The same as the purpose for tongues is today. It edifies the believer (1 Cor 14:4), the person who does it is magnifying God (Acts 2:11; 10:46), and giving thanks well (1 Cor 14:17), and when tongues are spoken and interpreted in the church, the church is edified (1 Cor 14:5).
They spoke the languages they were given to speak. Just like today. There is no guarantee that the language you speak in a tongue will be understood by anyone else present, which is why Paul said tongues, when spoken aloud in the church, must be interpreted.

According to Apostle John's Disciple, Papias, there would be a Tongue that every language could recognize.
so, lets do a Mathematical Problem here and use our minds.

nah, i've provided so much true writings from Tertullian and Church Fathers claiming well into the 5th Century they were still Preaching like Peter, the Spirit fell on people, and evidence of being Saved was Still Speaking in Tongues.
but, we also have a Catholic history + the protestants who tried to Stop Speaking in Tongues.
combine the TWO, IMPOSSIBLE, that 7,000 Languages, have been contacted by way of Speaking in Tongues since the Upper Room less than 2,000 years ago.
