I did some closer study on this and I saw a progression. Idolatry begins outside the temple, as a side issue. Then it moves into the secret rooms, as we begin to secretly cherish this "idol". Next we begin to rely upon it, as the women crying to Tammus--a ritual that was to bring the end of winter and the beginning of fertility. Finally, we are bowing with our back to the presence of God.
All sin is progressive. Look at David's fall. It all started with an admiring glance and proceeded to murder.
