my wife brought up manna when i told here what i'd been thinking about, but is manna commanded to eat? in Exodus 16 the people were commanded to 'gather as much as they need' -- i suppose if you didn't need any, you needn't gather any. but who doesn't have need?
still i thought, maybe this doesn't really qualify.

some of what i have found so far, what we must eat:
  • the lamb slain to save your life ((passover)) / the goat sacrificed to atone for you if being made priest
  • the dust of your destroyed idol ((golden calf)), mixed with water
  • if set apart to prophesy, the scroll ((the word of God?))
this is paralleled in the NT
  • the flesh and the blood of the Lamb of God
i am remembering and holding in mind, He is the bread of life, He is the word of God, He is the Propitiation and the Life :)

also the commands in the law to eat of the tithe, and the unleavened bread -- how do these testify also of Christ? y'all see it? feel free to write
Hi thanks for the reply and a invite to hear my opinion on how I believe, I hear our God regarding the word "manna".

I would begin in verse 2 and highlight things that pertain directly to manna and how it was delivered..

And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger. Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. Exodus 16:2-4

Four forty years the time of testing, manna was the daily bread or like those in some countries today their daily rice.

Exodus 16:31And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

Like all His words that he works to form as we are informed in Jerimiah 1…. he is watching to see if they get performed or you could say; "did mankind hear the thoughts of God correctly", and I think a person could say..... not the thoughts we are familiar with in respect to what we do see walking through the temporal world we live in our seen family.

To test his work of delivering manna described as His doctrine raining down from heaven like dew as the proper order of inspiration not earthly inspired up. (Deuteronomy 4, the water of the word)

The what is it? That defines the word manna which they in verse 6 said "dried up their souls" rather that giving strength showed they were not trusting God as a sign against them .

Exodus 16:15And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, "It is manna:" for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat.

Below the color bdellium as that of a pearly white is used to describe the word of God as the pearl of great price or the pearl gates used to describe the church in Revelation 21. Tasting like honey used to describe the sweet fellowship of the word. With a warning
Not to eat to much or false pride could be vomited . A way to help us try and have a humble attitude .

Exodus 16:31And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.

When they reached the promised land the metaphor manna was exchanged for corn another metaphor to be used beforehand of the suffering of Christ the bread of spirit life in respect to his temporal flesh. The veil is rent.

Moses was to put manna in the golden ark along with the rod of Aaron that budded to symbolize those who rebel and the two duplicate tablets. Hidden form outside. and the book of the law on the outside to define the hidden .again as that unfamialr to us .Like the word manna. What is it who said it as it is written .

In the last book he again uses the pearly color as when a person finds the pearl of great price to represent the word of God, manna, the person went and sold all he was familiar with for a white stone (What is it?) used to represent the whole spiritual house of God as lively stones, the church . The hidden understanding to be searched out of the parables like the manna parable

Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

Numbers 11:7

And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.

as when a person finds the pearl of great price to represent the word of God
hi -- this is just an aside, but i believe the pearl of great price is us.
He buys the whole field, He set aside His glory, making Himself the form of a servant, giving even His life to purchase us.
we don't buy salvation.
He bought us, warts and all.

think about it; it made suddenly to me a lot of sense, and an amazing testimony of Him, if you look at it opposite of what most preaching presents.

Yes he bought the field like Boaz typified as Christ our Kingsman Redeemer sent us workers out in the field with the good news. The fields white with harvest.

Ruth 4:5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

Yes many not mixing faith in what they did eat the food of the will of God as that in which at first the disciples knew not of.

thinking about the weirdly continuing argument about whether it's okay to eat certain foods or not, a question rose up in my mind, that i think is really worth searching out.

what does the scripture actually command to be eaten?

this is not, 'what does the law of Moses say is permissible' -- it's what is required in scripture?

my first thoughts were to spend time researching this exhaustively, then start a thread listing what i find and explaining what understanding i have through them. this was in the middle of the week, and i hadn't had time to sit down and look for hours until now. now, though, i'm thinking, threads in the BDF where someone makes a long speech telling us all 'this is how it is either click like or you are an heretic' are not as useful as threads that involve the reader and ask questions rather than issue proclamations. y'all are smart, you can help me search this out, and we can all bless one another with what we find and what we glean from it. i hope :)

so i'm not going to preach at ya's. i'm going to start listing instances of commands to eat specific things, in hopes you will add to the list, and then we can start putting the list in order and -- my hypothesis -- seeing these things put together will teach us about Christ, because this is what the Bible is all about.

