Arminianism and anti-cal process leads many to this: it all comes down to out of context Scripture being used as proof texts.
Arminianism?? You think people are giving these "pastors" their money in the hope of salvation?

I read about a king who was so rich it's hard to imagine. Other kings and queens would visit him and bring him exotic animals so often, he had a zoo that would make Michael Jackson's zoo look like a petting zoo in a barn. He had servants doing everything for him, but govern, and even had more wives than he could visit in three years -- one by one at night.

He took out the biggest trees in the entire area to make a building, and inside the building was so much gold, they even had gold grills to cook on.

Pathetically rich, right? Surely he could have done something better with the money than that. He should have given each of his citizens their own luxurious house. But he didn't. Filthy, disgustingly rich, right? Ridiculous, right?

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention his name.

Solomon.

(It really bothers me when even Christians envy rich people.)
Straw man. Who is envying rich people?

There is nothing wrong with being rich. Many men of God were rich. Abraham, Job, David, and many more.

It's how people acquire their wealth, and what they do with it that can be harmful.

Solomon started out humble before God, with a lot of potential. But his wealth and power got to him.

He made slaves of the Israelites he ruled. He tried to pay for part of the debt for building the temple by giving away some Israelite towns. He amassed horses from Egypt. He married pagan wives, who turned him away from God to the extent he built temples for pagan gods. He heavily taxed everything and everyone.

He wound up doing evil in the sight of the Lord (1 Kings 11:6).

I don't know if MacArthur qualifies as a prosperity preacher or not.

Two things I believe he is glaringly wrong about are his promotion of Calvinism and his teaching against the manifestations (AKA "gifts") of the Holy Spirit.
You are quite correct, MacArthur clearly teaches Calvinism. I have never heard him preach against manifestations of the Holy Spirit, just modern physical supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit.

A rather big difference.

There is no difference. I remember our discussions in the tongues threads. You are a cessationist (as is MacArthur). I'm not.

But that's for another thread.

The above says it all and paints a sad picture of you.

The record is clear, John MacArthur makes around 250K from his church. That is a well known fact.

As I said, your hatred for brothers is sad and you're filled with slander. For the record I love his book Charismatic Chaos and Strange Fire. I also agree with them both. They are well documented.

Anyhow, you better go take a look at yourself in 1 John about that hate for brothers thing you have going on.
It becomes more obvious who he really is....something about a couple being counselled and the circumstances of said counelling....both he and a past member seems to have mentioned the same event with minor variations in the verbiage......a coincedence that is very suspect

So does the fact that John MacArthur makes over $1 Million a year in just church salary make the calvies here puke, or do they give him a pass because he got it honestly and not by fleecing his flock.

MacArthur makes far too much money for a Pastor himself, so spare us all the calvie better than thou selective outrage.
246,868, a tad under 1 mill unless your offering the rest.

I dislike the prosperity gospel more than anyone and I do thank you for posting the story. I see where you are coming from, but MacArthur is completely over paid. Notice I said that was just his church Salary, MacArthur himself has said he would never release his own personal tax return and that is something many of the Prosperity con men have done. MacArthur said, yeah releasing them does not prove anything. Yes, John Mac it does, because it is obvious you have something to hide.
How do you figure? How much should such a pastor make, including his radio show.

Check page 7 buddy , In 2011 he made over $400K, the numbers climb up to over 1 Million as of last year.

What kind of bush league, childish bravado is this? Being this is a chat board, you have no clue what I have and others have done for Christ so just shut up already. Only a carnal and foolish mind would have the arrogance to post something so childish as this and expect us to quake in terror over the works of Holy Ghost blasphemer, John MacArthur.

I have one thing agaisnt John MacArthur, he is a blasphemer of the Holy Ghost. That is my opinion, which is rooted and grounded in scripture.

Yeah and another top rated sales man, Lee Iacocca, had a tremendous impact on select people groups as well, what exactly is your point?

This instant condemnation vomit only works on your own calvie peeps, not those of us that do not fall for your selective outrage games and then play into your hands when you resort to playing the childish victim, when the tables are turned on you and your false teachings. Go gag yourself over someone else.

If here were half the man of God you claim he is, he would give it all away and live by faith. I say that about ALL the other celebrity preachers as well.
Just like God did to Job, Abraham, Lot, Issac, Jacob, Daniel, Moses, David, and Solomon. Yay, yay that's the ticket. Let's not compare with the pesky ole Bible.

Just wanted to say there is nothing wrong with having money and a
nice house. It’s not money that’s the problem, it’s the love of money.

Abraham was well off, so was Solomon, so was Jacob, so was Job.

I would suggest though to be aware of pastors with big flashy rings and gold teeth. :p

The Prosperity Gospel is the lunatic fringe of evangelicals. But looks like the problem is not entirely one sided. Calvinist John MacArthur is also riding the gravy train, as many have pointed out.

In 2014, Tim Bayly did a blog on preachers and their compensation. A look at publicly availabletax returns for Grace To You Ministries uncovered some interesting information about this anti-prosperity preacher’s income:
2010 2011 John MacArthur’s Income
$47,000 $103,000 (108% one-year increase) 40 hrs p/week at Masters College
$222,000 $402,000 (81% one-year increase) 20 hrs p/week at Grace to You
Add to the above John MacArthur’s other personal income, speaker’s fees, etc.:
$200,000 $200,000 conservative estimate of Grace Community Church salary
$200,000 $200,000 conservative estimate of royalties
$669,000 $905,000 MACARTHUR’S TOTAL ANNUAL INCOME (projected)

And who knows (other than God) who else is involved in fleecing their flocks. But this is not a new phenomenon. God spoke through Ezekiel against these false shepherds.

Oddly enough wealth wasn’t Solomon’s downfall, it was women.
Maybe avoid wealth and women.

You should have been giving Paul and Timothy as examples. Paul actually supported himself so that he would not be a burden to other Christians. If the average Christian in MacArthur's church earns $50,000 while MacArthur the preacher makes $500, 000, do you see a problem (Q).

How do so many rationally thinking ppl get sucked into this 'another gospel' junk?

Because they are not regenerate and the flesh loves to be satisfied by the thought of the flesh having all the money to fulfill that root of all evil, "the love of money" If I can invest a dollar and get a 9 dollar increase with Jesus as the gaurantee of the return, with the idea of Jesus being the hippie God in the sky, that loves everyone and wants them all to be happy, my sinful flesh loves that type of gauranteed investment.

The bad part is these same people would not take that same offer as real if it did not have the Jesus gaurantee behind it, the flesh loves the gods that it makes up. Lots of these people unfortunately are uneducated, in need to money and un-regenerate so they fall for these ticklers of ears. They sway people with every wind and wave of doctrine, the beautiful part for those that are regenerate is we have the apostles, prophets, evangelist, pastors and teachers to build us up so that we can become mature in the Son of God.

Ephesians 4:11-16
“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”
