The Nazi collaborator Archbishop Stepinac (right) and the Vatican representative to fascist Croatia, Abbot Marcone (left). Croatia has recently renamed a village in Krajina after Stepinac. Marcone was Pavelic's confessor and Stepinac was convicted of war crimes after the war. Several members of his clergy were involved in the genocide at Jasenovac - notably the Franciscan priest, Pater Miroslav Filipovic, who was one of the commandants of the camp.

I did a google search for the Catholic Church killing people for reading the bible. Guess what? Nothing. Not surprising. Next, i did a search for Catholic Church forbidding people to read the bible. Apparently this myth started because Churches used to lock up the bible after Mass. This was not so people couldn't read it, it was so it wouldn't be stolen. Most churches only had one handwritten bible. See how easy some of you want to believe the myths about the church

In spite of the zeal with which the hierarchy sought to destroy it due to its alleged mistranslations and erroneous commentary, there still exist about 150 manuscripts, complete or partial, containing the translation in its revised form. From this, one may easily infer how widely diffused it was in the fifteenth century. For this reason the Wycliffites in England were often designated by their opponents as "Bible men."

In my elementary school years, both my friends and my husband's friends who were catholic were NOT allowed to possess or read a bible. In those days we were all given a New Testament, and my husband gave his little catholic friend his little New Testament. He took it home and his mother ripped it up. They were not allowed to possess the bible in any form. I have spoken to catholics about that over the years and they were taught that they needed to only hear the word of God as divvied out by their church.

That is not God's intent for us! We are to know the word!

So the RCC took it upon itself to control people's lives and set itself up as authority, when God has not given the Church authority over people...but people who are Christians ARE the Church, and we have Jesus' authority. The RCC has set itself up as THE CHURCH, when there is no such entity apart from the people of God globally.

The most notable Middle English Bible translation, Wycliffe's Bible (1383), based on the Vulgate, was banned by the Oxford Synod in 1408.

In the late 14th century, John Wycliffe produced the first complete English language Bible — often called Wycliffe's Bible. His New Testament was completed in 1380 and the Old Testament a few years later. It is thought that a large portion of the Old Testament was actually translated by Nicholas Hereford. Some 30 copies of this Bible survive, despite the fact that it was banned. From the time of King Richard II until the time of the English Reformation, Lollards who read Wycliffe's Bible were persecuted. Wycliffe's Bible was revised in the last years of the 14th century, perhaps by John Purvey. This edition was also banned and became even more popular than the first. Some 130 copies exist, including some belonging to the British royal family. All dated copies are dated before the ban.

Throughout Christian history, there has been many attempts to keep the Bible from hands of the common man. The Catholic Church was the biggest among these, with Pope Innocent III in 1199 banning the common man from having personal access to a bible, the Council of Tourlouse in 1229 ("Canon 14. We prohibit also that the laity should be permitted to have the books of the Old or New Testament; unless anyone from motive of devotion should wish to have the Psalter or the Breviary for divine offices or the hours of the blessed Virgin; but we most strictly forbid their having any translation of these books."), the Council of Terragona of 1234, the 1408 Synod of Oxford, England, Pope Pius IV in the Index of Trent in 1559, Pope Clement XI in 1713, Pope Pius VI in 1794, Pope Pius VIII in 1829, Pope Gregory XVI in 1844, Pope Pius IX in 1866, Pope Leo XIII in 1903, 1918 Canon Law, etc all prohibit/ban bibles or the reading of them or translating into the native language.

The Council of Tarragona of 1234, in its second canon, ruled that:
"No one may possess the books of the Old and New Testaments in the Romance language, and if anyone possesses them he must turn them over to the local bishop within eight days after promulgation of this decree, so that they may be burned lest, be he a cleric or a layman, he be suspected until he is cleared of all suspicion."

In 1731 Count Leopold Anton von Firmian – Archbishop of Salzburg as well as its temporal ruler – embarked on a savage persecution of the Lutherans living in the rural regions of Salzburg. As well expelling tens of thousands of Protestant Salzburgers, the Archbishop ordered the wholesale seizure and burning of all Protestant books and Bibles.

Martin Luther's German translation of the Bible was burned in Catholic-dominated parts of Germany in 1624, by order of the Pope

In October 1526 William Tyndale's English translation of the New Testament was burned in London by Cuthbert Tunstal, Bishop of London.

I'm sorry Nancy, my grandmother had a family bible when she was a little girl and she still has it! I don't know where ya'll get this from. We always had a family bible in my house as a kid.I was encouraged to read the bible. I have been Catholic my whole life and just don't experience this stuff ya'll say the Church does

Now mwc68 with you not walking in the Light with Jesus Christ your sins cannot be cleansed by His Blood and if you die you will enter into the Lake of Fire mwc68.

Its not what you want the Truth to be mwc68 that matters, its what God says is the Truth that matters.

All you do mwc68 is teach the Roman Catholic Church and Mary are greater than God by reciting the lies of the Roman Catholic Church. As long as you keep putting down God and elevate the Roman Catholic Church and Mary above God you will encounter people who will hate you for this.

Repented, born again, 'washed by the blood of the Lamb', definitely "came to the faith" etc etc etc etc.

I have tried valiantly to find some logic in that train of thought. Without success.

In one sense, I agree with you. To me, Mary was not the 'mother of God'.

However, I presume that you believe she was the mother of Yeshua and that Yeshua was God,
How then would she not be the Mother of God ?

Was Yeshua God ? Was Mary Yeshua's mother ?
