Not all Catholics are Christians. You dont become a Christian by becoming Catholic. You become a Christian by receiving the Word of God, and being made alive in the Spirit, and following Christ. It requires a spiritual birth, we are birthed into the kingdom, we don't just join. You need to be made alive from the dead, it takes the resurrection power of God in Christ to make you a true believer. God draws many by His Holy Spirit and He works in many unbelievers to bring them to the place of repentance, but until they have repented and received Christ, they are dead in their sins.
Well you become Christian by accepting the Faith and being baptized. That's one of the many areas on which we will probably differ.

Christianity is not based on religion and practices its not about church. Christianity is about Jesus Christ. Any customs or practices can never save you only Jesus..

But the fact is that there has never been a christianity without customs or practices. Just make sure they are biblical.

I believe Jesus' purspose was not about customs and traditions.
Jesus kept and walked in all the traditions of the law and the prophets and Jesus' purposes indeed created several customs and traditions for His followers. Paul reiterated that christians should hold fast to the traditions that were delivered to them either by word or by epistle. He praised the corinthians that they had so well kept the ordinances that he had delivered to them.
2Thes.2

[15] Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
1Cor.11

[1] Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
[2] Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
If you are of the idea that customs and traditions is something bad, unspiritual or evil then that is unscriptural.

Customs and traditions are good and edifying if it is clearly based n the bible. but since some traditions are very unbiblical and blasphemous like idolatry of with which we christians should not tolerate because these traditions are not leading people to Jesus and nowadays most of us are really living with the standards of this traditions and practices that we forget our first love. I do understand your point brother and i apologize if I said something wrong..

Love you guys! :)

Customs and traditions we find everywhere, also among those who claim to have none. But it is nothing wrong with customs and tradition in and by themselves. Well, like I said: Just make sure they are biblical. All good, over and out!

Amen!!!Praise God for Martin Luther whose efforts made the Word of God available to the people and who were held captive because they did not have access to the bible , who were held in bondage to lies about purgatory and were forced to pay indulgences (money for salvation) to priests who themselves were corrupt and immoral.
Praise God for the blood of the martyrs who when they refused to give assent to anything less than the Word of the Living God, were mercilessly slaughtered en mass - some of whom were women who were stripped naked and placed in iron chairs over fires where they were fried to death.
Let us not forget that we have the truth because of the sacrifice and blood of others who would not bow down to nothing less than an anti - Christ system.

My Hope is built on nothing less,
Than Jesus Christ - His righteousness.
No Merit of my own I claim,
But soley lean on Jesus Name,
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

May want to praise Johannes Gutenberg (a Catholic) and his printing press which made books go from costing you a large fortune to only costing you a small fortune. Of course if you mean translation you may want to look into various Old English translations done in the 700's AD and of literacy in Europe up until the 17th century (look at how many people could read and what language they read in).

who were held in bondage to lies about purgatory and were forced to pay indulgences (money for salvation) to priests who themselves were corrupt and immoral.
No one was forced to pay for indulgences (by the way indulgences aren't salvation tickets). They payed for them of their own freewill, which was itself an abuse of indulgences.

Praise God for the blood of the martyrs who when they refused to give assent to anything less than the Word of the Living God,
Indeed, I praise God for men such as St. Thomas More and others like him were executed by tyrannical Protestant princes when they refused to bow to this new religion. See what I did there? Propaganda is easy to turn around so I suggest you don't use it.

were mercilessly slaughtered en mass - some of whom were women who were stripped naked and placed in iron chairs over fires where they were fried to death.
I do believe that was an execution used for witches by both sides. But I can share a particularly pleasant punishment that was used to execute Catholic Priests in England. First the priest would be dragged behind a horse to the place of execution, then he would be hanged until unconscious, then after he had awoken his genitals would be cut off and shown to them, then he would be disemboweled, beheaded, and his body would be chopped into four pieces to be displayed throughout the city.

All this done under the guise of "protecting the people from popery".

You're 23... right. Likely under 18.

You can't spell S-a-t-a-n if your life depended on it.

Your grammar is equal to a 7 year old.

Your intellect and maturity are nil.

This is your first and only post.

Congratulations, you failed to cause a big fuss and hysteria.
You may return to browsing foreign porn and watching reruns of Teletubbies.

I invite everyone to not respond to this kid, and perhaps to allow this entire ludicrous thread to die out in the archives.

