1 Corinthians 8

1Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3But whoever loves God is known by God.[SUP]a[/SUP]
4So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

7But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. 8But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

9Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? 11So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.

I find Halloween a time for my kids to practice their imagination and pretend to be a hero or princess. A time to show off to the world they are something heroic or great. One day they will be an adult and no longer feel heroic or great most of the time. Plus they like candy and so do I lol. Obviously. my kids will learn this day is a day to get free candy and that's all. We do the trunk and treat at church's because I do not trust people in town. I do not allow my kids to dress up as satanic things. Which in my opinion is things connected to devil type stuff. For example, I think a ghost is okay or a zombie. This is one reason why I do not watch any satanic type movies. I am okay with watching ghost, zombies, crazy delusional people, or even scary movies where the hero and his faith in God makes him a powerful opponent to evil. Fear teaches us how to manage fear. Fear also teaches us to trust our internal influences and to react under fear. The more we are influenced by fear the better the possibility of us to react in a fearful situation. But obviously we can only experience fear for so long or we would all go crazy. For example I use to be afraid of monsters as a kid, but as I grew older my experience to this fear only become less scary and eventually I gained enough knowledge to understand these monsters were not real.

I also remember my childhood with raising my kids. We trick or treated and I never once got my God mixed up with the belief of Halloween. BECAUSE I WAS TAUGHT THE TRUTH FROM GODS WORD. So all I saw was free candy and a way to express my personality through a costume.

lol, I'm not sure if this is supposed to be satire or a genuine misunderstanding but no. lol I'll try and elucidate for you. It's encouraging a member who seems to have seen one thing exclusively for the sake of a claim, to look through 6 pages and read the developed arguments and experiences to gain a broader perspective on what a few members have actually partaken in with the discussion.
well that's interesting

you write the mods about allowing old threads to be brought up...even from 5 or 6 years ago...and tell us they allow it

I answered you that they do allow it, but is it always the right thing to do?

now here you are giving someone what for because they repeat something from a current thread

makes me wonder about your motives

maybe you should just post and not try to control everyone else

I don't celebrate halloween...but I certainly make note of Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving....

it is guaranteed that some members here will tell me I am going to hell because of that

so, it starts to be ridiculous

I'm not sure that you understand the meaning and the context of origional post you're referring to here. It's got nothing to do with complaining about a repeated comment nor is it a time issue. It's illustrating the fact that if someone says 'it's not about the candy' yet puts repeated emphasis on it, that's what I was drawing attention too in a contradiction of self proclaimed values about halloween. I will happily continue to post whether you like old threads being raised on or not, whether you want to jump in for your friends or not, is also your prerogative - either way it has nothing to do with controlling anyone. God speed!

what does halloween have to do with Jesus or the bible? i dont get it. is it a biblical holy day that was meant to be set aside and kept holy?
Easter i get, its a pagan day that was mixed with a Christian day. Christmas i get, a day meant to honor the Son yet the day has been taken over by greed, materialism, "black" friday sells.

People eat candy, dress up, watch scary movies, EVERY SINGLE DAY. It doesn't have to be a holiday or special occasion to dress up or eat candy or watch movies.
There's people who are non believers indulging in this and then there's Christians who are supposed to aspire to a higher being every day, irrespective of event. We're inspired through the word of the Lord about the sort of movies to watch, how to look after our minds and bodies with what we put in them and ensuring we dress for Jesus. It's just days like today stand out so much that they invite us Christians to examine our place and our role in the world when so much of it is doesn't acknowledge our Maker and justifies it through cracks.

Jesus "partook" of many undesirable things.. He drank wine at a wedding. Sat and talked to a prostitute.. even did miracles on the sabbath.. While he probably wouldn't dress up or watch movies, He WOULD find some way to bring glory from it to God.. JMO

Those analogies don't describe the same thing as there's nothing undesirable about sitting and talking with a prostitute to inspire them to eternal life, nor showing His power from His Father from turning water into wine in John 2:1-11 and the subsequent miracles he performed. All those examples bring glory to God
. Even if you ignore the origins, partaking in the day with aforementioned agonistic activities is not consistent with the Christian ethos.

Yet it's strange you single ME out to bag on about the candy, when several others here have also said THEY celebrate it for the candy.. :/ Why don't you get on them also, since we keep "putting emphasis" on the candy part of halloween?

You just need to accept the fact that some of us DO celebrate it, and let it go.

That's because most of the world is into the more material parts of Christmas and Easter. The eggs, Easter bunny and candy.. Christmas trees and extravagant ornaments, etc... But not everyone treats those holidays like vendors do, with commercialized everything.

Christians don't celebrate Halloween because they find nothing biblical in it. Christians celebrate Christmas because they put all their emphasis on the birth of Christ the same with Easter. Although yes many are aware of the pagan roots. They'll mention it but will say they they focus on the birth, death and Resurrection of Christ so that's why they celebrate those days. My church celebrates Thanksgiving because they can make it something about giving Jesus and God thanks for our lives and that is where the origin of our gratitude should be in. Why my church celebrates Valentines Day is beyond me, that day can go away for all I care.

Is it ok to go to a football or baseball or basketball game since it is not in the bible? Is it forbidden?

I actually had nothing to do with your posts at all until about 3/4 way through the thread, I chose never to respond to you. I put my thoughts out and there and replied to many other people. I'm sorry if you feel like you're being singled out over this element, but when you put repeated emphasis on it so i thought i'd respond. This is a discussion forum, if you want to keep putting you opinions on the table, expect a replies in return. Telling members to mind their own business and to let it go isn't a viable choice, be prepared to be disagreed with and try to take something away from it all.

Oh I'm fine lauren, thankyou for your concern, but you've repeatedly posted to me, so I thought should respond to you. Christian discussions believe it or not, evolve globally, they're not specific to the people you're on the same soil with. That being said, I did love America so much in the past 3 years, I'll be back in 2017 - fun times ahead. Haven't been to Canada though, so I might put that on my bucket list!

some people won't watch any movies at all

does that make them a better Christian than you?

how do we aspire to a higher 'being' every day and what is a higher 'being'?

I would say that how we treat people is far more important than what kind of an outward show we put on

wouldn't you?

well, many Christians won't touch wine and won't go near a prostitute

that's all very religious sounding, but if one looks around in these forums, it will be seen that there are disagreements just about...make that every...aspect of life in Christ

seems like you are picking here and I cannot see any good coming from it

[h=1]1 Corinthians 9[/h]19 Although I am a free man and not anyone’s slave, I have made myself a slave to everyone, in order to win more people. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win Jews; to those under the law, like one under the law—though I myself am not under the law—to win those under the law. 21 To those who are without that law, like one without the law—not being without God’s law but within Christ’s law—to win those without the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, in order to win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I may by every possible means save some. 23 Now I do all this because of the gospel, so I may become a partner in its benefits.

I wish I could hold a poll and ask 100 average people religious or not and ask do you sacrifice candy to your man made idol that you worship or do devil type worship on Halloween. Because my expectation would be either 100% NO or close to it. So do we act super over religious in the eyes of sinners or do we disregard pettiness in order to reach people who are sinners. Jesus ate with sinners and hung out with sinners. Obviously, we still hold on to Gods word. But in all we do speak of God.
