John 3:1
Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.2 He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him."
Nicodemus wasn't afraid to say to Jesus Himself that he believed. He came under the cover of darkness to hide his identity from the people!! So that people didn't know that he, of all people, Nicodemus, was going to Jesus. He was afraid to associate his identity with Jesus.
Luke 9:26
Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
Darkness leaves room for sin and an anonymous identity is a hiding place where people can't see you.
