I don't know where 'flogging' came from. I don't think that actual word is biblical for child discipline. At any rate, even though there are no specific examples of physical child discipline mentioned in the NT, the principle still applies.

Mentally sound parents would not 'torture' their children. They are disciplined out of love.

"My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction; for whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights." Proverbs 3.
God correcting has nothing to do with parents hitting kids ...

Jesus basically says 'it would be more beneficial for a person to tie a millstone round their necks and drown in the sea than to cause one of these little ones to stumble'. In other words, what good comes from hurting a child? There is no benefit whatsoever, unless your only goal is to force them into doing what you want them to do. Hitting doesn't teach anything except fear of the hand.

I would say hitting children is a stumbling block, considering that Jesus' wishes for people to be compassionate, merciful and forebearing for one another. Hitting teaches hitting.

Proverbs might give instruction during OT times, but as far as I'm aware Jesus is the one to listen to now.

Do you think this proverb is for Christians today or is it just OT

Proverbs 10

22 The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

Does it conflict with anything Jesus says? If so, then disregard it. If not, then take it on board.

New covenant - new instructions. Besides, this isn't an instruction, it's a message of hope. A message of hope from God is for anyone.

'It would be more benificial for them not to have known the way, than to know it and turn from it. These proverbs are true for those like this 'a dog returns to its vomit' and 'a washed pig returns to the mud'.

I know the passage. It's Peter speaking.

But we obviously disagree. How you raise is up to you.

But no-matter. You decide on how to raise your children.
Are you sayinf Peter does not know he is saying ?

Forty Minus One

Proverbs 13:24
Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.

Proverbs 19:18
Discipline your children, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to their death.

Proverbs 22:15
Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away.

Proverbs 23:14
Punish them with the rod and save them from death.

Deuteronomy 25:2
If the guilty person deserves to be beaten, the judge shall make them lie down and have them flogged in his presence with the number of lashes the crime deserves,

Deuteronomy 25:3
but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes. If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes.

2 Corinthians 11:24
Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one.

2 Corinthians 11:25
Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea,

The Gospel of Nicodemus, Formerly Called the Acts of Pontius Pilate 4:14
The Jews reply to Pilate, Our law saith, he shall be obliged to receive nine and thirty stripes, but if after this manner he shall blaspheme against the Lord, he shall be stoned.

Notice the NT verses are statements of victimization by the rod and the lash, yet the OT ones are statements of perpetrating the beatings.
Pilate also sanctioned lashes requested by the jews. The same man who sanctioned them for Jesus, requested by the jews.

I find that interesting.

The verse used is this; Proverbs 23:13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

It looks like beating is the issue here. Proverbs is also a book of wisdom, not a legality. Not ten commandments and certainly cultural. Maybe it was customary for people in that time to beat their kid. Now, I believe...and hope thats changed because this does not work. Jesus didnt beat anyone...tossed some chairs and tables but didnt beat the pharisees. He was beaten so we wouldnt have to be (right? ) I will not beat my kid. Never. I hope noone else would either, but if they do I hope someone catches and reports this. I hope the parents who beat their kids are thrown in jail. BEATING A CHILD IS NOT MORAL....

maybe the bible isnt moral....it does promote alot of violence all the way around....huh.

food for thought.
