Even though this thread is old the OP still stands. This thread was not created to bash the CoC or any other organization. Why can people not comprehend that?

I am talking about the CoC that comes out of Independence Missouri, who believe that Joseph Smith rewrote Rev., who believe in Works needed for salvation, who believe that the NEW JERUSALEM will drop out of the sky into their town in Missouri, Who believe the Armenian doctrine is also the way to go..... etc. etc. etc.

Yes, there are good people that where saved by faith in Jesus Christ before they were told they had to have works to complete their salvation. I hope so anyways, because CoC of Missouri is leading thousands if not millions down the primrose path to HELL.

Yes, we have some of these churches around here. They say they are different but they are still associated with Headquarters at Missouri.

Yes, there are some Churches that have actually changed their names and have also changed their teachings and beliefs. Kudos to them,,I think it is great!

But, in truth there are some that only changed the building, the name but not the association.

I think you've confused the Churches of Christ with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.... otherwise known as the Mormon Church. Their leader was Joseph Smith.

Night and day different churches than the ones we are discussing.

God "guided, guarded, and directed" me to find that one, and "gave me an uneventful journey" to get there.
...and He always brought me back at the "next appointed time"...

and, to be scriptural, it HAS to be "two songs, a prayer, and a scripture reading".....

Good ol' 728b..... There is a God.... He is alive!!

It kind of blows my mind how any CoC person can state dozens of the exact same things any other CoC does, anywhere in the country, and yet they all claim they have no affiliation with any of the others. Just coincidence, I guess.

Very frighteningly similar to the Catholics.

I've never done this, but we have some CoC friends in Huntsville who go to one of these every year.

Some of you won't understand... some of you will. I grew up on much of this. I actually just cried a little, watching this.

oh, good grief. How 'bout you go back up about a half page and read my description in a nutshell about how the Churches of Christ came to be.... see if you see ANYTHING in there about Joseph Smith... I'll wait.

While I was waiting, I did a little Wiki search for you.... here are some highlights.

Now I feel like a really GOOD Berean......

Joseph Smith Jr. (December 23, 1805 – June 27, 1844) was an American religious leader and founder of Mormonism and the Latter Day Saint movement. When he was twenty-four, Smith published the Book of Mormon. By the time of his death fourteen years later, he had attracted tens of thousands of followers and founded a religious culture that continues to the present.

The same year he organized the Church of Christ, calling it a restoration of the early Christian church. Members of the church were later called "Latter Day Saints", or "Mormons", and in 1838, Smith announced a revelation that renamed the church as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

In 1831, Smith and his followers moved west, planning to build a communalistic American Zion. They first gathered in Kirtland, Ohio, and established an outpost in Independence, Missouri, which was intended to be Zion's "center place".

The CoC(denomination) is a cult. I live in between two of them. They preach more on water than grace. They are the hardcore CoC churches, where they’re the only ones going to heaven.

I said those two churches are the hardcore ones. No amount grace is sufficient, unless you are baptized. If one is not baptized in the water, they go to hell. We are saved by grace through faith, not grace plus water submersion.

They preach water baptism as a necessity to one's salvation. I hope and pray not all CoC preach this.

I did not say all CoC preach this, but the two in I am in the midst of do. I don't know what they preach in other areas.

Hi SG,

The idea of what a "church" is, has been changing throughout history.

It changed faster as people began reading the Bible.

Different groups formed, the reformation, and then the further divisions of the modern era.

Each group doing what they believed to be right according to the Bible, generally speaking.

----

The Bible outlines, and gives examples of what the operation of the congregation should be like with elders/bishops, and others.

This is what I believe that each congregation should be like, if they can.

----

But one size or shape won't fit everybody will it?

We have to be free from the Law, and free from the laws that men put on us in the name of Jesus.

The most beautiful thing is that we can read and study for ourselves, find the truth, know the truth.

And what is the truth about the church? Is it the denomination that you belong to that saves you? The congregation that you are a "member" of that saves you? Is it because you use instruments in the worship services, or don't use them that saves you?

Lord have mercy on the souls of men, "My grace is sufficient for thee."

It's your personal relationship with Jesus and the Holy Spirit that saves you, not the congregation you attend.

Provided that the congregation you choose holds the Bible as the highest authority of all, and acts to establish itself according to the examples given there and teaches the truth.

-----

I see that people have been moving toward the light of God's Word for hundreds of years now. Closer and closer to the ideal example set by the apostles.

Breaking away from the structured, ritualistic, pagan RCC.

Returning to a basic Bible outline/example for the government of the congregation.

-----

But just because they have the structure of the government of the congregation correct, doesn't mean that every individual congregation has their act together.

I know what you are saying, about the CoC, I preached at several non instrument congregations for 30 years.

(But not on the use of instruments in worship, a sore topic, for those OUTSIDE, of our congregations.)

Read the following words slowly.

This thread has nothing to do with the Mormon Church. The Church of Christ is in no way, shape or form part of the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Thank you.

Putting aside the fact that this thread is 6 YEARS OLD, your comment is pretty close-minded and bigoted. There are people from almost EVERY denomination who think theirs is the "true church". Not all CofC churches believe or teach that. Some do. Not all CofC's condemn instrumental music. Some do. I would be interested in learning what your reasons are for being so quick to write off a whole denomination of followers of Jesus....

Actually, the "current" CofC came about back in the early 19th century, when Thomas and Alexander Campbell, and Barton W Stone founded churches in the new world...this was part of the Restoration Movement. I'm pretty sure the Campbells were Presbyterian ministers... not sure about Stone.
They had very similar ideas of how to "improve" the Presbyterian denomination, which came to be known as the "Stone-Campbell Movement" but ended up splitting over (mostly) instrumental music. The Campbells against, Stone ok with it. The Stone branch became the Disciples of Christ, IIRC, and the Campbell branch became the Church of Christ.

The CofC is known for not having any "creed" other than the word of God, and for every congregation being totally autonomous... no central "controlling group". And, for being predominately "acapella" in worship services.... baptism by immersion, partaking in communion every 1st day of the week... probably some other identifying characteristics that I haven't thought of, as well.

Also, CofC's don't really participate in black masses, and eat young children on high holy days.....

Just to set the record straight......:)
I appreciate your post. Check out a book called "Traces of the Kingdom" by Keith Sisman. The auhor was from England and did extensive research. People and congregations were referred to "church of Christ" in Europe (I think mainly England) long before the 19th century and Restoration Movement. They were extensively persecuted by the state religion and Catholicism. The book references many documents and it appeared they believed the 1st century Jesus' teachings.

Isn't the Church of Christ the denomination founded on attempting to be as much like Christ as is given to be possible?

If this is the case, my Mother was brought up in that church, and I do know anyone who is of that church and truly understands our Lord, knows they are not the only ones...that would be the Catholics. Sorry, but some Catholics feel this way , being the only ones that is.

Anywho, I love the founding doctrine of this denomination, but they have failed in their teaching on many levels. Happily the teaching deficit does not effect their salvation as long as they stick with Jesus.

I am just curious.

Is there anyone here that is/are members of the Church of Christ?
I am a member, and I just wondered who else was. Just trying to touch bases and get a feel of this forum is all.

OHHHHHHH!!! And to those who may think that the CoC thinks we are the only ones going to Heaven...well, some may think that way, but I dont. I am not one to judge others for not believing the same way I do. So I really, do not want this thread to turn in to a church bashing thread like I have seen some people do that Catholics. Thank you. Amen.