Thank you. ;)

Oi, quite a thread. To speak factually, both sides got blood on their hands. The Roman System has killed many in the name of Christ in the pretense of Holy War and they have adopted very torturous means of interrogation to the point where people would actually confess to crimes they did not commit just for it to end. The Protestant system has killed many as well, most noticeably "heretics", usually by what they learned from the Roman Church, and innocent women who were accused of being witches. The Roman Church has a lot of erred doctrines and idolatries, and so does the Protestant Church, 40,000 versions.. The Roman Church has the image of Jesus, the Protestant Church has the image of the cross. Idk, to me they both aren't good. Catholics has warred against Protestants, Baptists vs Pentecostals, Trinitarians vs Oneness, Eternal Security vs Conditional Security, so on and so on and so on. There is absolutely no Unity, the very Unity the Lord prayed for His disciples, that we would be one as He is one with the Father.

Isn't that a problem? Even in this thread Protestants and Catholics war against each other, traditions vs faith, father vs preacher, catechism vs bible, yet they both claim to serve the Lord Christ in His name, but there is so much division and fighting, so much conflict in doctrines and practices, so much confusion in the name and identity of the Lord.

We either rely on the Pope as Vicar of Christ, or our own understanding of the Scriptures. Why don't we instead ask the Spirit what's true, since He is the Spirit of Truth, the true Vicar of Christ, and the Breather of the Scriptures? Doesn't Proverbs 1 promise that if we turn unto the Wisdom of God, She'll make Her words known to us and pour Her Spirit upon us?

That's all I have to say concerning this topic.

As a Catholic I am very glad that the administrative staff posted this concern, because there are a lot of misconceptions particularly the one of Mary.

First, Mary is not worshiped by Catholics. We pray for her intercession. So in Scripture we see Christ obeying Mary several times because he is her son and a son always obeys her Mother. This is also true in Heaven. Christ was as much God on while on Earth as he is in Heaven and He is ultimately the one that answers our prayers and gives us grace, but Mary is there to pray for us on our behalf which magnifies the prayer itself. That is why in the "Hail Mary" we pray at the end "Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death." We do not say anything along the lines of "we worship you, or we exalt you...etc" to glorify her.

Second, "mother of God." It is very important that the English translation of the Bible is incomparable to the Greek in terms of literal accuracy. And we all know of course the New Testament scriptures were originally written in Greek. This controversy has been around since St. Cyril and Nestorius. St. Cyril, writing in Greek and Latin, and the Greek version of the Bible uses the term "Theotokos" to refer to Mary. This directly translated is "God-bearer." Now, Nestorius was against this because he understood this as meaning, that she bore God, as in God the Father (remember God is three in one, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). This is understandable since it is illogical for her to bear what created her. So there are three persons in one. But rather she is God the Son bearer. So Nestorius wanted to change the term to "Kristotokos" which of course is Christ-bearer. However, because Christ is also God (consubstantial with the Father - Nicene Creed) and Mary gave birth to Christ she is called "Mother of God." In conclusion, Mary is Mother of God (not of the Father), but Mother of God the Son, the incarnate Word.

So in conclusion our English language unfortunately is not sufisticated enough to verbalize such complex theology, but that is as Christian we must always try to get to the bottom of answers even if it means challenging ourselves by looking at historical writing and translations of Scripture.

My goal as a Catholic on this forum is not convert, people can decide for themselves what they need to do by following their conscience, so whether something is considered "heresy" or not it should be kept to provoke discussion. God gave us free will, and we need to make use of this free will because it can help us get closer to Him.

God Bless and I do enjoy this site for prayer and discussion, very useful resource.

You can build. 10,000 new Churches a week, feed everybody on Earth..and Still not be saved from The Lake of Fire.....because you refused to follow the exact salvation plan Jesus and Apostles taught in the Only Church Jesus started in The First Century......Sorry The RCC is not that Church..
This is why atheists, pagans and other religions probably wont be converted because of your logic. You keep acting like protestants shouldn't have to do any good if you don't you will not get others to convert to Christianity so you can save them from this lake of fire. You do understand when the Catholic church gives aid its also helping to bring Christianity to parts of the world. Or wait that's right Catholics probably aren't Christian to you. lol

weird how someone on this forum when bringing up the history of the Catholic and protestant churches only brings up a few protestant crimes like burning witches but brings up way more catholic ones. Also saying that Catholics are still trying to war against protestants on here doesn't seem very true look at the name of this forum all this type of subjects keep being posted. Is it wrong for one to defend themselves against false accusations?

I like how all your answers are very factual while your accusers use only their opinion and very misleading beliefs that are mostly from hysteria. Weird how even though you always provide facts it just doesn't change their minds. lol Also don't know why protestants always bring up Catholics killing people I mean look at England they were protestant and took over many parts of the world treating the natives of the countries they stole like animals. Also look at what protestants did to America tried to wipe out an entire race while Catholics just tried to convert central Americans when the Spanish came to central America.

This is not a thread for Catholics to defend their customs and traditions. It simply states what the owner and moderators believe and what will not be tolerated. That being said it has gone on for a very very long time with no progression.
