Mormons worship a different Christ than we do.

Here is a fairly objective look at their history and beliefs.

BBC - Religion: Mormonism

The most telling thing about Mormons perhaps is this:

Mormons believe that:

  • God is an exalted, perfected man
  • God has a physical body
  • There is more than one God
  • Human beings have the potential to become like God
  • The Godhead consists of 3 separate and distinct beings, united in purpose
They believe that God the Father is the all powerful and all knowing supreme being.
Mormons believe that God is immortal and that God was once a man."I think this alone means they are not Christians, as this radically departs from what the Bible reveals about God.

They also believe in salvation through Christ, and BY WORKS!!

Mormons believe that human beings get salvation both through the grace of God and their own actions.Part of the work of salvation has been done by the atonement of Jesus Christ, in that all human beings are guaranteed resurrection, but to attain the full quality of eternal life, human beings also have work to do.And finally, regarding Lucifer or the devil:

According to LDS doctrine, the two oldest sons of God were Jesus and Lucifer. Lucifer convinced one-third of his brothers and sisters to join him in rebellion and were expelled from Heaven (see Gospel Principles, chapter 3). The other two-thirds became the humans born on our earth. This doctrine is mainly drawn from Joseph Smith's revelations in the Book of Abraham and the Book of Moses in the Pearl of Great Price. According to Joseph Smith, Moses recorded:LDS Teaching on Lucifer

I have met many Mormans and they are usually kind, loving and caring people. They also really take care of their own. However, their beliefs and doctrines differ significantly from Christianity, probably because they use Joseph Smith's book, The Book of Mormon" which does not agree in many places with the Bible.

it was easy in the beginning,,,,,,when the person who confessed that the lord was come in the flesh and was crucified,,,"they were christian",,,,,,,then we called our selves "a name",,,,we said "i am of Paul",,"i am of Apollos",,,,,"i am of Cepheus",,,,then "particular",,,"then catholic",,,then we nailed the verdict to the door,,,then we had other names we lived.

we were baptist,we were church of Christ,Methodist,seventh day Adventist,,,Pentecostals,,,Jehovah's witnesses,,we were,we said,,,,we were,we said,,,,,,,

we took and any of those who confessed that Christ had come in the flesh and was crucified to wash us in his blood,,,well we "excommunicated from the church",,,,then these excommunicated,,,,,excommunicated those who excommunicated them.

this is the rule of thumb,,,,,,,,any of the Christians who "drinking milk",,,,,do not understand "the whole truth",are at once taken out to the outskirts of town and their shoes removed,,,,and excommunicated from the christian body.

never, never, never,,,,,,,as the scripture saith "fellow-ship with the non believer",,,,,never, never, never eat the body of Christ with them who do not believe he is Christ. never, never, never drink the cup of the lords blood with those who do not believe in him crucified.,,,,,,,,,,

the day,,,,,,,,,,,the very day,,,,,you believed in Christ,,,,,,,,,you new less than the Mormons, less than any of the other denominations Ive mentioned,,,,,,,,,,"are you glad you were not "excommunicated on your second day",,,,,,the way we prove to cast away other Christians????????????? you understood less the first day you became christian,,,and the christian body was patient with you.

do not divide your house,,,,let the stronger support it,be patient.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,let's draw a fine line in the sand,,,,,,,,"all who confess the lord is come in the flesh and died on the cross for your sins,,,is christian",,,,,,,,,,,and begin from there to correct the smaller details,,,,,,,,"i am in the midst of loving you",,,,,,,all of you,,,,,,,

I've watched those Mormon shows and even though I do not agree with their religion, they try to be sincere in their walk like everyone else. Doesn't make them right, just makes them sincere.

whether or not mormons are christians depends on your definition of christianity...

to be accurate...if your definition of christianity rules out mormonism...it very likely also rules out the majority of methodists and lutherans and presbyterians...

Rachel, I know a lot of very sweet mormon people, so when I posted I was trying to be gentle about things.
The stark reality however, is that all of the doctrinal points in Angela's post are flawlessly accurate.

If you look through Angela's post, explaining points of mormon doctrine, I think you'll find a very different theological picture than what is adhered to by protestants.

I got a friend who ive known for awhile an shes always been a good christian then she started dating this guy who was a mormon and she converted to mormonism she says she is still christian but ive always heard other people talk of mormons as if it was w seprate religion that got started by some guy translating some old texy or something.
Advise her that she needs to study Mormonism deep before she even considers marrying this guy. I personally would never marry a Mormon. Their religion is based on Joseph Smith who claimed to have a vision where he saw God, Jesus, and Moses, I believe, which right there tells you he was a false prophet. No man can look on God and live. No man will see Christ again until every eye sees him. This Joseph Smith claimed he received special books from God that gave him a new revelation. No one saw these books other than Joseph Smith. Where's the other witness? There has to be two witnesses. Not to mention the fact, once again, that Joseph Smith was contradicting scriptures in his claim that he saw both God and Jesus in person. I see no point in going any further with that.

