So let me set this straight first and foremost. I don't believe the following question disproves God at all. I don't believe in evolution either. I do believe in the Big Bang Theory except for the crucial part of how it started. I do not believe it was a "God particle", of which we have NO evidence even remotely indicating that it exists. I believe the Big Bang was God creating the universe. Especially since matter can't exist without space/time but God can. Again I do not believe that this question disproves God, but it might raise some hairy questions as to the age of the universe/earth that I would like to see answers to.

Today, most Christians believe Earth to be around 6,000-7,000 years old or so. As for anyone who took high school physics, we know undeniably that many of the stars we see in the sky every night simply do not exist anymore since the speed of light is 700 million miles an hour and many stars are easily BILLIONS of light years ( a light year is the distance that light can travel in one year) away. For instance it takes a whopping 8 minutes and 20 seconds just to receive light from our own VERY CLOSE neighbor, the Sun.

But I am still interested that people believe the universe to be so young. With these physics that aren't theoretical, (I don't believe in most theoretical physics, especially string theory) how do you explain that the Earth is only 6,000-7,000 years old even though we receive light from stars BILLIONS of LIGHT YEARS away???

I am extremely interested in your opinions on the subject.

You make excellent points that I agree with 100%. And as a Bible believing Christian, my response is this: the Bible never states the age of the Earth. It does not even imply its age. We are only told that it was created in the beginning. Many people use the age of humanity (6,000-7000 years) and apply that to the Earth but the Bible does not state this to be true. God bless.

If you believe in supernatural creation, it doesn't seem unreasonable to believe that God created the stars with some measure of light already in transit, if this sort of question is a problem.

Today, most Christians believe Earth to be around 6,000-7,000 years old or so.
I'd be interested to see statistics on this; I don't have a good sense of this number but imagine someone has studied it formally.

Except the Bible never says this. So we have no basis, as Christians, to believe that God did something like that.

The bible gives us an age of the earth. All you have to do, is know addition and subtraction.

I have never seen a satisfying answer as to where you fit in the fall of Satan and the angels if all creation is only 6,000 years old. Its like trying to fit an elephant into a clown car.

This thread is basically gonna turn into the other one

No? The third verse in the Bible indicates the creation of light before the creation of lights, plural, in the fourteenth. If one is trying to figure out this particular timeline, although I'm not, I don't see why this doesn't serve as a possible biblical basis.

I believe that God didn't think it was necessary for us to know how old the earth is.
What I believe that He does want us to know is, His plan of Redemption for all mankind.

Where we came from, and our state of helplessness, and His plan to come and Redeem us back to Him

And that was done in 7 days, (to God) or 7,000 yrs to us.

That's why it only appears to be 7,000 yrs. old, because it is God's plan of Redemption.

Blessings

You bring up a very interesting and valid point here. A star that we see at night could have had a supernova hundreds or thousands of years ago and we simply haven't noticed this considering the amount the amount of time it will take for that image (light) to reach us from such a far distance.

True, I remember when I first started out on my journey,
I became almost obsessed with time and why what Jesus did
was so important that it changed when He died on the cross.

But it led me to Him, of course now I realize EVERYTHING CHANGED
When He was crucified, including me.

Blessings

God could have created the light to be here at creation. God is not restricted to the laws of nature. He made the sun stand still, the sun to go back 10 degrees and the red sea to part. The problem is that people restrict God to the laws of nature.

And this is almost certainly what Genesis intends us to understand, that light was created and sustained before the creation of individual sources of light. And it wasn't just some glow coming from all directions - it's indicated that the light was separated from the darkness; i.e. this is directional.

Angels were created before this world. There were other worlds already created when this was.
Hebrews 1:2
(2) Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Luke 3:38
(38) Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
Job 38:7
(7) When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

The morning stars are angels the sons of God are people on other worlds, they were already created when this world was created.

how long would it take for a piece of coal in the hand of God to become a diamond? most of the things "we know undeniably" are based on our understanding and perception of space and time. is our understanding and perception as great as Gods? if only there was some tree we could eat from to be able to have that understanding. oh wait, that might not be such a good idea. does perception define reality or does reality define perception? can God define both?

science is a great way for humanity to try and understand the hardware of the world we live in. its benefits are clear to all in helping humanity have a higher standard of living than previous generations. we can look at something and all come to a conclusion as being the most reasonable explanation, based on our understanding and perception. some are simple and others are not.

how many people in this day and age do not know the sun isn't yellow? its white, as are all the other stars in the sky. when you see a picture of the cosmos taken from the hubble telescope, those pictures are colored in by nasa. does this in any way change our understanding or perception on how the sun effects us ? the examples of starlight is a great one. we believe that stars are objects far away that are similar to our sun. can anyone prove that? do you have solid evidence proving that's the case or is our understanding based on our perception of pictures, that we then create theories about? is that knowledge or faith in a theory as knowledge. i guess until we go there to see it first hand its only a theory. to others its considered knowledge.

as for the bible, did you know it is something that can be experienced by you today. it is after all a book consisting of what people experienced and teaches you on how to experience it. many people like myself come forward to witness about how it is true and how we have experienced it. is my experience proof of faith? is your theory proof of knowledge? if you think the bible cannot be proved, you didn't do what it teaches. seek and ye shall find. not after you die, but before you die.

when you look at the universe and all "we know undeniably" to expect me to think it was a random chance is an insult to my intelligence. i used to say that before my experiences. i know the truth of it now as undeniable.what does it matter what are stars or how old the earth is? what does it have to do with humanity? what does it have to do with God? humanity swims in an ocean of Gods love and don't even know they are wet. don't miss the boat.
