As much as a big controvery is this, I seek answers to understand further more about the Holy Spirit. I started this thread on another forum and it ended up in a big fight and debate; no, I need answers, not debates.

From my understanding, the baptism in water is simply a public testimony of our faith in Jesus Christ.

But John the Baptist said:

Matthew 3:11
11 “I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Seems very easy, right? But in Ephesians there's one more thing.

Ephesians 4:5
There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
I assume that "one baptism" is the one in Holy Spirit? Let's not forget that when Jesus came out from the water, He was filled with the Holy Spirit.

So how does one get baptized in Holy Spirit? Someone who is Pentecostal told me that someone has to place hands on you and speak in tongues, since speaking in tongues is a testimony of Holy Spirit working.

It seems the therm of "tongues" has been corrupted years ago when someone faked it and began being used by religions.

The idea of "tongues" originally in the times of the apostles was a different language to preach the Word to the gentiles who did not know the language.

Someone else told me there are three baptisms. Knowing I'm yet a newborn, this is quite confusing for me, so I would appreciate some further explanation on this.

First, Baptism in the spirit can refer to two things. If you have never been told about the Holy Spirit, you can ask Him to come into you. Second, if you have not been told about everything He can do, Baptism in the Spirit can open you up to everything He can do. [There's a theological hair here to split. It's what's causing your question about the two seemingly contradictory Scriptures. The theological answer is that the word "baptism" is used several ways in Scripture since there are several kinds. The better answer is: Ignore it. God doesn't care who's right, He cares who's loving.]

How do you do it? You ask for it. You. No one needs to lay on hands. In 40 years of working with this, I have learned that people who get hands laid on often are backslidden within 10 years. The people who have given their lives totally to the Lord in ministry and stay with Him their whole life have been the ones who ask for it in their homes, alone. There are no particular words. Anything like, "Lord, your word says I can be filled with the Holy Spirit. Thank you for doing it now." I have never known it not to work. You might not feel anything, but almost everyone finds a new power of God in their lives within days or weeks, often unexpected.

People are indeed faking tongues. You can see it on the Internet. I know thousands who have real tongues. It's a way for your spirit to pray bypassing conscious language. If God wants you to have it, take it. If not, no big deal. God knows what He is doing.

As far as how many baptisms there are, it depends who you talk to. Baptism means being immersed and surrounded by something. You can be baptized in God's love, His joy, His peace. It all depends on how theological you want to get or how practical.

Important things to remember:

*The Spirit and His work are not feelings, they are reality. If feelings come, enjoy them. If they do not, live by faith.
*Satan will try to tempt you first, that you don't want it; second, that you did not get it; and finally now that you have it, you don't need church or other Christians any more.
*You may need to find new friends, even new Christian friends. A lot of people are scared of total commitment.

I am teaching you what has worked for forty years for hundreds of thousands of people.

CC'ers. if you have experienced the dynamic release of the Holy Spirit, please post a little testimony. They are very useful to helping new people who do not know what to expect.

Here's the bulk of a post I made several weeks ago concerning the indwelling of the Holy Spirit:

There are several places in scripture where the Holy Spirit made His presence felt in the lives of many, not just the original Apostles. However, for clarity's sake, let's start in the book of John, chapter 20, when a resurrected Jesus appears to His disciples:


John 20: 19-23:

19 Then on that same first day of the week, when it was evening, though the disciples were behind closed doors for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace to you!

20 So saying, He showed them His hands and His side. And when the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy (delight, exultation, ecstasy, rapture).

21 Then Jesus said to them again, Peace to you! [Just] as the Father has sent Me forth, so I am sending you.

22 And having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit!

23 [Now having received the Holy Spirit, and being led and directed by Him] if you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained.



Personally, I would equate the occurrence in John 20 as the initial salvation experience of Jesus' disciples seeing as the disciples now know without a doubt that the ressurected Jesus is indeed the Christ.

Scripture then speaks of a secondary occurrence; an enduement of power from on high for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Look no further than Acts, chapters one and two for a scriptural example of this occurrence when the original 11 disciples and 109 others receive of of the Holy Spirit:


Acts 1: 3-8:

3 To them also He showed Himself alive after His passion (His suffering in the garden and on the cross) by [a series of] many convincing demonstrations [unquestionable evidences and infallible proofs], appearing to them during forty days and talking [to them] about the things of the kingdom of God.

4 And while being in their company and eating with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised, Of which [He said] you have heard Me speak.

5 For John baptized with water, but not many days from now you shall be baptized with (placed in, introduced into) the Holy Spirit.

