I believe I was baptized in the Holy Spirit at age 19 or 20, as I said earlier. After that,I experienced much spiritual opposition and struggled immensely until age 22 when I completely submitted to the Lord and His will for me. He revisited me with a further anointing plus tingues in answer to my earnest orayer some 20 years after that. There is most definitely a huge difference between just being saved and being empowered.
what leads you to believe you were baptized in the holy spirit at 19 or 20? (this was after you had already been born-again for some time, I think you wrote earlier)
was it the speaking in tongues... or a feeling... or both?

Absolutely! Countless born again dear sisters and brothers in Christ have not experienced or even known about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. That doesn't make them not saved or even second-class citizens of heaven, as some people think.

The baptism serves to anoint and empower the believer so that as he does the will of God, he will have more ease and success and less striving.
then there members of the body who are baptized and empowered by the holy spirit, and some who are not...

in my experience, this leads to thinking of two layers, or tiers, in the body of Christ... thus promoting division.

in place of that, I like the idea that by one spirit we were all baptized into one body.

The “baptism of the Spirit” refers to being equipped or empowered by God’s Spirit to carry out the task that Jesus has given the church.
then, if some christians are not baptized by the holy spirit, this would lead to a large gulf within the one body between the christians who are equipped and empowered and those who are not.

Ah! Yes, I know exactly what you're talking about!

My mom is from the holiness movement (and after I got save, that's definitely the direction God pulled me). I believe very strongly that anyone who gets saved receives the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, but that the baptism of the Spirit, sometimes called "sanctification" or "Christian perfection" (notice, not "absolute perfection"!) or "heart holiness/purity," is a second work of grace after you first get saved in which God removes the pull to sin from your life. Like salvation, it's not written in granite -- you can still backslide -- but it brings your will into harmony with God's in a way that it wasn't before, so that your heart isn't pulled in two different directions like it was before. While this is always characterized by perfect love and the fruits of the Spirit, I do not necessarily believe that this work is instantly accompanied by gifts of the Spirit. The fullness of the Spirit, and the fruits of the Spirit -- with gifts being given as God chooses to bestow them, according to the individual's trustworthiness, faith, character, and the circumstances surrounding them.

My extremely brief experience with "speaking in tongues" in the popular form it takes to day was of zero benefit to me, and undoubtedly would have gotten me in a great deal of trouble had I continued in it. Nor has being in the presence of someone "speaking in tongues" ever proved of personal benefit.

I agree strongly that a great number of "tongues"-speaking churches seem to take an unholy pride in this, what they consider to be a gift, and sometimes treat other Christians unfairly or condescendingly because of it. I've met a number of nice people from that movement... but so often there was something that just seemed to be a little... off.
yes, sounds like we've had many similar experiences

(just to clarify, I think a person is baptized by the holy spirit when they become members of the body of Christ)

The Lord is working to build His Church today in the very same ways He has always worked. Nothing has changed, norcwill it until the Lord calls for her, His spotless Bride!
I think there are times and seasons...

note how differently Hezekiah deals with foreign invaders, compared to David.

The baptism in water and the baptism in the Holy Spiri---the baptism of fire---are both part of the baptism of Jesus Christ. One can be of the Body of Christ without any of them, although the baptism in water is a command for us.
one can be part of the Body of Christ without being baptized by Jesus? are there any more parts to the baptism of Jesus?

I personally hold that baptism of the Holy Ghost comes after you've been saved... You receive the Holy Ghost and His presence when you are saved, but the "enduing with power from on high" comes next. Those who were gathered together at Pentecost were already converts and believers, and some of them had already performed miracles in Jesus name -- yet they weren't baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire until the day of Pentecost. Of course, if you call the second work of grace by another name (such as "holiness," "heart purity," etc.), then it's semantics come into play.

When we receive salvation, we are immediately adopted into the family of God. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a blessing that we can enter into. It's your choice. As for me, I don't want to leave this earth not having received all that God has for me.

Why should there be a gulf between believers? Jesus is our Lord and Saviour. God is our Father. We are brothers and sisters. Everyone has been given ability in Him, but when you avail yourself of what He has for you---clearly in scripture---then you can do all He calls you to with greater ease, success and fruit, without the striving we see people doing that leads to burnout.

I am crazy about all my brothers and sisters who have not experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but because I know what that's like, I will encourage them when given the opportunity. Who wouldn't, when they have a great thing? We are supposed to be encouraging each other in the Lord.

For me, I received other gifts beside tongues, but it is tongues that is readily observable.

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 (NASB)
[SUP]14 [/SUP] For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
[SUP]15 [/SUP] What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.

Our prayer language that the Lord gives us to speak in the spirit to Him..is one we activate with our "will"..I will pray with my spirit..I will sing with the spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:2 (NASB)
[SUP]2 [/SUP] For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in his spirit he speaks mysteries.

This is a major blessing from our Lord to us!

Wrong. Your rejecting the Truth according to scripture, which proves to me you do not even have the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also the Spirit of Truth and you are speaking contrary to the Truth. No one with the Holy Spirit would have said what you just said above because it is a lie.

Again scripture shows your error....

Again....1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Romans 8:9 "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

The Lord chooses whom He will anoint of His Spirit, not men. Again, you have proven yourself reprobate by speaking lies.

1 John 2:27 (NASB)
[SUP]27 [/SUP] As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

my take on people being baptized by the holy spirit on the day of pentecost is that the spirit had not yet been sent... but now, the spirit baptizes when the person believes.

the book of acts talks about some things that are done differently today... the people in samaria don't receive the holy spirit until Peter and John lay their hands on them... but today, we don't expect apostles to come and lay hands...

today when we have a serious question, we search the scriptures... back then, they searched and also convened the apostles who made the decision.

you are saying that a person can be part of the body of Christ without having been baptized by Jesus?

if so, I disagree... I go with the idea of that's how we gain entrance into the body of Christ, by being baptized by the one spirit.

Neglecting water baptism, while commanded for the believer, doesn't keep people out of the family of God. Note well that only believers are commanded to be baptized, which means they have received salvation already. you cannot be saved by water, but the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin through our faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour.

You lie here more than once.

Holy Spirit desires to anoint every believer. However, believers need to submit to Him in order to experience His in-filling, His baptism. If one is not willing, He will not do it.

There is nothing reprobate about me. That you would accuse someone so easily reveals a very critical spirit within you. You do not have discernment, that's for sure. You are just ugly, today.

Actually, you are believing and spreading lies, here. You do not fully understand the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Join the ranks.

All Christians have the indwelling Holy Spirit, but He wants to fill us to overflowing with His power and anointing. Countless Christians do not walk in His power and anointing. They are just happy to have their "fire insurance". Many are great teachers and leaders and workers for the Lord, but they find themselves striving and striving. Holy Spirit's baptism helps the believer wade through His calling like a hot knife through butter.

More success with doing Gods will?
