Yea that's what I said, a friend at work who is from the Philippines told me some folks bury the Balut for days to get it nice and rotten adds to the flavor. Ugggg

Not sure if the more it's rotten the more it's better statement is really true but any case, it doesn't look appetizing to me.

but that... is just disturbing

eating things that the Bible tells us not to eat can be related to 'witch-craft'
and their ceremonies...

How about this.

Ecclefechan tart. Pronounced ek-cul-fek-un

Sounds a bit like a drunk muttering under this breathe!

Scottish Ecclefechan tart
"Add a 50ml slug of whisky (Scotch, naturally, none of this Irish stuff, or – heavens forbid – a bourbon"
LOL

I imagine it would if based on superstition, or if people think it has
magical properties.

Then there is the travesty of animals been killed for powdered rhino horn
for example, or birds nest soup etc.

Head cheese- it's actually not THAT weird. It is a hog's head meat that has been boiled and made into a spread. It's also called souse. It's very good if you like pork. Bacony (in my opinion) and good on crackers. I guess head cheese is the ancestor of Spam. Head Cheese