Hey! posthuman... PTL!

Acts 10: 15 "And the voice spake unto him again a second time, what God hath cleansed, that call not thou common."

1 Tim 4: 3-6 "Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained."

Rom 14: 2 "For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs."

So we have a liberty in Christ to eat what we will with prayer, but:
Rom 14: 21 "It is good neither to eat flesh, nor drink wine, nor anything whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak,"

Rom 14: 15 "But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died."

Rom 14: 20 "For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence."

thank you glf1, i do believe as well that the scripture is clear; we can eat anything without sin if we do so with thanks, and we sin with foods and drinks only when we eat them without a clear conscience or by exercising our freedom we offend one another. this seems to me a settled question, so i find it strange that a thread about whether it is okay to eat pork goes on dozens of pages over many days.

thinking about that, i made this thread because another question comes to my mind:

it is easy enough to find commands in Exodus, Deuteronomy and Leviticus saying, do not eat this, do not eat that. it is also found in the same places, it is okay to eat this, it is acceptable to eat that. and it is easy enough to find in the epistles doctrine of freedom in the grace of our Lord whereby diet is not restricted for us. we can go to Genesis and find Adam given every seed-bearing plant as acceptable for food, and Noah given every living creature moving on the earth as good to eat. all these things, they say 'you may eat these' and to those under the law, 'you may not eat those' -- but where does the Bible say, 'you must eat this' ?

see the difference?
i know already of permissive statements, and of restrictive statements. what about explicit statements requiring this or that be consumed?
wha i'm looking for here is, where do we find declarations of '
thou shalt eat' and when we put them together, what do they teach us?

Hey! Post... : )
In the OT, they were required to offer sacrifices for various reasons, like when a child comes of age. The OT sacrifices were to be eaten by the supplicant, by the priest, and the Lord's share along with any uneaten portions were consumed upon the altar's fire; as if sharing a meal with the Lord. These are the only times that I can find where eating was required by the law and these sacrifices came with a specific offering based upon the reason for the sacrifice.
Even communion itself isn't required as scripture tells that to eat and drink unworthily is to bring damnation which makes us weak, sickly, or to sleep in Christ. Contra wise to, thou shalt eat; Jesus told us that we would fast oft, when he was gone.

thanks!

if you read through the first dozen posts or so, i put the places where i could think of, that the Bible records people being commanded to eat something. and Grandpa helped :)

i was reading and found a few places where the priests are told they must eat of the sacrifices, too, like this one:

And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Behold, I also have given thee the charge of mine heave offerings of all the hallowed things of the children of Israel; unto thee have I given them by reason of the anointing, and to thy sons, by an ordinance for ever. This shall be thine of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every oblation of theirs, every meat offering of theirs, and every sin offering of theirs, and every trespass offering of theirs, which they shall render unto me, shall be most holy for thee and for thy sons. In the most holy place shalt thou eat it; every male shall eat it: it shall be holy unto thee.
(Numbers 18:8-10)
this is very interesting to me!
i believe putting them together tells us something. the sinner must eat their burned and ground up idol, mixed with water. those spared by the blood of the lamb must eat the lamb, leaving nothing. the priesthood must eat of the sacrifice - tho some may be left over ((why?)). the prophet must eat the scroll. to have everlasting life we must eat Christ's flesh and drink His blood. the evangelist is told to rise, kill, and eat, every kind of living creature, clean and unclean.

what does this give us a picture of?

isn't it a command, at least to the disciples there with Him, to drink from the cup and eat of the bread? He says, take, eat. take, drink.
in the sense of the pretext of this thread, i think so. but it's interesting that you say, it isn't really said, we must take communion - though He says, "
as often as ye do this" - how often is often? this connects to manna, as it was said, do not gather on this day, but you may gather and cook it on these days - but is it specifically written, you must gather it and eat it? i didn't see. but i may have overlooked.

He took the calf which they had made and burned it with fire, and ground it to powder, and scattered it over the surface of the water and made the sons of Israel drink it.

i don't know why i didn't consider this verse earlier --

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.
(1 Timothy 5:23)
how does this fit?
what is "
wine"? what is "water"?
what is my stomach's sake, and what are my frequent afflictions?