Agree.
You need to stick some books in her hands as soon as possible.
Once she marries this guy, she won't be able to get out.

That's the weirdest thing I've heard yet. Did you bother studying Mormonism before you made such a statement? There's no comparison in all this world between those denominations and Mormonism.

I know some Mormons myself, and they certainly try to be upright Christians. Unfortunately, most of them know next to nothing about their own denomination. They are grossly misinformed in that regard. I do believe salvation comes from our personal walk with God, however, I certainly wouldn't want to belong to a church where the founder was a false prophet. The man had to have known he was lying when he claimed he saw God the Father and Jesus Christ in the flesh, unless he was a schizophrenic, which I hardly think was the case. Therefore they have a liar for church elder. Would you want that?

i know what mormons believe...and i know that it is far from biblical christianity...

but i also know what many of the churches in the denominations i mentioned believe...and it is also far from biblical christianity... to be more specific i was referring to much of the united methodist church and evangelical lutheran church in america and presbyterian church USA...

for example...if rejecting the trinity is a disqualifying offense...then not only are mormons not christian...but neither are oneness pentecostals or most of the ELCA and PCUSA and united methodist church...

what many liberal protestant churches adhere to nowdays is likewise very different from traditional protestant doctrine...that is mainly what i was pointing out...

i have noticed that a lot of christians focus only on the obvious such as the mormons and jehovah's witnesses...while mostly turning a blind eye to equally heretical liberal protestant denominations...supposedly we still have to regard those as fellow 'christian' churches for some reason...

Matt,

First, all the mormons I know are very sweet people.
So you should treat them very kindly, and with respect.

Second, their beliefs are not considered orthodox by any orthodox denominations.

Third, none of them know anything about the masons, or secret societies. If anything they believe seems similar, the members know nothing about it, and will think you're crazy if you mention it.

Fourth, there are lots of orthodox books written about mormonism, explaining both their theology and history.
You should probably continue your reading.

Fifth, I'm sure there are some mormons who frequent CC. Even though I disagree with their theology, I recommend you be polite to them. They'll probably show up in this thread to defend their beliefs.
Hey EVEN SATAN can put up an act and present himself as an angel of the light, I wonder how Jesus would treat thse false preachers? Like he did with the Pharisee, and they were ALSO NICE PEOPLE... But Jesus called them what they really were...
Snakes, Dogs, hypocrates...

I also wnder if we can descern spirits, what side of the fence will the MORMON spirit be... HOLY SIDE, OR EVIL SIDE?

People only people who FOLLOW JESUS are Christians... AND TO WHAT DOES JESUS LEAD?

Jinx, according to God HIS PEOPLE do not TRY to walk in HIS WILL AND STATUDES, THEY DO WALK IN THEM, BECAUSE THEY HAVE HIS SPIRIT THAT MOVES THEM, and A NEW HEART THAT MAKES THEM WALK IN HIS WILL....

It is like GOD IN THEM walk in GOD'S WILL... They Try NOTHING, they WALK IN GOD'S WILL.

Well I guess you can count me out, if that's is the deciphering factor when determining my salvation, if it comes down to whether or not I believe in the Trinity doctrine. Jesus never said anything about having to believe God is involves a three in one Godhead. I realize there's a Father, a Son, and a Holy Ghost in scripture. But men invented the concept of a Trinity, a three-in-on Godhead. It's not that I don't believe this. It's that I don't think we know enough about what's going on in heaven to formulate such a belief. That doctrine was debated for many hundreds of years with people on all sides of the table. Christ asked us to believe on Him, and in His Father in heaven, and to keep His laws and commandments because we love Him. He didn't ask us to believe in the Trinity or any other man-made doctrine. What irks me most is when people insinuate, or even say straight out, that you must accept such concepts to be saved. Show me that in scripture. I want to see that said by Christ Himself.

I see that? I'll believe it. Zap.

the bible says 'you shall have no other gods'...a version of 'God' that doesn't agree with the theology taught in the bible would be having another god...

what beliefs -do- you think are actually required for a person to be christian?

What Christ said. Strictly that. To believe on Him, that He is the only Son of God and the only way to the Father. That if I love Him, I will keep His commandments. I don't see how wrong I can go with that.

And I just said that I don't believe the concept that you have to believe in a three-in-one Godhead is in the Bible. Otherwise, obviously, I'd believe it without question. I only leave this open so when and if, while on this earth, I do formulate some conclusion about this, I'll get it right, rather than settling for some man-made doctrine I'm not sure of.
