Hello brother Jackson,
The weekly Sabbath is mentioned in Leviticus 23 in verse 3 of course. That is not the point that I was trying to share with you earlier.
The point I was making earlier and sharing with you is that the
annual festival Sabbaths and Holy Convocations in the annual Jewish Festivals in Leviticus 23 were special sabbaths (not the 7th Day Weekly Sabbath of God's 4th commandment).
These annual sabbaths are not the 4th commandment (Not the 7th Day according to God's commandment; Exodus 20:8-11). They can fall on any day of the week depending on what year it is. You can find the Holy convocations for most festivals. On these days and the special festival sabbaths NO work was to be conducted.
Col 2 is referring to the Mosaic Shadow laws for remission of Sin which includes the New Moons, annual ceremonial festival sabbaths and holy convocations of Leviticus 23 which could fall on any day of the week (these are not the weekly Sabbath of God's 4th commandment) that were pointing to Jesus and have their fulfillment at the cross (see Exodus 20:8-11; John 19:31;Lev 23:24; 32)
When one of the Festival sabbaths (not weekly 4th commandment) or Holy convocations of Leviticus 23 fell on a normal weekly Sabbath (4th commandment)
it was called a high Sabbath day ..................
John 19:31 (BSB)
It was the day of Preparation, and the next day was a High Sabbath. So in order that the bodies would not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed.
John 19:31 (KJV)
The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, for that sabbath day was an High day, besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
John 19:31 (NIV)
Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
The annual festival Sabbaths of Lev 23 were different to God's weekly 7th day Sabbath of the 4th commandmenthere are a few examples below...........
Leviticus 23
4, These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.
5, In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD'S Passover.
6, And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.
7, In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
8, But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
Leviticus 23:24
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.
Leviticus 23
26, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
27, Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
28, And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.
29, For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.
30, And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.
31, Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
32, It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.
Now these special Sabbaths that were NOT the weekly Sabbath of God's 4th commandment (Exodus 20:8-11) could fall on ANY day of the week and whatever day it fell on NO Work was to be carried out hence special or uncommon sabbath. (see High Sabbaths wiki)
Brother Jackson, now take a look at the scripture in Leviticus chapter 23, The word sabbath(s) is plural in Col 2:16 because there is more than one of these special annual holy days that were required to be kept in the annual Festivals. Also have a look at the
context of all the other things mentioned together in v16 (1) Meat and Drink, (2) Holy days (The GREEK Word used is Festivals), (3) New Moons and (4) sabbath(s). All of the 4 points highlighted is to do with the annual Jewish Festivals (Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread, Feast of First Fruits, Feast of Booths (Tabernacles), Feast of Trumpets, Atonement see Leviticus 23)
Col 2:16
Let no man therefore judge you in
meat, or in drink, or in
respect of an holyday, or of the
new moon, or of the
sabbath [days]
All of the above
(1) Meat and drink offerings, (2) Holy days (GREEK word = Festival), (3) New Moon and (4) sabbath day(s) are all a requirement of the annual festivals mentioned throughout the Old testament in Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Ezekiel and other places in relation to the annual Jewish festivals. Col 2:14-17 is NOT talking about God's 4th commandment but referring to the annual festival Holy days.
Here compare some of the scriptures here............
COL. 2 [16] Let no man therefore judge you in MEAT, or in DRINK, or in respect of an HOLYDAY, or of the NEW MOON, or of the SABBATH DAY(S) <plural>:
EZEKIEL 45 [17] And it shall be the prince's part to give BURNT OFFERINGS, and MEAT OFFERINGS, and DRINK OFFERINGS, in the FEASTS, and in the NEW MOONS, and in the SABBATH(S), in all solemnities of the house of Israel: he shall prepare the sin offering, and the meat offering, and the burnt offering, and the peace offerings, to make reconciliation for the house of Israel.
Here’s a scripture, same exact order as Col 2{16}, meat, drink, holy days (feast days), new moons, Sabbath(s). No doubt what so ever these 2 scriptures are speaking of the same thing. See how that on those days there was a sin offering made. The blood of Christ is now that offering. Col.2 and Ezekiel 45 are simply speaking of the meat and drink offerings which were written in the Mosaic law contained within the ordinances which were to take place on Gods annual festivals, new moons and His annual ceremonial Sabbath days and Holy convocations (Leviticus 23).
