Exorcism actually points to a ritual rite ceremony to go against evil influences. Very few of them use the name of Christ.
The rcc has such a ritual rite ceremony much like the movie. Other religions have there ways of dealing with it.

Sounds too much like witchcraft. Would rather pray and trust that God will handle it.

Just an aside -- but while the sword is obviously an offensive weapon, it is also quite defensive, being every bit as useful as a shield to parry blows.

The shield, too, just as much as it is clearly defensive, can be used offensively - 'bashing' the opponent in the face, driving him backwards. Striking with the edge of it. You can kill a person with a shield.

These occur to me, but this third thing i had to be taught, oddly enough -- the shoes, too, can be used for offense. It wasn't until i heard a teacher say this in a sermon - but with hard boots, you can certainly inflict a whole lot of damage on someone by kicking, even to death.

Think about those things spiritually -- not just by the word of God, but also by our faith, and by the gospel of peace with God, our enemy can be destroyed! This certainly applies back to the OP :)
Yo Brother, are you saying we can fight, maim and kill the enemy with our faith!?!?!?

You betta prrreeeeaaacccchhh son! :)

You also mentioned the boots....
The roman soldier boots had 3 to 4 inch spikes on the bottom, Eph 6 says they are the boots are the good news of peace, peace allows you to stand firm in the storm or the battle without being moved.....

Romans 16.20 says

[SUP]20 [/SUP]The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

bam!

Oppression and possession

Here is an article that to my mind differentiates the two

Is it possible for a Christian to be demon-possessed?

The real problem is we are often people whose focus goes elsewhere.
It is always easier to blame someone else or something else rather than an issue
with our approach.

So we have the "flesh", or total inability to walk in righteousness.
Demonic attacks, bad upbringing, a wrong theology etc.

Now my answer is simpler still, the closer you walk with Jesus the more you
show the fruit of the Spirit. So dwelling in Gods word in your heart, seeing
the good and opportunity to help others.

Jesus is always right, so let us go to Him with our issues and see what He
has to say through His word, and to our spirits.

PeterJens, I believe this a disagreement on the defining of terms.

I think the point Lauren is making is the it's ALL oppression and none demon possession(when the person has no control of themselves but only the demon does).

I agree that believers can't be possessed by demons. However it's evident that some believers are oppressed by them.

The question I have is can unbelievers be possessed by demons or (as Lauren says) does that person possess the demon?

I am not sure if the article and Lauren agree on the term "demonized"...she will have to clarify.

All I do know is if you are in the presence of a demon. Stop talking and just pray for God to send His angels to protect you. Ask that His presence fill the space and chase away all evil both seen and unseen. Pray that all who gather together purify their hearts and minds in obedience to God's will. Remind everyone of what Christ has done on the cross and how we are clothed with His righteousness...check their helmet and other armor...then wait for God to move.

God says if two or more are in agreement and pray in His name for something to be done, then He will be amongst us.

We need to stand in that truth and promise and the Enemy will flee.

It is only when the supernatural forces of evil (demons) are dispatched by the supernatural forces of good (God's angels) can we talk to the person and tell them the Gospel.

We can pray and plant the seed and if they accept Christ the Holy Spirit will seal and protect them. We can disciple them and teach them about their armor and God's love and promises. Then pray some more.

Then we would have to talk about how people should deal with demonic oppression, which can take on many forms as highlighted in scriptures....but the key is Jesus Christ and His redeeming work on the cross.

Ariel,

Here is the passage from scripture that sets the scene :-

Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, ‘In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.’ Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?’ Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
Acts 19:13-16

If we have the Holy Spirit within us and KNOW that we are children of the most High God. Then we have spiritual power to pray and have our prayers heard up high.

What parent would not go and help if you heard your child cry out because of bullies? Even the police come when we call for help with robbers.

God is our Heavenly Father and he has always sent help whenever I have called out to Him. I have faith He will continue until the day He decides to call me back home to Him. Angels are the spiritual police...some are fallen corrupt cops seeking to lead people away from God, but 2/3 are loyal to God.

I work from the obvious down.
Demons are not reliable how they behave and can choose to do things.
The only true authority is Gods over them.

Being able to cast out demons does not mean you know the Lord.

I used to think in a strange way the demons where the ones declaring Jesus's
status. But then they would because they know this would get Him into trouble.

What makes Jesus unique is not his status but discovering what he is like and who
he is combined. But this takes time, and is not like a suck up exercise which you
often see when middle management are visited by the CEO of a company.

I got lost at the CEO analogy, but I think we both agree it's not our power that cast out demons but God's?

You know the Pharisees claimed that Jesus cast out demons by Satan's powers and not God's.
