Hmmm, you think that Christ did not know how to apply the very Law He gave to Moses?
Deu 22:1 Thou shalt not see thy brother's ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt in any case bring them again unto thy brother.

Isn't it typical of following the letter and the reason Yeshua came to clarify? He says "it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath". He didn't say "it's lawful to do anything you'd like on the Sabbath."
He also says "Sabbath is made for man." It's made for man since day seven, the same then, the same in OT and the same in NT. But NT Christians, not Yeshua, give a new meaning to it.

Read also 1 Cor 10 then and particularly verse 13: No temptation[SUP] [/SUP]has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. I suggest you take your Bible and pray for the holy spirit and start in Genesis and read it through to Revelation

but yeah, i think the Lord has the final say about what is and is not acceptable, and though the Old Testament held merit during it's time, and still does... there was another Testament written called the New Testament,
and Jesus changed quite a bit around.
He healed people on Sabbath, ate without washing His hands first, and 'broke' a number of laws the pharisees couldn't stand seeing broken.
bottom line, it's Jesus... the Lord of all who has the final word, and He did away with many of the strict laws that were previously required by the Old Testament, including animal sacrifices... etc., the list goes on.
here in Matthew, he clearly states it is not a sin to eat without washing your hands first.
there are many other laws that changed because of His presence on the earth.
He was a living sacrifice, not so that we would do whatever we wanted... but so that we could live a life free of endless works and laws to abide by... because He paid the ultimate price.
why would He have done that, and said and did so many different things, seemingly or literally contrary to what the old laws were and what the pharisees were then teaching and grasping so tightly to ?
i'm sorry- i couldn't read all the responses, but it seems like what Jesus said would trump anything the pharisees were clinging to. it doesn't mean we disregard the Old Testament and all the rules and laws subject to God's people in it... it means we respect them, and keep them as we are able to... but in the end Christ rules and has the final say about what is important and what is not.

Of course you are. Pharisees obsessed over the letter like you do. You claimed that one cannot obey the spirit and also violate the letter. You asked me to provide an example where this could be possible, and I did. You even provided your own example that you said was better. So you have, in effect, acknowledged that obedience to the law is not dependent upon obedience to the letter.

We love God by obeying Commandments 1-4; we love our neighbor by obeying the remaining 6 Commandments.

And how do we love GOD? By keeping his commandments. And his commandments (all of them) are satisfied by loving others.

ROMANS 10:4= For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.==Christ became the end of the Law by virtue of what He did on earth through His sinless life and His sacrifice on the cross. So, the Law no longer has any bearing over us because its demands have been fully met in the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith in Christ who satisfied the righteous demands of the Law restores us into a pleasing relationship with God and keeps us there. No longer under the penalty of the Law, we now live under the law of grace in the love of God.