HEBREWS 13 [9] Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be ESTABLISHED WITH GRACE; NOT WITH MEATS, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. [10] We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. [11] For THE BODIES OF THOSE BEASTS, WHOSE BLOOD is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. [12] WHEREFORE JESUS ALSO, THAT HE MIGHT SANCTIFY THE PEOPLE WITH HIS OWN BLOOD, suffered without the gate.
But now we are no longer under the Mosaic laws concerning the meat and drink offerings of Gods holy days, new moons and annual festival sabbaths and holy convocations. Jesus fulfilled the law. We are now under grace.
JOHN 6 [53] Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. [54] Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. [55] For MY FLESH IS MEAT INDEED, and MY BLOOD IS DRINK INDEED.
When we let scripture interpret scripture it’s very clear what Col.2 is speaking about. The meat and drink offerings of those days are no longer to be kept and no one is to judge you for not keeping them because they were shadows pointing to Jesus.
NUMBERS 28 [9] And on the Sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a MEAT OFFERING, mingled with oil, and the DRINK OFFERING thereof: [10] This is the burnt offering of EVERY SABBATH, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.
There’s the meat and drink offerings for the monthly and annual festival sabbath days that Col.2 [16] was speaking of. This was not a weekly requirement for the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] commandment of God’s Law (Exodus 20:8-11)
EZEKIEL 46 [6] And in the day of the NEW MOON it shall be a young bullock without blemish, and six lambs, and a ram: they shall be without blemish. [7] And he shall prepare a MEAT OFFERING, an ephah for a bullock, and an ephah for a ram, and for the lambs according as his hand shall attain unto, and an hin of oil to an ephah.
The meat offering for the new moon that was spoken of in Col.2 [16].
LEVITICUS 23 [4] These are THE FEASTS OF THE LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons. [5] In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is THE LORD'S PASSOVER. [6] And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the Lord: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread…… [13] And the MEAT OFFERING thereof shall be two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire unto the Lord for a sweet savour: and the DRINK OFFERING thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of an hin.
In all the feast days (holy days) meat and drink offerings were written into the laws of commandments contained in the ordinances. The above scripture points out the holy day of Passover when Jesus was crucified.
HEBREWS 9 [1] Then verily THE FIRST COVENANT HAD ALSO ORDINANCES of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.... [9] WHICH WAS A FIGURE for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;[10] WHICH STOOD ONLY IN MEATS AND DRINKS, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.[12] NEITHER BY THE BLOOD OF GOATS AND CALVES, BUT BY HIS OWN BLOOD he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Once again, the 1st covenant had ordinances which stood only in meat and drinks which were a figure! A shadow!
EPH.2 [15] HAVING ABOLISHED in his flesh the enmity, even the LAW OF COMMANDMENTS CONTAINED IN ORDINANCES; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;[16] And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
COL. 2 [13] And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; [14] BLOTTING OUT THE HANDWRITING OF ORDINANCES that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
ISAIAH 24 [5] The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, CHANGED THE ORDINANCE, broken the everlasting covenant.[6] Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.
But in this “Day of the Lord” scripture it seems the many will go on believing what they’ve been taught by their sunday mourning pulpiteers. They will continue to believe the commandments mentioned in Eph.2 and Col. 2 are the 10 commandments and not the law of commandments contained in the ordinances
The “many” claim that the sabbath was the shadow of Christ. But what do the scriptures say
COL.2 [14] BLOTTING OUT THE HANDWRITING OF ORDINANCES that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;[15] And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.[16] Let no man therefore judge you in MEAT, or in DRINK, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:[17] WHICH ARE A SHADOW OF THINGS TO COME; but the body is of Christ.
You can see many more scriptures provided here in the
Col 2 thread linked
Whenever God's 4th commandment is mentioned is it Sabbath day (singular not plural) for example.....
Exodus 20
8, Remember the
sabbath day , to keep it holy.
9, Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10, But the
seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God : in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11, For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested
the seventh day : wherefore
the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
and.......
Matthew 12
8, For the Son of man is Lord even of the
sabbath day.
There is not one scripture in ALL of God's WORD that says God's 4th commandment is now ABOLISHED and we are now commanded to worship God on Sunday in it's place. There is NO scripture that says Jesus is a Sabbath.
Sunday worship is a tradition and teaching of man that has lead many to break the commandments of God. Jesus says that if we follow the traditions of man that break the commandments of God we are not following God (Matthew 15:3-9)
Who should we follow the teachings and traditions of men or the Word of God? Who should we believe the Words of men or the Word of God?
May God bless you as you seek Him through His Word.
