It disturbs me when questions like this are presented. Satan likes to confuse and cast doubt.
This isn't a deep theological issue. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice that dealt with the sin issue once and for all. Now,
there are those people who think they will "find God" when they are ready to find God. I disagree.....simply because,Jesus said in John 6:44 "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them". God the Holy Spirit does the "drawing".
The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict of sin and show men their need of a savior. However, when we repent of our sins, we are praying to God the Father and asking Him to forgive us. Why? Because we believe that Jesus' death is the propitiation for those sins. God wouldn't forgive without the sacrifice and we wouldn't ask without conviction.
We need a Savior, Jesus Christ. We need the Holy Spirit to convince us of our lostness.
Now, there is one very important aspect of the Holy Spirit that enables us to continue in our experience. He, The Spirit, indwells us at regeneration. Praise God!!!
Romans 8:9 tells us "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His".
So, the Spirit convicts, draws, and if we respond appropriately, the Spirit indwells us. We need the Holy Spirit to enable us to "walk in the light".
