Demanding that someone prove something does not exist is absurd.

Can you prove that Bigfoot does not exist?

You believe that people are currenting manifesting supernatural gifts akin to those exhibited in the 1st century then where is its prima facie?

Presenting verses that describe these gifts happening 2000 years ago is not proof they are currently happening.

I believe that the law of gravity is currently active. I do not need a physics book for someone to prove it.
If the physical supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit were currently active as during the 1st century I would not need you to point it out from the Bible.

You are simply fighting the obvious and making Christianity look like a confederacy of dunces.
It is utterly ridiculous to demand "proof" that something happening today is identical to something that occurred 2000 years ago. No matter the evidence, you may choose to dismiss it (as many cessationists do). On the contrary, it is reasonable to conclude, based on Scripture, that tongues today are the same thing. You can claim otherwise all you like, but you can't prove your position either.

Good question perhaps to some it sounded like giberish but to others they heard their native tongue
Yes. The gift of interpretation of tongues would be relevant to the gift of tongues, I'd think that'd be obvious if nothing else is. And since some 'heard their native tongue' but others heard 'drunks' and not for example, italian, japanese, or other native tongue current to the relevant population...if it was a known language it would seem to me the comment would be, "these guys are speaking Hebrew, Greek, or Latin or Ethiopian or whatever..." or the crowd was really that ignorant of other known languages?

Whatever the case for tongues today, it absolutely is abused by many of its proponents. This thread reminds me of a Christian friend, an old guy and a unique character, very witty with a lot of very clever one liners and made-up words to replace real ones and make a comment about them. Every time tongues came up in a discussion he'd just launch into "shecomeonahondashecomeonahonda..." until one of us would smack him, but not because we didn't understand his commentary.

considering that there was no interpreter at least it doesn't say there was maybe it really was giberish speaking? you would think the scriptures would say there was an interpreter we assume it was known language but without an interpreter there was it really?

Exactly! The interpretation of that is, "they must be drunk..."

it is certainly abused in the sense of the many fake tongues out there but so is prophecy as well

the people making fun of them saying, "they must be drunk" (sarcastic derision) certainly thought it was gibberish, iyam.

Fwiw2u, when I speak in tongues, it's never with any sort of amplified volume as if I'm attempting to resound in the halls of heaven, or for anyone else to hear for that matter. To me, it is a dignified language and, knowing that God speaks in a still small voice, it carries 'all the way' to His ears on the softest breath.

You have to admit, it did edify him to some extent.
We thought it must have been a relapse into thinking of how he'd met an old girlfriend or something, but it was likely just something that simulated some nonsense he'd heard before that rolled off his tongue easily. Sorry to butt in on an earnest discussion on another never resolved Christian topic.

Don't sweat your butt. Just chalking up all the nonsense as another attempt to discredit the otherwise legitimate power of the Spirit. e.g. He does this by Beelzebub.

My mind doesn't understand it. I only know that my spirit is groaning.
so it could be a foriegn language or it could be what would considered giberish? I only ask because I have heard some speak in languages and others in giberish if there is a case to be made for the giberish part I am wondering if that could be a legit tongues

I continue until I reach HaMakom (The Place), a state of peace, His shalom. (It's never an "all nighter," and I get there rather 'hastily,' for lack of better English. I mean, you'd think that He is immediately available...;)
