I frequently encounter people online who are interested in reading some of
the Bible but don't know where to begin.

Well; I suggest the little books of Ruth and Esther. They're brief and they're
entertaining. And afterwards; maybe just enough chapters of Matthew and
Luke to get a first-hand look at the Christmas story. For some people: that's
more than enough Bible to satisfy their curiosity.

Q: Where can I get a Bible?

A: Bibles can be purchased at any well-stocked book store like Barnes & Noble.

Christian book stores are another source and can usually be found listed in
the Yellow Pages along with regular types of book stores.

If you're okay with used books, you might prefer shopping for a Bible in a
second hand store like Good Will and Salvation Army.

Amazon dot com is a really good source for Bibles.

For a first timer, I always suggest the book of John. Dollar stores have bibles in my area for $1.

Yes, you can get a bible just about anywhere. Probably pick up one from Goodwill for a quarter. I stole a Gideon bible from my hotel room in downtown Los Angeles in my youth.

Half Price Books is another good place to find a Bible. Many times, they have Study Bibles in stock at very reasonable prices.

You know what's sad? People here in America will buy a Bible for a single dollar, take it home, but never open it. While people in China and North Korea would give all they own, and even their lives, for a Bible.

If you had never read the bible and wanted to start it would be like never having eaten and then being presented with a huge wonderful meal.

When I was in that situation I was simply overwhelmed. Looking back to that time it seems to me the best answer would have been to have a wise person listen to me and guide me to what supplied my need.

I do think that it must be kept in mind that God gives us all about himself in the first five books of the bible, it even tells us about Christ and His blood of salvation. But with no knowledge of the original Hebrew God gave that information in, without knowing ancient history so you understand the people God used to explain it is impossible to understand. Imagine reading about our people today if you didn't know anything about our world. Just the computer talk would make it all a mystery.

Having been in the mission field, I like to advise new Christians to start reading Proverbs. That is like a programmed course into the mind of God. That gets us on track with the line upon line of morals, respect and the general mindset to properly serve God. One chapter of that per day and start reading the gospels.
