit, brings conviction upon the sinner, leaves people sure of their salvation and eternal destiny, and it does not come from ravenous wolves in sheep's attire whose aim is to caress people's heads while presenting messages laxly and through myopic lenses thereby leaving the congregation lukewarm and blind.

2 Cor 4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
2 Cor 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
Handling the word of God deceitfully causes spiritual stagnancy.
Unadulterated gospel message is certainly still around and hearing them brings joy to my heart.:)
Sometimes I wonder how the apostles presented the gospel that thousands of souls were added to the Kingdom of God [Acts 2:41-47; Acts 4:4, 31-37; Acts 10:44-48]. What led to such fruitfulness?

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.

When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand. :)

Our third born liked me to sing this, and "The Church's One Foundation"
when I rocked her to sleep when she was just a babe.
Such good taste!
She would reject any other lullaby, like "Rockabye Baby" till I sang these songs
She had heard them...we always kept our little ones with us in church,
and the Lord, even then, was working in her heart that she would know the Truth.
(and she does!)
Thank God! :)

awesome ellie.
even during the early reformation (before the peasants could read), but an example closer to our time, i heard of the sweetest testimony of a woman raised in Communist country who said her Grandma 'got around' it (no preaching) by singing the Hymns while doing her chores....it taught the little girl all about Jesus and the Gospel:)

your post brought to mind a conversation i had a few days ago with a sister.
she's bringing up her grandson (grade 2 now:)) to have faith in Jesus, whenever she can.
when he was a few months old, my sister was given an ultimatum by her own daughter - stop that religious stuff or you won't being seeing your grandson again.

though it crushed her beyond words, she stood firm in Christ, and agreed that if this was the decision, she would pray for her grandson - but would never foresake speaking about and worshipping and honoring the Lord in her own home.

she suffered in agony over the separation for 6 months.
then gradually he was allowed to visit, though the same conflict came up over and over.
when thanks was given over meals, there was anger and refusal.

long story short....that's all been healed (though the daughter is not yet a believer, i do have faith she will be:))

back to the conversation we had a few days ago: my sister told about some interactions with her grandson as he grows in his beautiful faith:

"Grandma, did The Lord make that deer also?" - "of course He did. He made everything"
"Grandma, my mom and dad don't believe in the Lord, but i do" - "i know you do. and you can teach them later"

a little family dinner at grandmas.....meal is served and time to give thanks....someone begins to eat:
grandson looking at grandma: "AHEM....grandma?....The Lord????":)

Aww...:)

How faithful is our God?
What lengths will He not go to to protect and provide for His own?

And how much does He love that child? ♥

Praise God for the faith and the faithfulness of that grandmother.
And may the Lord teach through that little one
what his mommy so desperately needs to know.

She had heard them...we always kept our little ones with us in church...
this is one of the things i like about my church also.
the kids go to their sunday school while we have adult bible study before the service.
but the kids are all present for the service.
i sit behind a family with 6 kids, ranging from newborn to about 10 (grandkids, etc).

the little ones squiggle:) and slide down the pews onto the floor; tap each other behind grandma's back; lay down - then stand up, etc - mom or dad or grandma or grandpa taps them or turns them to face the pastor during the sermon, and they do of course...as long as they can:D

but they are hearing everything.

when we pray The Lord's Prayer, there's one little fella (about 7) who snaps to, and man, can he recite it, with heart. there are some hymns he is learning (without knowing it, if you get my drift:)) and occasionally his attention comes back to the moment and out comes this beautiful singing.

i wouldn't change my seat for anything.
watching them is amazing.

I hope those parents know that. :)

We kept our children with us, too, unless we were teaching Sunday School,
which we did do for the sake of those who wanted it, to minister to their little ones,
and to them, too. (ps--it was a blast!)

But the fact that an eight month old would raise her head off my chest and shake 'no' at me till I sang "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" to her speaks volumes.
(lovely hymn by Edward Mote, btw...he and Fanny Crosby...♥)

We brought colored pencils, and Goldfish crackers ( ;) ), and little puzzles for the toddlers, but it didn't take long for them to know this was a place in which they behaved their very finest.

I don't think I'll ever know what impact it had on them, but I am so grateful to all the people who not only tolerated our children in church, but welcomed them. :)

And just a side note---I understand the reasons newer worship music is sung in churches today...but I feel regret for the ones who throw the old hymns aside.
They're just too beautiful to be forgotten. ♥

Here are some quotes I have regarding the Gospel.