6 So when they were assembled, they asked Him, Lord, is this the time when You will reestablish the kingdom and restore it to Israel?

7 He said to them, It is not for you to become acquainted with and know what time brings [the things and events of time and their definite periods] or fixed years and seasons (their critical niche in time), which the Father has appointed (fixed and reserved) by His own choice and authority and personal power.

8 But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.


Acts 2: 1-4
:

1 And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all assembled together in one place,

2 When suddenly there came a sound from heaven like the rushing of a violent tempest blast, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting.

3 And there appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were separated and distributed and which settled on each one of them.

4 And they were all filled (diffused throughout their souls) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression [in each tongue in appropriate words].



For further scriptural proof of yet another corporate physical manifestation of the Holy Spirit, look no further than Acts chapter 4 after Peter & John's arrest:


Acts 4: 23-33:

23 After they were permitted to go, [the apostles] returned to their own [company] and told all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

24 And when they heard it, lifted their voices together with one united mind to God and said, O Sovereign Lord, You are He Who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything that is in them,

25 Who by the mouth of our forefather David, Your servant and child, said through the Holy Spirit, Why did the heathen (Gentiles) become wanton and insolent and rage, and the people imagine and study and plan vain (fruitless) things [that will not succeed]?

26 The kings of the earth took their stand in array [for attack] and the rulers were assembled and combined together against the Lord and against His Anointed (Christ, the Messiah).

27 For in this city there actually met and plotted together against Your holy Child and Servant Jesus, Whom You consecrated by anointing, both Herod and Pontius Pilate with the Gentiles and peoples of Israel,

28 To carry out all that Your hand and Your will and purpose had predestined (predetermined) should occur.

29 And now, Lord, observe their threats and grant to Your bond servants [full freedom] to declare Your message fearlessly,

30 While You stretch out Your hand to cure and to perform signs and wonders through the authority and by the power of the name of Your holy Child and Servant Jesus.

31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they continued to speak the Word of God with freedom and boldness and courage.

32 Now the company of believers was of one heart and soul, and not one of them claimed that anything which he possessed was [exclusively] his own, but everything they had was in common and for the use of all.

33 And with great strength and ability and power the apostles delivered their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace (loving-kindness and favor and goodwill) rested richly upon them all.




The original Apostles were not the only ones to receive the Holy Spirit in such manner. In Acts chapter 10, Cornelius (a Roman centurion) and his entire household of gentiles receive the Holy Spirit in like manner after God had revealed to Peter that salvation is for both the Jew & Gentile:


Acts 10: 44-46:

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening to the message.

45 And the believers from among the circumcised [the Jews] who came with Peter were surprised and amazed, because the free gift of the Holy Spirit had been bestowed and poured out largely even on the Gentiles.

46 For they heard them talking in [unknown] tongues (languages) and extolling and magnifying God.



In Acts 19 we find another occurrence where yet another group of people receive of the Holy Spirit in similar manner:



Acts 19: 1-7:

1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul went through the upper inland districts and came down to Ephesus. There he found some disciples.

2 And he asked them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed [on Jesus as the Christ]? And they said, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.

3 And he asked, Into what [baptism] then were you baptized? They said, Into John’s baptism.

4 And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, continually telling the people that they should believe in the One Who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus [having a conviction full of joyful trust that He is Christ, the Messiah, and being obedient to Him].

5 On hearing this they were baptized [again, this time] in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 And as Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke in [foreign, unknown] tongues (languages) and prophesied.

I don't think this explaination to the OP can be improved upon. I concur with the above statement on how to resolve this issue for yourself ShyForHIm and suggest this be just the thing you do.

I agree with Barlygurl, I doubt you could get a better explanation than kenisyes has given you.

But if you are still unsure, I could only suggest praying that God will lead you to the right person to chat to about the subject, or lead you to the correct book to read

If you seek a lot of different peoples opinions you may become very confused, as there is much disagreement between Christians concerning this subject

From what I see, I am more than hungry and thirsty in all this. I know Holy Spirit gives varied gifts, not only tongues, so maybe within time I will also see what is my strength in this life so I could preach for the lost.

Okay, here's mine (from 25 years ago) ...

A few months after my first trip (as an evangelist to Bulgaria), I received the baptism with the Holy Spirit
(which has nothing to do with being born again). There were 15 of us attending a Sunday night church service. I was standing at the front, facing 6 people who were on the stage: my pastor and his wife, a visiting evangelist and his wife, my wife, and the piano player. We were all praying for me to receive this baptism.
After a few minutes, I heard an angelic choir singing loudly (with instruments). Later, my pastor said he heard me speak a few words in tongues, and I kept saying, “They all had microphones!” (because of the loud singing). All on the stage also heard the angelic choir, as did 2 in the audience, for a total of 9 out of
the 15 in attendance. We heard it “in the spirit” because the angelic choir and instruments were NOT on the tape recording of the meeting.

