peter, ( mjoo7, same person ), no one is saying that we should not strive for righteous behavior, but to say, by a Biblical definition , that one can be perfect is not a true statement. do you keep the standards of the Sermon on the Mount 24/7. no!, then, therefore, no perfection. do we strive to do good, yes! do we always hit the mark? no.
To strive for righteousness when you don't believe you can be righteous is the pinnacle of hypocrisy. Why do you apply the world's definition to perfection and not what the LORD defines as being perfect before Him? Is that because you are carnal minded?

43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

I have not done any of those things. but, have I known to do good, and did so, in every situation, which is what James said , to him who knows to do good, and does not do so, to him it is sin, then by definition I sin, you sin, everyone does. some more than others, but that is not the point. this makes it impossible to truthfully say " I am perfect ".

"Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you." -2 Corinthians 13:11

Not only is it possible to be perfect in this life, but it is our calling, in works and in faith.
Sir.. you have set your heart to believe.. now let no one hinder you.. are you perfect? they will say.. as to accuse you..Answer to no man.. but strive with that belief recieve all things in love and Truth and hold fast.

You have misinterpreted those verses and sadly, you continue to suffer from a terminal case of self righteousness (1 John 1:8-10). :(
Dan, just like most in the world, you use 1 John 1:8-10 out of context and cause it to contradict many parts of the Bible. As to your "self righteous" insult, I don't claim any of my own righteousness, I have none of my own to boast on; only Christ who lives in me may I stand tall, all of the glory goes to him I seek not my own.

I have not done any of those things.
Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. Deut 18:13

but, have I known to do good, and did so, in every situation, which is what James said , to him who knows to do good, and does not do so, to him it is sin, then by definition I sin, you sin, everyone does.
"By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil." Prov 16:6

"...and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him. Lev 5:18

James 5:19-20
19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; 20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

some more than others, but that is not the point. this makes it impossible to truthfully say " I am perfect ".
Who said you are to say you are perfect? But to say that nobody can be perfect before the LORD is to usurp the instruction given to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands? Eccl 5:6

For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. Isa 32:6

O yeah, what is perfect depends on the situation.

1 Corinthians 1:

25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Perfect in the context of the OP does NOT mean FLAWLESS! When applied to people it means approximately:

BE ALL YOU ARE CAPABLE OF BEING WITH GOD'S HELP.

When God applies it to Himself, it does mean FLAWLESS.

I'm flawless at being a fool for Christ, no problem.

2 Corinthians 12:

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
