"Can I go..." "Can I have..." "Can I bring..." Can I..." Can I..." Can I..."

I don't know, can you? Why are you asking me what you're capable of? If you want permission, ask me if you MAY do something, not if you CAN!

It means if you eat the cake, you cant also have possession of it. It's gone.

Wait a minute, if this were true, then the expression would be the other way around. It would say ''You cant eat your cake and have it too''

No, that's truly what the expression means, but a lot of people misinterpret the phrase. You can google the expression's origins to validate it yourself, if you wish. The inverse form is clearer to understand, but the general idea is possession vs consumption/delaying gratification/opportunity cost.

When said to a shy person: "Just relax and be yourself!"

What if someone has not yet found themselves? And their nervous reactions and unleashed nervous behaviors gets in the way of their true self?

Their letting loose their guard could release these habits that just wind up misrepresenting who this person really is, giving a very false impression to the people who do not know them very well.

So their attempt to "be themselves" before they had "found themselves" could actually be less like themselves than when they decided to be shy....

I overcomplicate things, I know. :D

''If I were you, I would........'' No, if you were me, you would do exactly what I'm doing, because you would BE ME.

"Break a leg". What a great way to wish someone good luck!
"Slow and steady wins the race" as per the old fable. But a fast and steady animal would have beaten the hare and tortoise.
