I cant stand these phrases:

1. "God knows my heart"
2. " Only God can judge me"
3. " If that's your conviction"
4. "That's legalistic"
5. <The one verse wonder>

One: God knows that our hearts are sinful, deceitful, and the start to all our troubles in life if we don't guard it. What kind of excuse is this really? God knows I really wanted to do this instead of what He wants me to do...God desires obedience. Stop using this as an excuse and repent.

Two: I much rather have someone in my church or other godly people save my soul from hell as the Bible puts it then to have God judge me on judgment day...when did having God judge become a good thing? This is a scary thing

Three: This bothers me when it isn't my conviction, but God's Word that plainly says something. Like it should be mine, yours, and everyone's conviction. So only I should be convicted to love my neighbor as myself? Really?

Four: No it's called being obedient. Would I be legalistic deciding not to steal, covet, be angry, lie, or commit adultery because God said not to? Didn't think so. (Of course anything can become legalistic if you think God thinks highly of you for doing something that He requires anyway. Or feeling that you can earn your way to heaven for being more obedient than the next.) If it's legalistic majority of the time it's something you don't want to do because it requires dying to yourself.

Five: Just because you have one or two verse to support your opinion doesn't make it biblical. What of the hundreds of other verses that don't support it? That's like me holding up a sign with the word "read" one can say it's past tense the other could say future, both are right until I but it in a sentence " I read that book last summer." Then we can both know what it really means. Same with verses, line upon line.

*I apologize for the major ranting, haha*

My all time blacklisted phrase is

God told me to tell you....

You will quickly and unceremoniously hear me tell you what God told me to tell people who tell me that

...or something like that...

another fav is 'I plead the blood' which, I think, is supposed to ward off evil spirits like a rabbit's foot or something

I agree with all but the fourth one. But I can see how it can be misused as an excuse for licentiousness rather than pointing out actual examples of legalism. Biblical principles are timeless truths for all ages while applications will vary by culture, time period, stage in life, etc. Legalism is when you try to enforce your applications or personal convictions on others by giving them the same weight as Biblical truth.

For example, modesty is a Biblical principle. Women not wearing pants is an application of that principle. But that's not going to work for women who are athletes or in some rural Asian cultures where only the prostitutes wear dresses. It would be equally wrong for them to say that all women should not wear skirts in the name of modesty. Modesty is good. Declaring your own definition of modesty as the only "godly" way to do it is wrong.

Well, although this post really seems to be more about a reaction to some of the OP's personal buttons having been pushed, I'll pretend to accept the stated intent, and consider some of my pet peeves for awhile.
Do you realize how you have completely dismissed me as emotional and reactionary and belittled my intellect? This was a thoughtful conversation inspired by my exasperation of certain phrases being misused time and time again.

Yes, it does make one wonder why The Big Fella couldn't make His wishes clear and unambiguous.

What phrases do you want to seen stricken from Christian conversation?
Politically correct drones refuse to say, "In the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit" and instead replace it with, "In the name of the Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer." This is just p/c garbage and an attempt to emasculate God, specifically Jesus. This crap needs to be stricken.

I thought "drones" were horrific weapons employed by Yank terrorists to inflict massive "collateral damage" on innocent, non-combatant, men, women, children and babies in Afghanistan, Pakistan and all over the Middle East ?

That's excellent, Ember. Thank you for sharing. Politically correct drones think they're speaking eloquence but in fact are merely disturbing the environment with their low continuous humming sounds. :)

No, however I do recognize this is how you perceive it... indicating that, perhaps, some more sensitive buttons got pushed.

OK .... I acknowledge that we are straying way Off-Topic (and I will desist) but are you really saying that 'drones' are NOT

" horrific weapons employed by Yank terrorists to inflict massive "collateral damage" on innocent, non-combatant, men, women, children and babies in Afghanistan, Pakistan and all over the Middle East ?

Words are symbols of thought and Christians ought to choose what they say and how they say it with that in mind. Folks outside the church may not have the same image of terms we take for granted in the church assembly. If you sue them be ready to explain them.

When I read the OP I understood that the objection was to trite phrases being used as a substitute for thinking.

I did not think she was saying that those phrases have NO legitimate place in conversation.

I enjoy humor as much as anyone but not as a substitute for considering a real issue.

I think that openly sharing that certain behaviors irritate us is quite legitimate and I don't consider it wining.

How can we minister to each other as the 'one another' commandments call us to do; if we are not permitted to share our feelings?
