A SAINT'S GUIDE TO SINNING LESS

Oh, I know. You read that title and immediately thought, "How self righteous and prideful" but no. This isn't coming from a place of moral superiority, but of identity. This is coming from a place of new birth. No where in scripture will you read the children of God being addressed as "Dear sinners" but you will see them be called saints. VVhy? For the very reason that identity carries with it a compulsion to fulfill itself. There is a saying, "If it barks like a dog, if it walks like a dog, then its a dog." The way you see yourself affects the way you carry yourself. So without further ado, who are you? If we align our identity with who God calls us [and has made us] to be we will walk as He has intended for us. Righteously.

Lets begin by reading a portion of Romans 6, even so take some time to read all of it to truly get the impact of you being set free from sin.

Romans 6 King James Version (KJV)

6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

VVhat do we gather from these verses? VVhat do they say about you? Let it form your identity and mindset. You are not a servant of sin, but dead to sin and alive unto God. Those things that held you, or do this moment are contrary to the truth. Have faith, believe God. You are set free from sin's dominion under grace.

Romans 6:14 King James Version (KJV)

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Grasp this truth and let it sink in. Come in agreement with God that you are born-again, made the righteousness of God in Christ, Jesus. You are no longer shackled to sin, but set free by God's grace. He doesn't condemn you for your sin. He loves you, and you are reconciled to Him. Forevermore. See yourself through God's eyes. VVho does God call you to be and who has He made you to be? Be just that. Its who you are. VVhen you sin you realize that isn't who you are. Your actions don't align with who you truly are. Recognizing who you are, according to God, will in part have an affect upon the amount of sin in your life. You are a saint, a child of God born-again, and dead to sin. Set free to walk in righteousness.

This is a process known as renewing the mind. Renew your mind by learning what God says about you and what scripture says happens to you once becoming born again, taking part in Christ's death and resurrection (symbolized in baptism). This is a saint's guide to sinning less, and the solution is found in identity. This identity comes by revelation of the Holy Spirit as Teacher. Remember, it is God who sanctifies us ultimately, and this renewal of the mind is coming in agreement with God about who we are in Jesus Christ.

I knew you would read this and point that very part out. Its because you think I am saying we are to be oblivious to the sin, but that isn't what is being presented. The point is that old habits die hard. This is a process of sanctification, and so fruit takes time to bear. VVe must renew our mind, and in doing so, sin is reduced.

I agree Ben!

I love the scripture that says "Awake to righteousness and sin not" I did a study on the Greek word "Awake" - and it means - "to come to one's self, to sober up to who you really are."

The understanding of the new birth in Christ and that we are in fact new creatures with a new heart that has a new spirit - created in righteousness and holiness is paramount in growing in Christ.

We will remain baby Christians until we awake to who we are in Christ because of Jesus' completed work. We need to be establish in the word of righteousness in order to grow up in Christ. Hebrews says that they who are not accustomed to the word of righteousness are still babes.

Immaturity keeps us from understanding righteousness; i.e., our right standing with God. Therefore, understanding righteousness is an indication of maturity.

The English word “unaccustomed” was translated from the Greek word “APEIROS,” and it means “inexperienced, i.e. ignorant”.

“The word of righteousness” is speaking about justification by faith, as opposed to trying to earn our right standing with God. Those who haven’t understood justification by grace are still babes in Christ.

Romans 7 might help you to grow in understanding in this area.

Sometimes terms and their meanings can throw us off in explaining things out. Here is Paul talking about things in Romans 7.

Romans 7:17-23 (NASB)

[SUP]17[/SUP] So now, no longer am I ( the new man ) the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me (in my body which has the flesh with the law of sin in it ).

[SUP]18[/SUP] For I know that nothing good dwells in me (my body which has the flesh in it ), that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me ( in my new man ), but the doing of the good is not.

Romans 7:20-23 (NASB)

[SUP]20[/SUP] But if I am doing the very thing I ( new man ) do not want, I ( new man ) am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me ( in the flesh).

[SUP]21[/SUP] I find then the principle that evil is present in me (the flesh and the new man ), the one who wants to do good.

[SUP]22[/SUP] For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, (new man),

[SUP]23[/SUP] but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.

italics = my words

Then Romans chapter 8 comes in and shows us how to walk according to the Spirit and not the flesh to put to death the deeds of the body ( flesh in the body ). Rom 8:13

When we sin, the path to healing is to realize, yeah that is exactly who we are. Acknowledge it and be healed in GOD's grace.

I thought hyper grace doctrine teaches that being sin-conscious is evil and subverts the renewing of the mind. I guess maybe you don't agree with this point of doctrine?

Your old nature/old man was crucified with Christ, read Romans 6:6. It isn't exactly who you are. The healing by God's grace happens when one is under God's grace and when we continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Seems the word of God, and What HRFTD are at odds with each other..

The law says we are sinners. Grace says we are forgiven.

A sinner continues in sin, A child who knows he is forgiven strives to please his father, So as that child stops worrying about self. but his thoughts are about pleasing his father, sins by nature fade away.

Thats your first problem, YOU THINK you know hyper grace,

it has been well established you don't.. Thats why you keep making such mistakes, Instead of listening to people. You listen to ideas you seem to think these people believe..

one under grace seeks the things of the spirit and is not self focused

One under law (any law) is law focused (I must maintain this standard) thus his focus is on self not God, and temptation comes and woops, I just sinned..

A person who struggles with coveting is not going to be healed by a law which says do not covet, While focusing on it, and trying so hard not to do it, Coveting will always be on his mind, He is weak, And he will never gain victory but will continue to fall, because it is his weakness

It can only be overcome by changing our attitude from attitude (law), to gratitude, (grace) or thanksgiving, which leads us to serve others..

It seems you have a misunderstanding of what sin-consciousness means. Nor do they call it evil, but unfruitful. Instead of teaching on Jesus Christ and our identity in Him people would rather focus (this is the consciousness part) on sin and the law (representing how what we are doing is wrong, "so stop it"). You see, people preach heavily on sin at times and with it condemnation. They lift up the law as a bar, and say, "Go for it." This is sin consciousness, every sermon and lesson on sin and sin avoidance instead of victory over sin and Jesus Christ's finished work at the cross.

Some might say, "Stop being sin-conscious and be Son-conscious." Meaning, stop focusing so much on sin and start focusing on Christ. He has given us victory over sin. If people are struggling with sin, the solution is grace (and not law). Its God's solution, His way of setting us free from sin's dominion.

I know the question is burning inside of you. Yes, sin needs to be dealt with. VVe are not oblivious to our sin, we just know that it doesn't define us. Jesus does. VVe also know that God grants victory over that sin, through Christ and by grace. The Holy Spirit teaches us these truths, allowing us to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Sin-consciousness in other words translates to a lifestyle revolved around the topic of sin and sin avoidance, but doesn't emphasize Jesus Christ and the victory [over sin] found under grace. So where as some preachers would condemn their congregation in sin and hold up the law and say do better, the grace preacher doesn't condemn the congregation. He attempts to awaken them to righteousness so that they sin not. To lead them to a revelation of Jesus Christ and His grace so that they may see the victory they have over sin. In this way sin isn't their focus, but Jesus is and He gets the glory to their success over sin in their life.

Sin consciousness is evil, as it is contrary to what God says about sin and about you.

you could go to a universalism site, and it's going to say everyone is going to heaven, which is not true. so, a website posting something proves your point about people here saying these things how???

Can you give a link please?

I haven't seen this statement before but maybe what they are alluding to is that to be sin-focused instead of what Christ has done for us - that is evil?..I don't know..just throwing some things out there.
