Apologetic's is a wonderful tool that simply takes the mind that is closed and shows it that the bible story is rational and possible. This hopefully leads to the closed mind opening and exploring the truth.

Its a bridge.

I get it...it does feel futile to continue trying to verbally defend the truth when it seems soooo unhearable to the world.
Unbearable, too ;) But unbelievers also need to know that we have good reasons for believing what we do, as so many assume we only believe because we were "told to," and are incapable of thinking for ourselves, or making up our own minds on the matter... which is odd that they then want us to allow them to tell us what to believe instead. Some seem intent upon outright destroying the faith of believers. They will even say as much.

You spoke a post or two ago about debating with Atheist....I found out the hard way, they debate not to gain more believers but rather to destroy the Christian Faith. By destroying the Christian Faith
only then can they justify their religion and atheism is a religion.

I spoke online with various atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, wiccans, polytheists, Satanists, and other deniers of the Truth of God's Word, over a period of eight years before I found Christian Chat. I was a fairly new Christian when I stumbled into apologetics, and it sure was eye opening  I learned a lot :) And I liked it ;)
Could you imagine having dinner with them all at the same time!... would need a long sleep after that :)

I once had dinner with a catholic and an agnostic, which made for interesting conversation, but things went a bit pear shaped once he started talking about cannibalism

True, but in the process they do actually end up dragging blind followers over to their side, which is why it's important for believers to get the truth out.

The atheist I'm thinking of has a large audience (would never name him here as he's quite dangerous, particularly to those who are here searching), and while his goal is clearly to attack christianity, you just never know who is listening to those debates that end up wanting to know more about Jesus as a result.

I've noticed he's budged on some of his views over the last several years. Some things he denied back then he now accepts, and I really think he's on a journey which will eventually lead him to Jesus. He does actively seek out debates with christians and by now has probably noticed we all say the exact same thing, despite never having met each other.

Unfortunately I know of one person that became convinced by what he said, and could not wait to tell me. He emailed to say he was leaving his church because he thought this guy made some very good points. He even tried to push those beliefs on me. Very sad :(

Is it necessary? What good does it do?
It's indispensable:

  • "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses." (1Tim 6.12).
  • "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:" (2Tim 4.7).
  • "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints." (Jude 3).

By the way: apologetics is the defense of the faith.

I have never had much interest in the practice. To me, it is a cobbling together of a defense of faith. My view is that anyone could manufacture a defense of anything as the apologists do. To me, if you have faith - and have good reason for your faith - you don't need apologetics.

Apologetics is not needed for those who are already Christians and settled in their faith.
Apologetics is a vital evangelistic tool where a ready defence of all sorts of attacks on the Christian faith is important!
Apologetics is also helpful for those whose faith is being shaken, perhaps by attending university, and is encountering all sorts of challenges and objections to their faith...

A lot of Christians cannot even defend the historical reality of the Gospel narratives (to do this one does not even really need to appeal to extra-Biblical resources) never mind navigate the creation account in Genesis when challenged by well-informed sceptics of whatever hue!

And, when one comes against Mormon's or Seventh Day Adventists or Muslims, most are even less prepared to counter their iniquitous claims...

Welcome to CC, DanMe...
Your sentence in bold is self-refuting. If you have good reason for your faith, you have an "apologetic". :)

Paul was set for the defense (apologia) of the Gospel; Philippians 1:7, 16. Apologetics is defending the Gospel. Galatians and Romans are two good examples of an apologetic defense of the Gospel.

Actually 1 Peter 3:15 is exhorting believers to have an apologetic (apologia/answer) for their faith, ready to be given to those who ask concerning their hope. So we do need apologetics, biblically speaking.

I, for one, can understand the unbelievers attacking our understanding of what God is doing with mankind. There are so many different doctrines out there: How does one know he is really following the true Creator God? We paint God as an all powerful,
loving entity that has already prophesied that most won't be making it to the Kingdom of God. God seems to be losing out to the devil on gaining souls.

God tells us: He is love. (1 John 4:8,16) Then He tells us that Satan is so good at deceiving Christians that many will be eventually rejected by Christ. (Matt. 7:23 & Luke 13:27) To the unbelieving this doesn't make much sense. Then He gives us scriptures like this:

1 Tim. 2:3,4: "For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth."

2 Pet. 3:9:
"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."

God tells us to go about witnessing the good work He is doing among us, even though Most are lost?
Something to think about.

The truth that they have no choice?

Yes, I am certain that will encourage them.
Its more the truth thatthey do have a new choice, as new born-again creatures.
We defend the faith ofChrist as the work of God that works in us. It is the sword of His spirit asthe armor of God. Again, as we defend it, it defends us.