Jesus is The One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit ... it is an ANOINTING for some special service.

1. There is no such thing as being baptized in the HS. The biblical term is being baptized with the Holy Spirit.

2. Baptism of the Holy Spirit (another term used) is the act of God baptizing us in the death and burial of christ (rom 6) and Body of Christ (1 cor 12) It is the act of the HS baptizing us into Christ (gal 3: 27) It is the spiritual circumcision we receive done by the hand of God (Col 2: 11- 12) and not by the hands of men.

3. it is the one prophesied by John, "I indeed baptize with water, but one comes after me, he will baptize with the HS and Fire.

This is the first report I have heard of this in this century. It was common in the Methodist outdoor revivals of the 1870's or so. Many people would actually play along with invisible instruments. I don't think the term "baptism in/with the Spirit" was used at that time yet.

You might want to Google up "ministry gifts survey". Not that these tests are correct, but they will give you a starting place to pray about this.

This does NOT refer to a phony salvation, which has always been quite prevalent,
i.e. merely an intellectual belief or conversion of one’s thinking.
But this refers to being “born again (from above)” with the Holy Spirit entering the person.
“For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body (the church)
… and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:13)

The Holy Spirit takes up residence
INSIDE the believer … John 14:16-23; Romans 8:11;

Baptism with the Holy Spirit (mostly power for ministry)

Matthew 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, John 1:33.
The baptism with the Holy Spirit comes after being born again (or at the same time).
7 verses say that for this baptism the Holy Spirit comes
UPON the believer, for example:
“… the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. Then I remembered
the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall
be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ ” (Acts 11:15-16)

for instance... my LORD JESUS CHRIST was baptized by water and received the HOLY SPIRIT. therefore,*if our LORD JESUS CHRIST is our very example FOR EVERYTHING... then why do we change GOD'S DIVINELY ORDER of how we must follow GOD?

neither was Water Baptism just introduced in the New Testament it was also in the Old Testament as well. this is why the priests and levites went down and asked John the Baptist why he was baptizing for they knew what baptism was for and why it was VERY necessary.*

water baptism is just not an outward confession for the world to see but is a Death/Resurrection from the world. in order for this to be a true baptism you must truly repent and be BAPTIZED ACCORDING TO ACTS 2:38 ONLY... and NOT to Matthew 28:19 for this is a false Baptism. you also must be fully immersed in the water AND be baptized in the name of my LORD JESUS CHRIST ONLy... for this is a burial/resurrection and also a cleansing/washing by GOD'S HOLY WORD then we receive a portion/measure of the HOLY SPIRIT for our journey till we reach that TRUE BORN AGAIN EXPERIENCE which rids of ALL WORLDLY WAYS... drinking, smoking, lying, adultery, fornication, and UNBELIEF IN GOD'S HOLY WORD.

for if our LORD JESUS CHRIST went through EVERY WORD OF GOD'S DIVINELY ORDER then so MUST we.

If you would like to read something interesting about "baptism in the holy spirit" Do the following: Bring up Google. Then type in "The word of truth ministry" by OTIS Q. SELLERS. After you bring this up, look for " 199 seed and bread messages" Underlined in red. When you bring this up you will see a list of " 199 different messages." Go down the list to number "SB138 IDENTIFICATION WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT." you might find this interesting.

i gave you the answers previously it is empowerment it is up to you to believe nothing would please me that all of you speak in tongues but to deny the spirit baptism is to deny jesus for this he came testifying in the spirit and clearly said it but it is written The reason I use parables in talking to them is that they look, but do not see, and they listen, but do not hear or understand.
Mat 13:14 So the prophecy of Isaiah applies to them: 'This people will listen and listen, but not understand; they will look and look, but not see,
Mat 13:15 because their minds are dull, and they have stopped up their ears and have closed their eyes. Otherwise, their eyes would see, their ears would hear, their minds would understand, and they would turn to me, says God, and I would heal them.'
Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God's Spirit. Such a person really does not understand them, and they seem to be nonsense, because their value can be judged only on a spiritual basis.
1Co 2:15 Whoever has the Spirit, however, is able to judge the value of everything, but no one is able to judge him.
to be able to fully understand you must open your heart to receive the blessing to start living according to the fullness of the spirit in complete holiness to deny the holy spirit is to deny jesus remember a kingdom divided cannot stand blessings if you receive

Be cafeful that you don't miss the gift God has given you. While searching for the gift you think you want.

