2 Thessalonians 2:13

"But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth".

I don't understand what "firstfruits" means. I've searched and can't find a good answer. My bible has a note that says some manuscripts say "chose you from the beginning" instead of chose you as the firstfruits.

But I'd still like to know what firstfruits means. Does anyone know?

Thanks.

:)

In the bible that I use, you can read ..."from the begining..." instead of the word ´firstfruits´ :)

It means that they were the first to be saved through their teaching of the Gospel.
The KJV reads:

2Th 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

I have been told to think of it like a garden, you give your first(best-juicest-biggest) fruits to God, so He can plant them again. This will ensure that you will never be without and that you are a good gardner by trusting the one that has the Almanac. I know, it sounds silly but think about it. lol

I think it means that the Christians who converted right after Jesuses death were the first to receive salvation.

I'm not joking because the first fruit was the apple or the fig in the garden of eden.

Firstfruits is a Jewish holiday and it's pretty cool all the Jewish holidays point directly to Jesus.

Passover (Pesach) - Points to the death of Jesus for our sins.
Firstfruits - Points to His resurrection.
Pentecost (Shavuot) - Points to the out-pouring of The Holy Spirit.
Trumpets - Points to His return.
Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) - Points to national salvation for Israel.
Tabernacles (Sukkot) - Points to the in gathering of the nations, the great and final harvest

Yes the word "first-fruits" has many meanings, but I don't think any of that is what is meant in the passage.

I HAVE AN OLD TEEN BIBLE THAT WAS ALMOST ALWAYS IN MY BACK PACK IN HIGH SCHOOL. IT SPEAKS IN PLAIN EVERYDAY LANGUAGE.THE SAME VERSE IN MY BIBLE SAYS:
"BROTHERS AND SISTERS,WHOM THE LORD LOVES,GOD CHOSE YOU FORM THE BEGINNING TO BE SAVED.SO WE MUST ALWAYS THANK GOD FOR YOU.YOU ARE SAVED BY THE SPIRIT THAT MAKES YOU HOLY AND BY YOUR FAITH IN THE TRUTH."
I HOPE THIS MORE MODERN TRANSLATION HELPS.

First fruits are those who are first brought into the kingdom of heaven. We are the first to believe in Christ as our Savior, and we will be the first to enter into the heavenly Jerusalem. We have been brought into His grace, as a body, before all others. We are members of the body which begin that day when Jesus raised from the dead, the flock that He laid down His life for. This body is one in Him, and includes everyone who has and who does and who will believe in Him for salvation by grace with God.

Jesus said that in His house there are many mansions, and He goes to prepare a place for us. If it was not true, He would not have said so.

If we are the first to be brought into the kingdom of heaven, who is the second, and third, and last?

If you think about it, it will be obvious that many will have the opportunity to receive Him during the reign of Christ in this world. This is one of those things on which the scripture is not very forthcoming. It is written that the saints of old would not enter the kingdom before we do.

While those who have passed from this life are with the Lord in spirit, the resurrection has not come yet. Paul wrote that the entire creation groans and travails together waiting the revealing of the children of God. This is the resurrection. Those of us who are alive when He appears again will be caught up into the air with those who have gone before, the saints of old, and those who are His who have gone from this world. We are the first fruits.

This does not say anything about the nation of Israel, who will be saved. This says nothing about those who will come to know Him during the 1000 year reign. And who's to say that there are not people in the new earth, when the old earth is done away with? Just because they are brought into existence without a sinful creation or a sin nature, who's to say that they also need to receive Christ as Lord.

Does the first have a boast over those who come later? Not in any way.

In His peace,