"The Gospel is nothing but a sermon whose theme is Christ, declaring him to be the Savior, light and glory of all the world."
- Martin Luther, Complete Sermons of Martin Luther, Volume 1, Sunday After Christmas, pg 260

"The Gospel message embodies three distinct elements: an announcement, a command, and a call. It announces the good news of redemption accomplished in mercy; it commands all men everywhere to repent; and it calls all men to surrender to the terms of grace by believing on Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior."
- A.W. Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy, Chapter 4

"Human wisdom caters to self-will, intellectual and social pride, fleshly lusts, and the desire for independence from God. Human wisdom and the Gospel are therefore constitutionally incompatible. Try to combine the two, and the Apostle Paul says you render the Gospel null and void. The very reason people love sophisticated religion and highbrow morality is that those things appeal to the human ego. At the same time, worldly wisdom scoffs at the Gospel precisely because it confronts human conceit. The Gospel demands that people acknowledge their sin and spiritual impotence. It humiliates them, convicts them, and calls them sinners. Moreover, it offers salvation as a gracious work of God - not something people can accomplish on their own. In every way the Cross crushes human pride."
- John MacArthur, Ashamed of the Gospel - When The Church Becomes Like The World, Chapter 5, pg 111

"As there is only one God, so there can be only one Gospel. If God has really done something in Christ on which the salvation of the world depends, and if He has made it known, then it is a Christian duty to be intolerant of everything that ignores, denies, or explains it away. The man who perverts it is the worst enemy of God and men; and it is not bad temper or narrow mindedness in St. Paul which explains this vehement language, it is the jealously of God which has kindled in a soul redeemed by the death of Christ a corresponding jealously of the Savior... Intolerance like this is an essential element in the true religion; it has the instinct of self-preservation in it; the unforced and uncompromising defense of that on which the glory of God and the salvation of the world depends."
- James Denney, The Death of Christ, Chapter 3, pg 58-59

I pray that I have found grace in your sight, show me the way, that I may know you.

I have often wondered how I knew Jesus when I was so very little, my memories are filled with Jesus, how I talked to Him, loved Him, His presance.
He was my friend, always within me and beside me, always listening and loving me.
Was it because I was brought to church from my first days, and the gospel was heard in my small ears, and somehow known by my heart?
I often consider that Jesus spoke the gospel to me, translating it somehow, so I should know it.
One has to consider this, as too often, some churches ask that infants be kept in a separate area, or in child care.
I know only, that knowing Jesus , even before I could walk, saved me, not just in soul, but from the hardships that began before I was born in the home I was brought to.
Maby it was my mother's quiet prayers, heard by God and I , because I was within her, her love for Jesus heard by me in womb.

" Suffer not the children to come to me."

For it is the ears of the child that trully hear and embrace with joy the gospel.
I know I am greatful that , even though I do not know how I heard the gospel, that it was spoken so I did.
For it saved not just my soul, but my life and called me to love, even though all I knew then, tried to destroy it.

Thankyou Lord Jesus!

God bless

I woke up today singing
'the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases...
His mercies never come to an end.
They are new every morning,
new every morning,
great is Thy faithfulness, O, Lord...
great is Thy faithfulness.' (Lam. 3:22-23)

I call that Good News. :)

Luke 7
Messengers from John the Baptist

18The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, 19calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” 20And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’” 21In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. 22And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, leperse are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”

24When John’s messengers had gone, Jesusf began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. 26What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27This is he of whom it is written,

“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way before you.’

28I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29(When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just,g having been baptized with the baptism of John, 30but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

~

there's John the Baptist, who had seen everything! he saw the Spirit descend on Him like a dove!
the forerunner cried out from the wilderness...he baptized the Lord!
and yet, away he goes to Herod's cold, dark stone prison, on death row.

Matthew 14:3
For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife

old John wonders....was He really the One?
what happened? where is the Kingdom? where are the things Our God promised?
why i am here in prison about to be killed?
was He really the One?

~

Isaiah 35
The Ransomed Shall Return

1 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
2 it shall blossom abundantly
and rejoice with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.
They shall see the glory of the LORD,
the majesty of our God.

3 Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
4 Say to those who have an anxious heart,
“Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God
will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He will come and save you.”

5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
For waters break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;
7 the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water;
in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down,
the grass shall become reeds and rushes.

Isaiah 61
The Year of the LORD’s Favor

1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;a
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;b
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor,
and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn;
3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.c
4 They shall build up the ancient ruins;
they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,

~

“And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, leperse are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. 23And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
