One commentary has this entry:

"election"=Gr."ekloge"="Divine selection" - This is election for church membership, not final salvation. The word "eklektos" is used for the "inner circle" as in Mt 22:14 ("chosen") where the verse may be likened to an audition - Many called, few chosen."

Tit 1:1
Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, G1588 and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

G1588 - eklektos - Strong's Greek Lexicon (kjv) (blueletterbible.org)

1Th 1:4
Knowing, brethren beloved, your election G1589 of God.

G1589 - eklogē - Strong's Greek Lexicon (kjv) (blueletterbible.org)

Anybody have further insights?

What does he mean by "church membership"? Election is in fact for "final salvation" -- perfection and glorification.

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. (Rom 8:29,30)

Paul writes in the past tense even though glorification is in the future. It simply shows that in God's eyes it is already an accomplished fact. Sinners are justified by grace through faith, sanctified by the indwelling Holy Spirit, and perfected, transformed, and glorified by Christ at the Resurrection/Rapture. That is when all the saints are fully "conformed to the image of His Son" (1 John 3:1-3).

Right. Still going thru the commentary.

Interesting Greek term here:

1Th 2:4
But as we were allowed G1381 of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth G1381 our hearts.

Rom 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove G1381 what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

G1381 - dokimazō - Strong's Greek Lexicon (kjv) (blueletterbible.org)

The KJV translates Strong's G1381 in the following manner:
prove (10x), try (4x), approve (3x), discern (2x), allow (2x), like (1x), examine (1x).
Outline of Biblical Usage
  1. to test, examine, prove, scrutinise (to see whether a thing is genuine or not), as metals
  2. to recognise as genuine after examination, to approve, deem worthy

One quick observation: the Greek prefix ek means "out" as used in ekklesia (called-out ones). It appears in the modern English words such as eccentric (outside the centre) and eclectic (outside the selection) which itself comes directly from the Greek word translated here as elect.

Church membership is by the New Birth, not joining the roll a local church, how can I join that to which I am already a member of Chris through Christ’s blood.
