Right after John came home, we were inundated with in-home care people (therapists and a nurse) and doctor appointments, but he also wanted teeth. (They were all removed through surgery after he got his new heart valve to protect it.) So we scheduled an appointment with the dentist.
The biggest obstacle was the steps. John has trouble getting up to our second floor still, so facing eight steps to get to the dentist office was the biggest problem -- until I learned they had a wheelchair lift.
Getting good dentures takes 4-5 visits before the teeth are ready and then as many visits as needed to make sure they fit right.
July 6 -- He used the lift in his wheelchair.
July 13 -- We parked across the street (the size of an alley) and he took the lift in his walker.
July 20 -- We parked across a street wide enough for six lanes, he took his walker, and went up the lift.
July 27 -- Well? The lift broke the day before and the repair people needed a part, so it wasn't going to be fixed for a week. Plus we were having a 10-day heat wave and the Democrats were in town (three blocks away.) John asked to schedule it the next day.
July 28 -- He took his cane and climbed those steps.
The staff was shocked. lol
Also, our goal has been to walk around the block as a way to exercise once John can walk that far. He's been able to walk down the long side of our block and back for a while now, but that heatwave made it dangerous to push himself.
Two days ago, he asked if I minded walking down the block with him on our Sabbath Rest Day and I laughed. Walking around the block was always a leisurely walk in my mind. Something like a short date. So, I get his long-distant walker out front. (The long-distant walker has a seat so he can sit when tired.) He asked me to bring the debit card.
Instead of going down the long-side of the black, we head to our local Rite-Aid, which is two short-blocks away. (Two short-blocks is one long-side.) We got there, roamed the aisles, bought a couple of things, and then went to the park across the street. We were planning on walking to that park after gaining the strength to get around the block. He just upped the time schedule by two months.
Honestly? Until our that last trip to the dentist, I thought John was never going to get back to his old self, once more even healthier than he was. I couldn't see the forest because of the tree right in front of me.
But God really is making him get better faster than expected... even faster that I expect!
Thank you, Lord.