Believe in Him and believe and be baptized (receive the Holy Spirit, by faith).
It's like that att commercial-- and, no, no, no, this post is not of legalism, or, condemnation or guilt-finding in any way, shape, or, form, I found the HS by His timing of my faith to increase right after I was baptized by water--'it's not complicated.'

Scripture explains the simplicity of the believer's receiving of the Holy Spirit, which is, simply, "through faith."

King James Bible -- That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Two things happen 'through faith,' a lot more to but two things, again, no legalism in becoming Christian or with Holy Spirit, just a choice made, and, it's a choice as well as an understanding, that God both gives all a measure of faith and increases our faith thriugh His leading, andz our following.

Read Eph. 2:8,9, too

This is all because of His grace too, given us, of His Son on cross.

You are exactly right about the tongues thing; even a footnote in the bible says it simply means speaking other known languages, not the mashugana " Christians" do at their churches sometimes.

John baptized for the repentance of sins; Christ baptized to cast the Holy Spirit into the body because the temple ( the body,) has been purified through the baptism and can therefore harbor the Holy Spirit.

It is only after baptism this can happen - and yes you have to be baptized in ALL 3 NAMES of the Trinity.

Jahova was the Father - and those who recognized that at that time could be baptized in his name.
Jesus was the Son - and many were baptized in his name; even after being baptized by John the Baptist.

The Holy Spirit is 2nd Coming Christ whom Jesus said would come in his name in the book of John. Coming in someone's name has never meant having the same exact name; no it means coming in that person's will or purpose.

Therefore, the Holy Spirit will have a name on the earth; that name is the name that will grant salvation in our time.

You do have to be baptized in that name, but you have to find out accurately who it is first.

There are a lot of false prophets out there, and many who proclaim themselves to be Jesus Christ or in his likeness;

The bible specifies clearly and accurately whom the actual 2nd coming Christ is; so many things even the false prophets aren't aware of because they do not know the truth of God.

Pray that you find the Holy Spirit so you may be baptized and receive salvation.

A catholic girl expressed to me that the she doesn't understand why the Bible " stopped" in respects to time. She meant why everyone is still stuck on Jesus if we have surpassed Jesus's time.

We have surpassed Jesus's time; and this is why Jesus promised another Christ for our time, whom is referred to as the " Holy Spirit," all throughout the NT and especially Revelations.

Seek and you will find.

CC'ers. if you have experienced the dynamic release of the Holy Spirit, please post a little testimony. They are very useful to helping new people who do not know what to expect.
In 2009 I was in my work truck at lunchtime reading my bible, which is what I did every day for 2 yrs prior to this. I was in the book of Acts and came to the part about the Holy Spirit baptism. I put the bible down and thought, this sounds good I think I need this. So I closed my eyes and bowed my head and prayed to the Lord. I said simply "Lord Jesus please baptise me with your Holy Spirit". I kept my eyes closed for a few minutes waiting for whatever was going to happen. I was thinking of fire over me and such things like that. I didn't want to ruin whatever was going to happen but after a little while I peeked and opened one eye. The Lord Jesus was not sitting in the seat next to me like I had thought He might be... I was really sure that something amazing was going to happen... So I opened both eyes and thought, oh well, maybe I'm not ready or something.

I put my tool belt on, put a dip of chew in my mouth (skoal, I think) and put an extra can in my tool belt and got out of the truck to go to work. I got around the front of the truck when I heard an audible voice in my head say (loudly and with authority) "Spit out the poison." I was very startled but not scared. I spit out the chew and threw the extra can away. I went to work thinking about those words, spit out the poison. I wanted to obey that voice to the very best of my ability. I realized, or thought, that spitting out the poison wasn't just about chewing tobacco. It was about "spitting out" all the things that I allowed into my life that weren't of God. I stopped watching TV except for sermons and christian shows. I only listened to christian music and preaching on the radio. I stopped reading novels and only read the bible and christian books. I was completely "immersed" in the things of God. All my thoughts and meditations were on prayer and the bible. I was doing my best to spit out the poison and be perfect before God. And I still couldn't do it. I still had to ask for His Help...

And the Lord did help me "spit out the poison". He showed me that my own efforts were still woefully short of what His Standard is. He showed me that even though I expended a tremendous amount of energy to be "righteous" before Him, I was nowhere close to making the grade. He helped me make it the "rest of the way", lol...
